- Cry of Fear is what every Sweden citizen goes through every night. It's a psychological survival horror game developed by Team Psykskallar. It follows the story of Simon Hendriksson and his messed up mind.
Music in the video is taken from the game's OST.

As a Swede, I can confirm that this mod is a perfect representation of a late, gloomy evening in Stockholm in the early 2010s.
Give or take floating bed people?
@@alexwhite6554
I see them in my local supermarket
Thank goodness I've never been to Stockholm!
Well, at least we know not to visit Stockholm in the early 2010s. Good info to make note of when charting our road trip across space and time in the ol’ DeLorean, eh? 😏
@@Jolis_Parsec don't drink the water
My friend is Swedish and says this game is very accurate, so much that he got PTSD enduced hallucinations after playing
Yeah as a swede, we have to battle bosses on our way to work
Tell ur friend to stop w the nonsense lmaoooooo bros a goofball
@lightwrk
Its not that easy man, some people are susceptible to this shit.
Doesn't make them a goofball, means they're in pain.
I own the hoodie Simon wears, I once forgot it at a train station. I travelled at 3 am back just to get it back (managed to find it). This game means a lot to me and I wish many more people would give it a chance. Its my comfort space and always will be.
of course you had to back track to get your cry of fear hoodie
The fact that you had to put a disclaimer at the beginning and taking into consideration that most of the dev team was in their teens and early 20s at the time they were making this game, it really shows how some young people can be talented. A masterpiece
"Basically she doesn't kill you, instead she coerces you into commiting suicide... HOLY SHIT" it shouldn't be a funny line, but you made it a funny line
New world record on RadHaz not saying Dark n Gritty is: 3:53! Conglaturations!
Also, really am glad you made a video on Cry of Fear, you're the perfect (imo) person to talk about this kind of game/mod/whatever at this point. Mostly with your presentation, it, makes it more lively.
Ayyy new WR babbyyy. Also thanks! :D
Somehow when I started playing this game around the age of 14 I wound up sinking 40 hours into it, still to this day one of the best experiences playing a horror game Ive ever had
The game is actually based on irl locations in sweden - apartment buildings, parks, train station, school, psychiatric hoapital, the lake, the neighbourhood at the end.
I live close to Sweden and been there once and I can admit as soon as I arrived I lost consciousness and woke up in a dark alley with only my phone and a pocket knife
Loved the Morshu reference 😂😂 it's good to have a funny sense of humour every now and then. Keep it up dude
Cry of Fear is exceptional. I loved Afraid of Monsters aswell, but the team made the two best horror conversions for HL and one of the best horror games in general. Sad the source versions were scrapped but im glad we have the originals.
similar boat to They Hunger
As a swedish man This game is just another tuesday in stockholm.
Always happy to be fed more Cry of Fear content.
always loved the design of this game in terms of art style and level design. Its a walkable time capsule of stockholm circa 2011-12.
My favorite survival horror game of all time. Everything about it is inspired and inspiring, particularly the level design. And that soundtrack, hooBOY.
43:09 More than likely, what they did was they did the same thing that Valve did for the "cinematic physics" they added to Episode 2. Basically you just make a model, break it up into little gibs but leave it together, then run a physics simulation on it in your modelling program of choice, then you export that simulation as an animation along with two idle animations. So you then end up with a model with three animations, one idle animation of the model unbroken, one animation of it breaking, and one idle animation of the model after it's broken and the pieces have settled. You then compile it and just set it up in Hammer to trigger when you want it to and boom, it looks like you now have complicated physics interactions when in reality it's just a fancy animated model.
This mod is one of my favourite Half-Life 1 mods. It was pretty innovative for it’s time. I also watched a guy stream the game during October, unfortunately he got softlocked during Chapter 4 because of the backtracking and wasn’t able to progress. 😅
I love how people are still recognizing this game, Absolute masterpiece
There are some game worlds that are made to be just that, "video game levels", and you can see it in design, even when devs try to mask it.
And then, there are games with worlds that, if not directly copied from real places, at least seem realistic enough that you may think they were copied from real locations. Outdoor areas of Cry of Fear are just that. It may as well have been a walking simulator, but with that atmosphere and design it would still be one of the best-of-the-best HL mods ever.
19:45 - This may look like a plothole unless you googled it. Depression helplines are free to dial. The same and for 911 call.
I have quite mixed relationship with Cry of Fear, revisited it just very recently after long time ("since PewDiePie covered it" type of long time). On one side I love this game and how it plays out. It doesn't rely too much on jumpscares (I'm looking at you Five Nights at Freddy's!), you are on the edge of your seat every second, and design of monsters is pretty creative. On the other hand, I hate how accurate the depression and anxiety are described, since I am diagnosed with it. Almost everything feels very familiar with Simon's mental state. Being lonely, depressed and anxious can and will indeed destroy you inside out, and you cannot do anything about it. You are not safe from it even during the day either. The only thing that prevents me from committing unalive is the thought that evil people who brought me to this mental state would win if I did it.
except if I remember correct 911 does not connect anywhere (this is swden) but if you can the swedish version of it.. it connects... and you figure out 911 is useless...
@@Zack_Wester European emergency line is 112, but in game it works the same as 911 - it just blasts your ears with sounds of a guy getting chopped down by chainsaw.
@@RebelWvlf wait that game supported that.
I knew that you would connect if you dialed 112 and got the chainsaw person.
I was unser if dialing 911 would also connect you to that scene.
@@Zack_Wester kinda late reply, but both 911 and 112 do work in game. But once you dialed one of these emergency lines, you cannot dial it again until the end of the run.
You can do something about it. I had depression before and what got me out of it was exercise and flexibility. If you’re bored nothing is stopping you from stretching on the floor or doing sit-ups etc.
As a Finn, I gotta say this almost happened to me when I visited Stockholm in 2019. It's almost as bad as our city called Kouvola.
Lahti:
7:46 These enemies are actually supposed to be deceased children stuffed in trashbags, all they are wearing is a trashbag and tape
Nice belated Halloween episode RadHaz. My first introduction to this game was back in 2012 when Matt and Pat played it for the first shitstorn of scariness.
Also as a Dane I can confirm that this is a 100% accurate depiction of Sweden.
3:49 He said it, He said the word!
17:15 - I was waiting when you gonna say that, I am not disappointed!
I grew up in this area in Stockholm, or at least parts of what inspired the games surroundings- its really cool how they used real life locations, that have now changed a lot 15+ years later.
cry of fear is quite a dark and gritty mod, now that you mention it.
It was all in "Le Head"
When the Quiet Kid becomes a Video Game Protagonist…
43:12 In the commentary If i remember correctly, they had to use a program to make this work. Was it an animation only that I don't remember.
Fun fact the voice actor for Simon is the same voice actor for Virgil from portal stories Mel
About a week ago, a great mod was released on Moddb. It's called The Last Bullet: Updated. This is not just a half-life mod, this is a standelone game on xash3D
I'm surprised he missed the taclight for the pistol. The taclight makes the middle half so much better.
Good to see more RUclipsrs talking about this gem!
Finally an upload!
43:11
I assume that was done by just porting in the animation from a 3D modeling program. It has the same neat physics as the brick wall.
20:23 You can kill him, but slowly because he has 2k Health.
Finally, a Cry Of Fear vid from the best Half-Life RUclipsr. I wonder if Cry of Fear has some cut, beta content that never made it into the game. As always, thank you for another great video, it made my day better.
Also, 24:52 i'd do the same thing lol
Ayy thanks! It does have beta content but Im not sure if I'll cover it.
If you call 999 or most other emergency service lines on the phone you get an interesting outcome
most useful emergency service in sweden
Ah yes, Cry of fear. The game where I hold the only E rank ever recorded, so far. Mainly because it wasn't even thought possible originally.
This is the best review about this game i've been absolutely loving for years.
Thanks for making this video and leading the game to a better spot.
Finally, an actual experienced half life fan taking a look at this masterpiece of a game. I mean pyro is alright but (insert fat fetish joke here)
I can’t ever see him the same after that esex with an underage boy

Stockholm meets Detroit with a little dash of Brazil.
goldsrc? damn dat pixel shaded water tho. that talent from the dev.
2:58 My face when Rad Haz uploads.
I love cry of fear, I was Simon one year for Halloween
And he may have inspired the main antagonist of one of my game ideas
Ambatukam on thumbnail got me for watching this video 😂
Bro dropped the hardest Sweden video and thought we wouldn't notice 💯
“What a MAD man LMAO!”
nah simon says "damn. no signal." not anything about credit. in the tunnels he likely couldnt get a signal to call polsi and you can call the police later on, not sure why you cant call your mother but i guess they never thought they could have it fit in the game, coulda been an easter egg though
I will forever say this gamers should never feel ashamed of how they play their games let alone difficulty wise I myself usually start with easy most of the time. I am 30 soon to be 31 Jan 22 2024 and I can still game just fine but my health is terrible I am a literal walking medical bill and have been for almost a decade now lol. I am glad I found your channel its been really great content and relaxing so thank you very much.
The funny sauce engine sycologic horror game
UM ACKSHUALLY ITS RUNNING ON THE GOLD SOURCE ENGINE 🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓

Great video rad gonna have to try this game out again
Funny how this video comes out right after I complete my play through.
Right on cue to entertain my dinner time
Wearing Simon's hoodie while watching this, feelsgoodman
9:16 the key will be in the room from the start, it’s just hard to see with the lights on. It’s easiest to see if you turn on nightvision as the doctor.
23:45
…and you would jump off the building? OH! You mean that. Yeah, that makes more sense.
FINALLY CRY OF FEAR!!!
"Hammer Hammerson" reminds me of the skit by Alasdair Beckett King. The Gunnar Gunnarssonson bit.
The Hammersson line in this video was inspired by that Gunnarsson skit lol.
I remember trying to play this way back in the day, but I just couldn't take it seriously. this game's protagonist, a disturbed, brooding character who fights monsters with guns and melee weapons… looks like a 10 year old kid. once I saw that face, I uninstalled the game.
Sadly we probably wont get a remake/remaster i believe theres has been atleast two attempts first a source 2013 version wich there are some videos about, then maybe a Unreal engine version that i m less sure about
11:50 We can't escape *Him* can We?
Ah yes Cry Of Fear... this game is a game that terrified me and still does xD
38:54 I mean in Real Life this trick is usefull since it is bad dying in a maze because You run out of water and food but in mazes in video games I want to have it hard to solve because it is a maze and mazes are fun but with thid trick all mazes get solved the same way which is sad
Slay Queen, literally 💅🏽
good one radhaz, you could do a nightmare house 1 and 2 retrospective in this style some time soon.... that'd be nice. hopefully not for halloween next year, too much of a wait. hope you're well.
Thanks! I was actually gonna upload a NH2 video before this but Lucia did it before me. I'll be working on it soon and upload in a few days.
as soon as i took a picture of that hanging body i instantly quit the game
I’m freaking out
A classic indeed. However, I must admit I never actually finished it myself, mainly because early on it really suffers from the "modern survivor horror" syndrome, as I call it. Basically, an over-reliance on sensory deprivation and jumpscares, neither of which are scary or indicative of a quality horror experience. I found it more irritating than scary, so I just dropped it completely and watched a walkthrough instead. A shame, I agree, as later on it becomes a lot more creative, especially in terms of locations, but the first half was annoying enough for me.
It had plenty of content honestly, the developers really worked hard on this title, the story was epic and well executed, the co-op campaign looked insane too. Perhaps you can cover it someday, if anything it seemed even more fun than the main campaign. Just a bit of a shame the optimization and stability leave to be desired these days, they pushed the engine to its limits and kinda just left it there, similar to Black Mesa when they added all the new features and enhancements for Xen - for a game that never ran fantastic anyway. It was even worse back when the mod version dropped in 2012 that ran on Source 2007, that version suffered from major frame drops at times.
I would also suggest covering Nightmare House 2, which is kinda the equivalent of CoF for Source, but more visibly inspired by Fear and Silent Hill 3 in particular, and doesn't have the annoyances of CoF's first half at all. The voice acting is top notch as well, in fact almost too good for a mod.
Damn, that's a lot of work put into a free mod
the frustration of the difficult game is part of the experience
The Arthur Fleck before Arthur Fleck
Have to agree with the statement that there's no shame in playing a game on easier difficulties. Not everyone is able to enjoy tough games when it's just a constant setback because the game is a little bit unnecessarily harder than it should be.
Ah yes - Cry of fear aka average swedish teenager simulator
Laugh of Happiness
"ugh agh french"
For the first time Rad got me genuinely crying at the end, you absolute madman. I'm lucky to still being able to walk but god damn Simon be just like me fr.
I can’t believe Sweden was all in le head
I'd like to recommend a fairly old Half-Life 2 mod called Korsakovia. It's a psychological horror game with some interesting puzzles, a fairly cool storyline, and some very questionable design decisions that might be worth analyzing.
As a Finnish person, i can say Cry of Fear is the average experience in Lahti.
Yeah the game becomes fun after the subway station to be honest
Oh yeah also the other endings, either straight up leave the carcass boss which just changes the dialogue, or don’t trust the doctor which will be the same, or do both the dialogue gets violent, either way it’s the bad end.
Stockholm 2011 Simulator in GoldSrc Engine
I don't think the serial killer in the apartments represent anything about Simon I think it's just supposed to be some insane person who is creating the bin bag children that are encounterd in the game
The wiki says that the serial killer could be also a person Simon saw in real life
Didn't know they made a game about a regular day in sweden
I played Cry of Fear in 2019 and it was my favorite game of the year.
As you promised! A Cry of Fear retrospect
