I love how the game is very dark, edgy and genuinely pretty sad at times, but it's fandom is usually making things like "teehee Simon and David speedrun the game and have fun looking at memes"
As someone with past suicidal ideation, the scene at the end where corridors are turning and twisting as you approach that 'Inner Simon' was very powerful.
Yesterday I tried to end it all, I regret it completely. Cry Of Fear has helped me to go through all of this, it makes me feel better and I can relate to Simon

Cry of Fear has guided me through very tough times, and still does. To feel like you're in the same predicament as Simon, with his deep thoughts and contemplations, is to feel mutual empathy and agreement with a fictional character, which is something I've never had another game do. At the moment, I have invested 90 hours into this game, and I still have not unlocked His book or the Famas. (spoilers ahead?) The music for the whole game, whether the tracks be ambience or genuine compositions, are perfect. Some composed tracks capture a feeling of hopelessness and entrapment. Others, while still sounding grim, feel like they are to give some form of hope to continue. A good example of this is the piece "Chainsaw Reaction", by Muddasheep, who I've actually come to listen to after hearing of his work in Cry of Fear (my favourite song of his is "Payment" and you should listen to it). The ambient, or background tracks, are of the same quality as the composed musical tracks. While not actually a nice track to listen to, the track "Kill Yourself" is always something that greatly disturbs me when it is featured in the last strut of the game. It is claustrophobic and makes you feel cornered and trapped. It has clips of Stig, the talented voice actor of Simon, repeatedly screaming "I'm sick", "I'm so sick of you", and "Kill yourself". The whole track has rapid breathing and screaming, along with aching, resonationating noises. In the audio of the area, Simon's voice, he is literally telling Simon to kill himself, stating that he can't be fixed or cured of his sickness. This is somewhat true depending on what ending you have paved your way towards. There is such great symbolism in this game that really only shines after you finish the game for the first time and take a step back to take it all in. Killing carcass or running away isn't just a decision to fight a boss or not to, it's a choice for Simon to accept Sophie's rejection and move on from it or to relive and wallow in this memory, keeping Sophie's feelings to himself and holding a painful grudge against her for it. Giving Purnell the gun or not represents Simon putting his trust in him or not, and that's beautiful. There's lots more I could say, but this is a comment on a video essay that is about what the video is about, y'know? Good game.
I like how immediately after the maze nightmare and we're given the reveal, Simon temporarily loses the use of his legs and has to crawl towards the door to save himself. Nice bit of subtle detail there.
The fact he has no longer human in the background gives this an underlying sense of irony, while not on purpose it makes this just perfect. 25:44 LMAOOO DAZAI JUMPING MENTIONED xddddd
Ever since I was a child, I always had a fascination with this game, I remember watching videos not too long after it came out and, even though the game was terrifying, it was quite comforting. I guess I started to take comfort in the fact that nothing is perfect, both in this game and real life. Now i've been craving for more content of this game and I don't think I'll ever get enough.
I knew it was Cry of Fear before clicking on the video. This was one of the first games that got me into the horror genre, and to this day it’s still haunting. An absolute classic!
@@ales6305 Surprisingly I didn’t pay attention to the right side of the thumbnail, I just saw “MENTAL ILLNESS” then read the title and it instantly clicked 😂
this video is so wild to me as a long time COF fan. I remember a significant portion of the fandom back in the day did not like Andreas for a multitude of reasons, and would do things just to spite him. On top of that there was a general conclusion that COF was not good representation of mental health, and I know a few people who had to put the game down and step away because it consumed their life and left them bitter and spiteful. I love the game, it just needs to be handled carefully
Man, this game's soundtrack is BEAUTIFUL. I used to listen to Brandon, Lonely, or Chainsaw Reaction when I was out on a walk at night, or at work after hours. The creator of the game, Andreas, has a band called Intig, and much of their music is very similar to the game's soundtrack
hearing don't you dare forget the sun with the ticci toby video actually gave me flashbacks to being like 10 years old and seeing that video for the first time. i genuinely didn't think i would hear anyone talk about it 😭😭😭
The gameplay is horrifying and janky but the message and story of the game is amazing. I only know of cry of fear because of johnny toast from Venturiantale.
DUUUDE. you JUST made me realize that johnny toast is simon. absolutely wild revelation that something so ingrained in my childhood is a reference to something i'd come to like in my late teens
TW: Suicide (Then again, you will be exposed to it if you play this game anyway.) If they were going to implement murder-suicide endings, one thing I would add personally is an ending where only Simon dies. It would happen if Simon gets killed by his book self, and he'd write that he came close to keeping his grip, but just couldn't overcome the pain in the end. He'd thank Sophie and Purnell for doing their best to save him, especially the doctor for the book idea that gave him some comfort before death, but felt like too much of a burden on them. Not that you are a burden on your loved ones, I'm just saying it's something some depressed people feel, and you are not alone in feeling that way. So he loads the gun, contemplates how maybe he'd find some happiness if he could still stand on his own feet, and hopes for Sophie to be happy... and tells her goodbye. And the monologue could be a little different depending on if he shot any bullets. Maybe he'd express his guilt for accidentally killing one or both of the police officers in the process of writing. But despite what my idea may imply about me, I truly hope no one has to go through that sort of thing. I hope you're okay out there. Whoever you are, I hope you can live a happy and healthy life without causing anyone else pain. Stay safe out there...
Never actually knew the entire CoF story until now. So good, so so so good. Its very touching to say the least. Seeing what Simon perceives through his struggles is very frightening. Great video!
I loved the way you analysed the game, great job! This game is one of my all time favourites and you did it great justice Again, great video i enjoyed it 🫂
I played this game last month and was such a beautiful game. There was a few funny things because of the game mechanics, like the way the car just straight hits Simon or like at some point the gun didn't had gunshots sound anymore. The only reason why I gave the gun to the doctor was because there was no bullets in it but got shot anyway.
this is one of my favorite games of all time. most of the video essays are very surface level, but this one and the video by Leon Talks a Lot scratch the cry of fear itch without actually playing the game.
The scariest thing about the game is Simon's real life car accident nd paralysis. I'd personally prefer death to a meaningless existence as a paralyzed person, unable to live my live at it's fullest. So, for me, in his case, the best ending for me is killing the carcas but NOT trusting the doctor. (because poor Sophie is not obligated to share his feelings but keeping the poor paralyzed guy alive would be a bad ending)
This is what made me love cry of fear and the silent hill games especially silent hill 3, being a woman. Just relating to the character and entire game in a way. In my darkest times it made me feel less alone and I hope there will be more games like these. Great video btw :)

Not that it matters but I just feel like pointing out that those "hand-animated" physics you mentioned most likely aren't hand-animated, but rather simulated as physics objects in another software, baked as animations and then imported into the game. So in a way they are animated yes, but not by hand
Personally, I think it's a damaging portrayal of mental illness. I'm glad it's helped some people and stuff, but like the message about the character, regardless of ending is that he's dangerous and going to hurt people because he's mentally ill and he should have been locked up ahead of time. It's also reinforced in the way that it seems to say that treatment isn't going to work outside of being locked up for life, that the meds and the therapy won't work and that outpatients don't get any say in their treatment and that the doctor either doesn't care or is inept. For that last part, many therapists and other clinicians don't care or are inept, but not to that level and if they have sufficient reason to believe you're a danger to self or others they are required by law to have you admitted beforehand. It should also be noted that if you think someone on your care team is inept or doesn't care, you can always ask for a transfer either in-house or to an independent practice (in-house just makes things easier, but private practice therapists tend to be better; the downside to the latter option is that if you're working with an organization, you may lose your psychiatrist too, b/c of ethical concerns or difficulties with inter party communications and records keeping). But yeah, overall, I actually feel like this is a damaging depiction of mental healthcare and mental illness. Obviously, there are cases where mentally ill people are a danger to others, I did admit as much, but it's the exception. Most of the time, mentally ill people are more likely to be victims of violence either past or ongoing. Idk, I'm also just not a fan of the character of Simon. Overall, he seems like kind of an entitled pos who uses his mental illness as justification for his violent actions and clearly is just a hateful, spiteful person except when he's in the "good ending" where all his needs are met for him and he doesn't have to take care of himself and he can keep this person in his life through mutual guilt. Like, bro was really ready to murder his only friend and kill himself b/c she said no and he felt entitled to her body. And you can't even put that on his psychosis, b/c in the endings where he kills the doctor and/or Sophie, he's completely cognisant of the action and his reasoning is literally his entitlement to her and that the doctor's treatment isn't working (which again is something that he also has a level of control over, he can find a better doctor). That's my perspective anyways as a "crazy" person. I can think of a good number of games with better mental health portrayals.
@@xaviermoriarty7429 Yeah, as a person with anxiety and depression, this game gives me anxiety and i was hoping for at least one actually good ending. There's a big difference between hallucinating flesh walls and having no energy to do daily tasks... But maybe it's just my health anxiety speaking because I'm always afraid I'll end up 'crazy'

HAD TO REFERENCE IT SOMEHOW 😎
Thank youuu :)
Tru tru...and I can medically relate to the illness the Cry of Fear depicts😂😭🤣💀😔🔫
Not that it matters but I just feel like pointing out that those "hand-animated" physics you mentioned most likely aren't hand-animated, but rather simulated as physics objects in another software, baked as animations and then imported into the game. So in a way they are animated yes, but not by hand
That could also be the case
AAAA I LOVE YOUR SIMON COSPLAY DUDE LMAO

I might! I just need to play through it first :P but I've heard very good things about it
This game is still so uncanny. The movements of the enemies just isn’t right lol
It perfectly explains it to a sane person I wonder what a crazy person would think 😂
This video was great :D Would love to see you cover other games like Alisa or Haunting ground
Thank youu it means a lot! Duly noted I'll check them out :)
