Think tire chains are a better idea thank lockers? Check out this video we made comparing them on the same trail ruclips.net/video/VOrt9lMr5DQ/видео.htmlsi=-gj23PK801ghjI3H
People underestimate the benefits of locking the dif. It's more than hanging a tire. There's the advantage of all tires moving the same speed so you can tiptoe the edge of traction. I actually have had people that base their opinions on absolutely nothing try to tell me that lockers can't help your braking traction.
I live in the Midwest and we also deal with mud, snow, ice and hills. I also drive a ZJ but mine is a 96 with the 4.0L 6. I like having the rear locked but don't like the front locked. I prefer to have the stearability in nasty stuff especially on hillsides in the slick. Nothing worse than being on a side slant and both steer wheels break loose and the front end dives downhill. I have my rear locked and the front open. I tend to run pretty aggressive mud and snow tires and do have a set of chains for my 31's that I only use when absolutely necessary and if I am by myself. We try to run the buddy system for safety but all my relatives have 4x4's
@@desertdan100 I have a Detroit in the rear and a lockrite in the front so I know what you mean. Ideally I'd change the front to an ARB but until then I just leave the driver's side hub unlocked if there's any chance of the front diving.
One of the first mods I did was lockers and a regear. Interestingly, I went with lockers on an economic basis of being able to drive slower to avoid breaking things. Momentum for everything = broken parts in the middle of no where. I only use my lockers when I need them to avoid driveline and tire wear.
I have a rear locker on my 2500HD snow plowing truck. That works most of the time and still allows good steering. When it is icy, I add crossbar chains and then can go just about anywhere. A front locker would add more traction, but makes it somewhat harder to maneuver the plow in tight places.
Short answer, lockers help you to slowly get over obstacles where open diffs require momentum. More speed equals more chances of breaking things. Beautiful country up there.
@@countryslickerofficial I have the e lockers in my JK Rubicon and they are so nice to have. The ZJ doesn't have many options for the rear, but I have a lunchbox locker and it does great!

Here in Arizona Lockers are King. Top 3 modifications to go far in the desert are #1 Tires, #2 long travel suspension, and #3 lockers. Just those 3 and you can go anywhere down here. Traction and articulation.
I'm in NE Washington about 30 minutes south of Canada and this year has been an absolutely amazing winter for snow wheeling! My tipple locked vehicle on 37s barely knows the snow or any obstacle is there. It may be time to get smaller tires haha
Yes and no depending on how much off roading you do. I have the BLD system on my wrangler with no locker and i find it can do 90% of what i ask for. Similar systems are on other brands like the a-trac that can be enough for some people. But for sure if you are doing any serious offroading having lockers is very nice.
JKUR. Justified the cost to the wife by explaining the benefits of lockers if I get in to an issue camping with the kids. Though I don’t wheel much beyond the easy capacity of my Jeep, I have gotten in to issues with ice on trails where without lockers, we’d of been stuck. She is glad it was money well spent. It’s that whole better to have it and not needed than need it and not have it thing.
Shout out from NorCal here. Haven’t had much snow the last few years but we finally got some and it’s been great to be back wheeling in it. So far this has been my fav video and lockers are a must in my book.
Just got myself an 89 xj dana 44 up front 8.8 rear twin Detroit locked coil overs 10 inch lift 35 inch tires and I’m super happy with it can’t wait to go snow wheeling would love to bring it up to bc to play one day !! Lockers are a gift and a curse in snow can make sliding off the trail a lot easier but can get you through alot more I’m gonna go with air lockers when I upgrade so I can have the best of both worlds ! Cheers from New Brunswick a little too for snow wheeling giving it less gas can help so you stay on top instead spinning down deep into the snow !
Cool....used to liv in BC, now SW Saskatchewan.....I have had a 93 Zed Jay for about ten years...4.0 which runs like new.....replaced the tranny, grenaded and replaced the transfer case, rebuilt the rear end.....other than general maintenance over the years this beast just keeps running and running...over 430000 km on it.....and although in the process of putting on a bumper skin and some bits from my parts Jeep after a pronghorn lost a head butting contest at 110 kph....it is the old style full 4WD transfer case, not the AWD setup. I've grown to love this thing as much as I did my YJ.
After some bad experiences early on, I've always had front and rear lockers on my trail vehicles. Nice and slow has always been my preferred method, but using more skinny pedal is there when you need it.
Question from a newb. Would front and back TrueTrac LSD do “almost” as good as a locker on this trail? I know LSD > Open Diffs, but I’m just curious how much MORE of an advantage lockers would be over a TrueTrac. Thanks!
Yup, there are times when an open diff is definitely better, and times when a locked is really the only good option. I've settled on OX lockers after having used different ones over the years. While you can set them up to activate by air or electronically, I really liked the all mechanical/cable option, plus the "plug" you can put in the diff where your shift mechanism enters the cover that keeps it locked if your air/electric/cable system fails, so you can still get back to pavement.
what vehicle did u install the ox cable locker on ? did you put them in front and rear ? I am leaning towards the ox lockers front and rear on tj and xj because they are so simple. I like the fact that you do not need to pull your carrier and gears to fix an air leak (if one occurs), and like the idea of the "drive-a-way plug" as a backup since i solo wheel with my family. i'm not sure if i want to use cables or air actuators for my xj crawler.?.. but i am thinking i might need to go with air actuators for my tj, cause of the tight packaging and possibly too many sharp bends.?..
buddy of mine did an Aux locker in his TJ and could't believe the difference it made in the winter time ice fishing or out on the trail and just having an LSD up front, 3" lift on on 33" A/T's and a nice warn witch mounted up front that i never saw used in 10 yrs, funny people use to think he had an extra transfer case looking at the extra lever for the Aux,👍 I am still amazed at where we could go in that thing to this day

From Oregon. Don't have a ZJ yet but thinking of getting one with either a 4.7 or 5.9 V8 motor. Just became a subscriber today. Good Video. Had a Jeep Cherokee XJ and loved her. Currently building a LJ right now and wife as a 4 door JKU.
This reminds me of one A hole in a built XJ who felt obligated to help a forest ranger who was pulling a kid and his 2wd drive ram out of snowy trench. Just tried to spark up conversation by asking if he had lockers. In his complete arrogant tone of voice he looked at me as if it was dumbest person and said you shouldn’t use lockers in the snow 😑. I get it lockers can bind up on turns and not every situation on ice/ snow requires lockers. However this just shows lockers make a positive difference in snow also and that guy wasn’t just an A hole but an ignorant one at that. Thanks for the video.
Hey, watching from Kelowna BC. Building up my YJ and plan on doing lockers this spring. Loved this video! Definitely feel locked is the way to go! Have fun Wheeling

Hearty greetings from the beautiful high deserts and forests of Idaho. I Really like your Country Slicker logo and the drone trick. I don't have a drone and have always wondered how much of a payload they can carry. I noticed the downwash is inflating the bag and pushing down against the drone's efforts to rise. If you collapsed the shopping bag around the cell phone and tied a half-hitch knot in the handles then the bag can't inflate and it would carry the payload much better and easier. "If mama ain't happy, nobody's happy." Always check-in at the home front LOL... 🙂
I went for detroit soft lockers front and back on my TJ. Wish I had gone for an air locker in the front because when I get stuck now I've got no extra buttons 😒 it's winch time 😁 🔱🇬🇧 Awesome video though

@@99jeepxjguy97 Never owner one, but have talked to lots of folks with them. How you drive makes a big difference in noise. Coasting around corners helps but parking lots are notoriously noisy. There's a reason lock-right has developed a "quieter" version.
@@stuwy1237 Yes, definitely keep the power down around corners. And yes, parking lots and gas stations. Seems everyone turns to look what the noise is. Ha ha. And then they see the old Jeep. And my kid borrowed it a couple weeks ago. He knew the spartan was in there. He got sideways on an icy road, and after multiple attempts at corrections, landed in the ditch. The transition from spooled to released and back again made corrections difficult. So driving in winter can be a bit nerve racking. Gets sideways really easy. Like a spool. entry is 6817794. wow tons of pjs in the family that's awesome!
From Oregon. Don't have a ZJ yet but thinking of getting one with either a 4.7 or 5.9 V8 motor. Just became a subscriber today. Good Video. Had a Jeep Cherokee XJ and loved her. Currently building a LJ right now and wife as a 4 door JKU.
entry is 6817764, right on man good luck on the lj project
Really like this channel! Keep it up!
right on thanks man!
I'm from Canada, great video EH!
bro, lockers are a game changer... no discussion....
Great video nice to see zj for a change. Got one myself. From Montana

i put studded snows on a t-bird and was passing 4 wd trucks on snowy roads all the time, no lockers on the bird. best decision i ever made. better than chains, i could do high way speed
always nice to know on the lockers...have them front and back on my jeep. from Oregon here
wish I had lockers, all in due time. entry is 6817804 thanks for watching! I bet your 37s would do well here.
@@countryslickerofficial haven't been in deep snow here; only about a foot. the tires help with the clearance for sure.
Hey this is Raymond from North Carolina got my trusty Dodge Ram stuck in the snow couple weekends ago wish I would have had two lockers so now I'm going to find out if I can get them since I have to put a new clutch in my truck power steering pump and master clutch cylinder and slave cylinder only got the clutch left to do and the rain has set in
Hearty greetings from the beautiful high deserts and forests of Idaho. 🙂
haha that's actually a really good idea on the drone! next time will be trying that, entry is 681 7776
I went for detroit soft lockers front and back on my TJ. Wish I had gone for an air locker in the front because when I get stuck now I've got no extra buttons 😒 it's winch time 😁 🔱🇬🇧
Awesome video though
thanks for the watch, winch is always king at the end of the day haha
Working on a wj overland with Quadra drive. And can’t wait to have fun with it

Greetings from the Mountains in southern California!!
That jeep sounds amazibg
Hey Country Slicker nice video you showed that there's a big difference in lockers versus none I'm from Southern Maryland and I own a 2019 Wrangler Sahara Unlimited lifted and a 2001 Xj Sport 4'' lift OME on 31's and will install lockers,
sounds like some solid rigs! thanks for watching and your entry number is 6817795
Just got a new jeep rubicon. Watching from Kentucky. Hoping we get some snow like this sometime soon to test out my lockers!
can't wait to see the test of them! entry is 6817736
Dude! Love the content. The drone/cell phone hack was genius. I thought the same thing, but don't have a drone, nor ever needed that stuff. Also like the fact that you've admitted you are 'lazy to put the chains on'. Subscribed.
appreciate the love! and the sub, entry is 6817786

appreciate you watching, we live in a gorgeous country. your entry is 6817738
Lockright or spartan lockers are $350 each and a couple hours to install. Tire chains are a winter wheeling must.
I agree!
Got a spartan in my daily/snowplow/tractor XJ. That thing is really noisy.
I would not recommend to any one using in daily driver who isn't very good at driving in winter.
man I sure wish we had snow like that around here ,course I don't have lockers in yet either but they in the works
We have plenty of that for sure. Still no locker on my end
Here from Alberta.
This video makes me want to get lockers now

Brake lock diffs with traction control make a huge difference also .. way better than limited slip diff
Awesome drone text idea! BTW get lockers

Why didn't I ever think of using my drone. Absolutely no service on my property in the Catskills. Been thinking about the Ox lockers. Watching while sitting in my office in Manhattan-would rather be in my 97 ZJ in the woods.! nice video.
