Good point about visual balance with 85mm! The Sigma is a perfect lens, but I like the bokeh and character of the 85mm GM for portraits more. ❤

85mm 1.4 is my favourite as well. It is my first digital photography lens. I couldn't affort many lens so I choose that. And I've been using and only been using it for 10 years until I add another lens. Ended up I need to restudy other focal length.

What a timing on this video!
I’m traveling Japan and was just at a Bic Camera store today looking to downgrade from my Sigma 1.4 to the Sony 1.8 due to weight reduction. Couldn’t pull the trigger since the images from the Sony don’t have quite the same “otherworldly” effect. Now I think I’ll stick with Sigma until there’s an even lighter version available (Sony GM II soon?).
The reasons you mention here are exactly why I think it’s a very good focal length for street. We humans don’t have a good intuition of what the world looks like in 85mm so they always feel special. Yet it’s not so compressed that the environment completely disappears.
Enjoy your trip to Japan! I completely agree, if you have the budget, it's better to wait until the Sony 85mm GM II is announced.

Yes! 85mm is my fav focal length too! Being an introvert, staying afar and trying to isolate subjects, the narrow field is just nice!
Love the images on this one, nice photos Auxout-san. I wish there were a lightweight version of a lens like this. The sigma 90mm f2.8 has a nice size and weight, but f2.8 cannot compare to an f1.4... Hopefully if ever comes a mark II version of the Sony it could be smaller and lighter.
EDIT: I was reading around, and there are rumors that Sony's 85mm f1.4 II is coming soon 😅
Yah, There are rumors about the Sony 85mm GM II around, but I wonder when it will be released.
I have since a year a fantastic lens , sharpness , and great AF the only downside it's the minimal focus and if a compared to my Sony 50mm 1.2 I choose the sigma but the AF in the 50 it's incredible and impressive sharpness .
That's the strength of genuine lenses. Sony should quickly release the 85mm GM II!
I certainly agree that the Sigma 85mm is great, but I wouldn't seriously think of using smth like that for street photography...I did try once with the Samyang 85, and that was a bit uncomfortable. Though, I'm curious, have you used that specific Sigma, or any other from the 1.4 primes (35, 50, 85) for video? How do they work in that context?

I didn't use any filters. But add glow to some photos in the post.
I've been considering it for a while now, but watching your video makes me want to buy an 85mm prime lens even more! However, I'm still waiting for the Sony 85mm GM II. 😅 I heard a rumor that it will be announced in July. I hope that's true!
Sony 85mm was the first prime lens in the GM series, and it's already an 8-year-old lens. So if a GM II prime lens is coming, it will probably be this 85mm. The problem is when... There's also a saying, "The best time to buy is when you want it," you know!
