  • What was once a booming city of innovation and creation has seen its once former glory eroded by time and circumstance. Called home by bright minds such as the Wright Brothers, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and John H. Patterson, Dayton, OH was a homing beacon for creative minds with a drive to better themselves and their community.
At one time hailed as the Gem City of the US, the once-great city has fallen on hard times and is struggling to build and rebrand itself in a modern world. Without it’s corporate giants backing the production lines, the city has fallen to rust and ruin like many other Midwestern cities. Shattered: A City Under Pressure seeks to answer the question of can a city and its people ever recover from a fall from grace? Will the city ever be able to pick up its shattered pieces and reinvent itself?

My family moved out of Dayton in 1971. By 1975, most of my neighborhood left Dayton. They moved to nearby smaller towns. The last time I went to Montgomery County, it seemed like the whole county was swallowed by urban sprawl. I lived in a middle class quiet neighborhood in a small township at the very edge of the city limits in Dayton.

Thank you for the inspiration to create a video like this before my Graduation. Props to you on scoring a job by having this experience. RUclipsrs do not get this appreciation, because it is all for “likes”, themselves, sponsors, or money. This is for You. This is for Ohio. That’s what was nice about what you did. Education. History. Well done. Gave me some great ideas.

This was fantastic Colin! You and your team really did a great job on this. Super interesting to see the history of Dayton, some of which I was not aware of. Great to see Mr L and Mr M add their comments as well.

I understand this is an 18 minute video but 95% of the story isn’t told and of the 5% that was told 95% of the information is missing. What happened is glossed over and why it happened is omitted. A simple “the story of Dayton and Detroit, MI are identical” at the beginning would have added some perspective.

I enjoyed it. I worked in film distribution in Hollywood for many years. I'm now a teacher in Dayton. I'll be showing this to my students. Many kids don't know the history of Dayton, and this illuminates it perfectly.

Great job on this video! I can see this being something playing at Carrillon Park. I wish they would've added a little bit as to the history of the Dayton Triangles as one of the chartering members of what is now considered the NFL ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dayton_Triangles ). And also a discussion about the Great Flood could've added some additional context to Dayton's rich history. Thank you for this video!
