KitchenAid Pasta Attachment cleaning (What they didn't tell you!) ▶ salmonella & e-coli

  • After using this KitchenAid pasta attachment over a year now we take great care in the cleaning process after each use. We followed the instruction booklet and looked at the link online BUT until today while looking at the pasta plates just a bit closer we uncovered a Dirty Secret that KitchenAid failed to mention.
So why does Kitchen Aid not want to tell us how to clean the plates the correct way? I'm not sure how they missed this step in the cleaning process but even the KitchenAid instruction video from them directly does NOT cover this step rather just a simple wipe and your good.
Raw eggs are one of the main ingredients in dough, which help keep the dough together. Raw eggs have been linked to diseases like salmonella and e-coli, which both can be quite detrimental to your health. So be sure to follow our video and make sure you are cleaning the attachments correctly to avoid getting sick!

Excellent tip! I ordered a pasta press today and I'm happy I saw this video before I started using the attachment. I'm not a germophobe, but I do try to keep my food equipment clean, especially if I'm going to use it in videos. Thanks for sharing this useful secret on RUclips. I will definitely put this trick into practice. -Dennis

WHY! Would kitchenaid not supply these instructions? It would be a mold and weevil attractant without this! Thank you!

Oh geeze. I noticed that older iterations of this accessory used to include a plastic storage case and a recipe booklet. I just got one and it has neither of these things. Glad I watched your video and the hack for that cleaning tip.

Mine being a week old I was looking at trying something like this. Glad I cam across your vid, thanks. A simple thing I'd think for KitchenAid to design it with insert tabs for taking apart and cleaning. So much easier than the hunt and pick method.

I’ve been doing that since I got it. But the old dough isn’t a problem since you don’t eat pasta raw any way. I also wouldn’t use that tool because it could bend the plastic and change its shape along the edges. I just pop it apart and let it dry for a day or who and then it cleans easily. It is a shame the manual isn’t great.

Thanks for this. I got mine not too long ago and I've only used it once but I'll definitely go back in and clean out that disc with this method. Maybe it's just me but I don't mind poking out the dough bits, but I do like the idea of being able to get all that old stuff outta there.

I love this video which show the proper hack cleaning. It kinda gross of the amount stuff collected which unable to clean after a year! and with no proper cleaning manual. And the KitchenAid stand mixer, it mentione is still made in the USA. They've been manufactured in the KitchenAid factory in Greenville, Ohio since 1941, coming in 8 models and over 30 different colors.

That's why they clearly say do not wash remember you're using flour eggs and water it's the eggs you have to worry about in the flour that's why you can't wash the old fashioned steel pasta machines either they give you a little brush to brush all that gunk out it really won't hurt you but if you do wet it that's where bacteria starts growing inside those discs. I do the same thing with my discs once in awhile I open them up and give them a good cleanse. Otherwise it's a pretty good setup. So happy pasta making happy arrivederci

That is helpful, although I would recommend a different tool than the sharp blade to separate the pieces.. Contacting Salmonella or E.Coli would be very remote. Eating raw pasta, like any batter, is not advised . Dried pasta is not going to result in an illness. Drying, freezing, boiling all kill bacteria. Getting batter residue out of the discs is a good idea.

Good to know. Raw dough with or without egg won't present much of a problem to health. This because bacteria need moisture to survive and unless you are using it pretty often the dough will become quite desiccated.
Then there is the fact that you will be cooking the pasta you just made so that'll kill anything. The dough won't breed things like Botchulinum which is toxic no matter how dead and cooked it is.
But this is good to know. I like my things clean.
