One of the greatest most underrated battles of all time. Cleanliness intensity dexterity all wrapped in one between two amazing programs. I watch this video numerous times and I still come up with a tie.
This was an outstanding example of the HBCU marching band experience. Both bands were true to their personalities. I enjoyed every minute of this great battle.
Ice Cream Man by BCU was amazing. Did anyone catch the percussion work? afro cuban groove with a clave on the cowbell... they actually made the instruments talk...
Now this was a battle. All the over blowing and screaming doesn't impress me, quality of sound and song selection puts a smile on my face. This was a damn good one!!! Both Bands have my respect!
Nobody lost to me,I believe these 2 HBCU had the longest 5th quarter in history. For them to know that many songs is amazing....Uniformality wise(BCU) song selection (TSU) sound wise(BCU/TSU)
Wooooooooow I am very impressed with the clear musical notes as well as the overall production. I must be honest these two bands are extraordinary great ......... I mean I have no complaints and I love the fact this a real battle of the bands ( right) I have enjoyed every song through out this wonderful battle................. I wish for continued health and success Much LOVED to both BANDS peace
Very few people really get to see how deep our book goes unless you come to Daytona. Man, this took me back. Most of these songs never get brought out. Shout out to TSU for taking us there. Great 5th by both. Hail Wildcats...
BCU is a great band. They have a way of salvaging the past and creating new sounds. They can take from the old and turn it into something new and powerful. Go Wildcats!
tsu got this all the way hands down. they had better songs and they matched there sound. dontget me wrong bcu was robotic as always but this is what tsu is known for. SIZE DO NOT MATTER TSU DID THE DAMN THANG!!!
Whomever is in the burgandy n white killed it. Yall have great sound and tone. That old school joint yall played at the beginning was beautiful. The best I heard so far....
Love the TSU lower brass and song book. As usual BCC is great too. I enjoyed the contrast in arrangments, from both schools. I hope all of them are music majors, and began teaching our children musicianship. Great job, both bands.
congradulations to both bands...i know y'all had to be tired...i fell asleep and woke back up and y'all was still playin" music here on U tube....oh to be young and have all that energy!!!!!!
as a TSU fan....the first time i heard BCU live was at the HONDA back in JANURARY. but after watching this....i have a new found RESPECT for their band. it was like neither band was gonna quit. Good job both bands.
Tnsu and Txsu are similar and I got chills when Tnsu played "take your time" by the SOS band because when we played Tnsu my first year we played that same song against them my very first road game as a crab in the Ocean.
I was here, and I have to say as a former Marching Wildcat that TSU took this. I will also say that B-CU have NEVER been a stand band at all. Technicality goes to TSU, Sound Quality Cookman numbers don't matter because we are talking about the overall quality and not the volume. Book of course goes to TSU. Halftime goes to Cookman.
BCU is a very good band dynamics are excellent crescendos are all that ever instrument is heard because the director keeps his drummers in balance ok for all you musicly incline wanna bees i played in the Ocean of Soul in 82 _ 86
Floyd I don't remember you I was in the tuba section with Georgetown, Derrick Wilson, Chris Wilson, Thurman king, Ronnie Alexander they called me bubba. What section were you in? Remember Derrick hunt, crazy ass Richard Neeley. I was the lead dog on the spr 81 line with pops and wild Turkey
TSU won hands down. We started playing first and left a lil stank at the end!!! BCU is very good I enjoyed every second. BCU has a lot of singing and dancing songs, I do believe that they are technical. TSU is just to strong any time you go up against a band that has you beat by a ratio of 2-1 and still hold your on or better still be able to out play as far as sound, tech, dynamics and the depth of the songs. That is a win in my book any day. I was in the band so I can hear curtain things that the average person may not be paying attention too. Best 5th quarter ever. Two thumbs up for both bands. I know how hard it is to practice every fucking day.
I am an old head from TSU and I currently live in Florida and both bands have done a wonderful job but I am always going to love home. Jamaica funk....yes and a graduate of TSU, keep it going with John Legend...love them crats. S- psi.
Mad respect to TSU for holding it down in the OVC conference as the only HBCU. You guys sound great too. I gotta stick with BCU cause they sound superior and my brother marched there.
I just wanna give a shout out to all of yalls bladders. Depends would be my best friend or my nickname would be Peedie F Baby. My hats off to BCU for playing with such a quality sound for an 1 1/2 hr 5th Quar after having had put on a halftime show
I say that TSU won this battle because of the simple fact they use dynamics and they play with more musicality than anything else whereas but phone Cookman was playing with more power which would be good for a MEAC such as A&T... I don't really know what conference Tennessee State is in but to me they sound like a swac band but I like their style better
Dude Cookman has played with dynamics since forever. What do you mean? They don't do all the outrageous things that other bands do with all the screaming and crap. That keeps the sound thick and phat!
True that they do play wit dynamics but it's something TSU's style of playing and using dynamics that i like and also their articulation on certain notes....also they know how to hold their ground against bigger bands such as BCU....However, both bands are great :)
They're good and I've been watching their rise. Norfolk needs wins over A&T, Miles and Jackson State before they start looking to get in the stratosphere. They're definitely on the rise though and a band to watch.
First off if you cookman wasnt always requested and videotaped so often the songs they and sound they produce would be extraordinary too alot of folk but even still being at the top we're still respect for evrything that we produce...
One of the greatest most underrated battles of all time. Cleanliness intensity dexterity all wrapped in one between two amazing programs. I watch this video numerous times and I still come up with a tie.
We won't see a fifth quarter like this in a long time.....two clean but powerful bands going toe to toe....
Su and Famu 5th quarter was actually good like this!
This will be enjoyed by band heads for an eternity. Both top notch programs put on a show.
Both bands did great!!! BCU is still the best, but I got mad respect to TSU
BCU is very technical and i appreciate their musicianship
They are really good aren't they.
Tsu is just as good
Still one of the best fifths out there. The rematch didn't live up to this battle at all.
This was a great battle. I can listen to both bands all day.
Both bands sound amazing
My freshman year. That was a really fun time in the stands that night.
bcu's articulation is out of this world
Who still watching this in 2019? Those marches at the end gave me life...hot damn me!
2024
Now this was a battle. All the over blowing and screaming doesn't impress me, quality of sound and song selection puts a smile on my face. This was a damn good one!!! Both Bands have my respect!
Still sounds good in 2020. I rag BCU a lot but they did it in this one. TSU was on point too!
TSU gave me chills. I wish bands played like this today. BTW if I was a dancer or their line I would be living for the song selection omg
Nobody lost to me,I believe these 2 HBCU had the longest 5th quarter in history. For them to know that many songs is amazing....Uniformality wise(BCU) song selection (TSU) sound wise(BCU/TSU)
+snatcha snatcha there have been longer battles...I'm amazed BcU stayed for a battle this long though.
MrKyoko85 really? What bands are those?
+snatcha snatcha SU vs Alcorn(the originator's of the 5th), SU vs jsu, bama State vs AAMU, Famu vs SU
+MrKyoko85 and you're telling me they went for almost 2 hours?
+snatcha snatcha yup. various years. especially su/jsu
The sun was up when the battle started... and the stars were out when it ended. Wow.
TSU sounded good but BCU is in a class of their own. W goes to BCU
Shiiiiiidddd
+Carl Randolph lol
@@sneakypete139 🤣
Wooooooooow I am very impressed with the clear musical notes as well as the overall production. I must be honest these two bands are extraordinary great ......... I mean I have no complaints and I love the fact this a real battle of the bands ( right)
I have enjoyed every song through out this wonderful battle.................
I wish for continued health and success
Much LOVED to both BANDS
peace
The best 5th Quarter I've heard since the '95 Southern Heritage Classic!
True story, a few years after that, the 98 Heritage Classic is what made me commit to Bethune Cookman. Great 5th. Hail Wildcats.
TSU is the only band I ever heard play a Sade song and actually sounds good.
I've never seen a 5th quarter this long. This was lethal.
Very few people really get to see how deep our book goes unless you come to Daytona. Man, this took me back. Most of these songs never get brought out. Shout out to TSU for taking us there. Great 5th by both. Hail Wildcats...
I see you Dean.....Best arranger i have ever met...AOB own BCU...Just from technicality...
BCU is a great band. They have a way of salvaging the past and creating new sounds. They can take from the old and turn it into something new and powerful. Go Wildcats!
WoW! This is probably one of the greatest 5th's I've EVER seen! TSU Tubas though!!!
tsu got this all the way hands down. they had better songs and they matched there sound. dontget me wrong bcu was robotic as always but this is what tsu is known for. SIZE DO NOT MATTER TSU DID THE DAMN THANG!!!
True
Errrrr, in this case size mattered! lol. TSu got noting but swallowed. yet they sound good.
@@thevideoknife hell naw I take tsu that over bcu
You’re not and honest person..it wasn’t even close..TSU jumping like ants heading in every directions on the majority of their renditions..
TSU should be in the Meac they sound good
Best 5th quarter battle period!!! Both bands went hard! Much respect!
great horns from both sides WOW !
They are paying respect to each other by ending with a fanfare that shows their musicianship..NC 👦 Guy
the dynamics in Purple Carnival... SUPERB!
its amazing how i can sit down and watch bands perform for hours
Both bands were great but TSU had some serious sound for a smaller band!
Bethune Cookman played the hell out of "Betcha by Golly Wow" Kudos Cookman!!
From an ex-rattler, that was beautifully done, I appreciate that the percussion didn't overpower the piece. Awesome arrangement.
Remember playing in this battle!! Both of us were turnt up...
i come here often =)
That 007 was off the chain!
I loving this. Brings me back!
Both sound dam good
Nice way to end a battle with a #CLASSIC AND #CLASSY fanfare showing your musicianship. Volume control .....hats off to both bands..enjoyed...NC 👦 Guy
This battle made me a TnSU fan
This is one of them ONCE IN LONG TIME MOMENTS..They both performe well.
I finally got through watching this beginning to end.
Whomever is in the burgandy n white killed it. Yall have great sound and tone. That old school joint yall played at the beginning was beautiful. The best I heard so far....
The maroon and gold band is bethune cookman university the pride. Thank you for the compliment
Love the TSU lower brass and song book. As usual BCC is great too. I enjoyed the contrast in arrangments, from both schools. I hope all of them are music majors, and began teaching our children musicianship. Great job, both bands.
TNSU has always had one of the best books of all HBCU's.
Cookman sounded amazing as always.
When BCU's percussion section gets on the tambourine, cowbell, and such #fire #halloffame
Nice and sweeter..Ms Houston would be proud.
NC 👦 Guy
it really went from day to night in this video wow
This might be as long if not longer than the legendary MBC vs NSU 5th from 2001 🤤
That thump tho! TSU basses when they played Hay
congradulations to both bands...i know y'all had to be tired...i fell asleep and woke back up and y'all was still playin" music here on U tube....oh to be young and have all that energy!!!!!!
as a TSU fan....the first time i heard BCU live was at the HONDA back in JANURARY. but after watching this....i have a new found RESPECT for their band. it was like neither band was gonna quit. Good job both bands.
TSU's Song Selection Dominated BCU's But Much Respect To These Two HBCU Power Houses
Both band we great in overall sound.. And percussion.. We can understand what they played clearly..
Tnsu and Txsu are similar and I got chills when Tnsu played "take your time" by the SOS band because when we played Tnsu my first year we played that same song against them my very first road game as a crab in the Ocean.

I have such an appreciation for class and dignity in musicianship HBCU Marching Bands!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾😡👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

The sound quality of BCU was better than TSU. Song selection is the only thing TSU trumped BCU in.
This is one of the better 5th quarter battles in the last decade
59:23 is amazing
What a battle I didnt really go for anybody battle was to good and interesting...GOOD sound from both sides
I am an old head from TSU and I currently live in Florida and both bands have done a wonderful job but I am always going to love home. Jamaica funk....yes and a graduate of TSU, keep it going with John Legend...love them crats. S- psi.
11 years later and this shit still hit
im a fan of music and this shit was dope af to me
Great battle!!!
Hell I look forward to them playing it.
Loved this!
We all did superb both bands
I got to share this. NC 👦 Guy
Aint no foolin with Bethune. Period. Best in the land.
bcu's balance and dynamic contrast is beautiful.
That's what I said, but no one wanted to listen.
TSU won in my eyes , they showed musicality in everything they played. Don't get me wrong BCU was amazing as well .
your whole comment has bias written all over it! There was no comparison. A clear difference in favor of BCU.
Loud doesn't always mean better
Tyrus Cromartie BCU never played the who was louder card lol.. SOUND QUALITY
Just looking at this battle again after months... MY GOODNESS THIS WAS A VEEEEERRRRRRY LONG BATTLE!!!!
I love this!!!!
a tie ok i analized
Mad respect to TSU for holding it down in the OVC conference as the only HBCU. You guys sound great too. I gotta stick with BCU cause they sound superior and my brother marched there.
That tuba rip on big ballin from TSU killed it smdh
hell yea
JSU is my number 1 band, TnSU is number 2 and BCU is my number 3. Just love everything about BCU. Keep up the tradition. Love the unity.
What about SU?
loving the bands
I just wanna give a shout out to all of yalls bladders. Depends would be my best friend or my nickname would be Peedie F Baby. My hats off to BCU for playing with such a quality sound for an 1 1/2 hr 5th Quar after having had put on a halftime show

TSU is in the Ohio Valley Conference.
TSU trumpets at 51:12 killed that note
Man, them Low F's at 51:35 from the tubas... .that did it for me!!!!!
I WANNA SEE BCC VS. SU... TWO DIFFERENT STYLES BUT TWO POWERFUL WELL BALANCED BANDS!!!
SHSfynest lol u thought 😭
31 tubas?!?!?!?!\
TSU hands down I want to see a TSU vs Norfolk St battle
No you don't. Norfolk ain't there yet.
They're good and I've been watching their rise. Norfolk needs wins over A&T, Miles and Jackson State before they start looking to get in the stratosphere. They're definitely on the rise though and a band to watch.
TSU played the hell out that L.T.D Ballard
That echo on Before i let go is amazing
The arrangement at 2.13 is beautiful!
Can't Wait for Next Sunday. LP Field finna be back. JMC finna be hype this year, and I finally get to see the 14k.
Man, both of these bands do good to have any lips left to THIS DAY after this long 5th.
First off if you cookman wasnt always requested and videotaped so often the songs they and sound they produce would be extraordinary too alot of folk but even still being at the top we're still respect for evrything that we produce...
I favor songs with choruses and bridges over rap tunes during the 5th quarter. But like stated, TSU's book had me grooving.
Bcu all the way. Both bands do represent the HBCU title proudly and show that great things and much success comes out of an HBCU setting.
I live in Nashville, TN. Went to TSU for a hot second. I will say they lost this battle. BCU killed it. Much respect.
You crazy. You got something against TSU don't you?
David Thornton you must owe them money, huh!!!! Lmao (You sound bitter)
