    Nothing about this evening was a "Battle", we played to each other to give each line a taste of what we do. This is the first time in the modern Big 8 era that we have had the opportunity to play with an HBCU line and we were only given a small amount of time before Bethune had to load back on to the buses. Everyone on Big 8 had nothing but the utmost respect for Sudden Impact and that is shown at the end of this video.

      Way late here, but man. I'm so glad you said that. When I first went to watch, I thought "is Bethune sure they really want to battle?" Glad to know it wasn't like that, and you're right. The ending really shows that. Too bad they didn't have more time to mingle.

    Phenomenal!!!!!! I enjoyed both lines, but there's nothing like the sound of the HBCU! Love the respect given by both lines at the end. A mutual respect for excellent musicianship on both sides.
    Always believed that the televised halftime should feature more of this excellence!! Well done BCU and FSU!!!

    I'm half way through, and I must say...FSU played like they'd been waiting for this moment, for all their lives! My mom went to Bethune, my dad went to FAMU, my brother and sister went to FSU, so by default I'm a Nole (not sure how that algebraic formulation formulates, but it did and will continue to for eternity)

    I'm torn in between the two!! I've always been a Big 8 fan since my playing days, but I started loving Cookman when I attended my first Florida Classic. I love Cookmans precision and cleanliness. They don't sound like your typical HBCU drumline. Hats off to them for this one, I think they took the cake! Those snares were on point!

    I like seeing videos like this. It's good to see our SWAC and MEAC bands showing off more than their showmanship and getting into "battle" with other schools and drum corps to make them think about it

    I was at the game, but didn't see this, so first off, thanks for sharing the video. BCU rocked the stadium and was an absolute blast to see and listen to. The chiefs don't quite get down like that LOL So the Wildcats were a special treat for us. But, holy cow, our Big 8 is bad ass. Yes it was long, but it was awesome. I wish BCU had more time but it was great to see the respect at the end. Great job all around.

      Sequence is an FSU tradition. It is added to every year by the current Big8 line. That's why it is so long. And every year the new Big8 members have to learn the WHOLE DAMN THING and then figure out something to ADD to it.

    They both did great. Honestly I understand why ppl say Fsu won but it wasn't really fair considering they played for like 10 min non stop. Bethune barely got to show off anything. So I say great job to both but next time lets not play any of those super long cadences during a battle.

    The long cadence that FSU played is called "The Big Eight Sequence". It's their stadium entrance cadence. They play it from their pregame show as they march the half mile or so to the stadium. Most other bands will just use one of their shorter field entrance/exit cadences and repeat as necessary. Not Big 8, they've had this same cadence for 20+ years, adding to it and tweaking it every year.
    I actually went to this game and BC's rocked the house, but as a drummer FSU is far more technical.

  • @tdoggobl
    @tdoggobl 9 лет назад +4

    To be clear, it was BCU's tenor line that was way too close to the camera. This was a very nice play around. FSU did not win simply because they played a cadence for 9 minutes. They did not win because they are corp and show lines are inferior (totally not true). Both lines met at the beginning of the season and did their thing. I'd love to see them meet in November.

    I'm actually really surprised that the ending to Sequence was put in this early. I think they worked it in the week prior to this because it wasn't in place yet as of the Nevada game. You could tell as the end snares were having troubles when it got near that part. Especially the poor kid on the far left of camera.

    are you people watching the same video that I am? fsu keeps doing the same stuff and for a battle that cadence went to long. BCU cadences flow together the problem is the difference in conference. a core style vs a more seasoned drumline. I have to give the W to BCU.

    Two different styles of percussion coming together to showcase their respective divisions should be about fun. Not who is the best. Both programs practice in similar styles. This is a debate that has gone on since the late 1800's when Marching percussion moved from a unison style of play to adopt a more melodic movement in the Battery section to make the music more interesting for the pieces that were common in the early years. Corps-style programs focus on working the sections with the techniques needed for the music that is to be played later in the season. Most Show-style programs focus on the culture that has been developed to showcase Cadences as their bread and butter since most Chart hits are simplistic in nature. Not to say programs don't have a Percussion staff that write more involved pieces for the section, but this unison style is still prevalent in most programs. You cannot choose a winner it is impossible in my opinion. Why not respect both programs for even coming together in a mature manner. In both programs you have to earn the right to even play. From the story in the description this showcase of talent was difficult to even make happen. I wish both cultures would just respect the other instead of making it into a debate. Percussion is difficult enough to showcase as is, they approached the meet up with respect and integrity.
    What more do you want ?
