In this Adobe Illustrator tutorial, we will create our very own golden ratio spiral rectangle (Fibonacci sequence) and then use the techniques we’ve learned to create a series of circles that we can overlay on a sketch in Illustrator and use the Shaper Tool to quickly hack away and join shapes together to create a simple flat, negative space icon. This technique is effective for so many different design applications and I think you’ll really love this! Thanks for watching!

I owe my entire career to you Tutvid. I am a single mother who learned Adobe products using your tutorials years ago! I was a secretary and I volunteered to do graphic design work and web design work using WordPress. Eventually I proved my worth and now our business management company has a marketing department where's before we didn't. So thanks for everything! ❤️
Classified Information Well I was just considering buying some of his tutorials, great to hear your experience 😊
you think he was the first to draw a bird? :D
yeah, he is doing so.. I would actually recomend Lynda, but this is "ok"
you are amazing lady and respectful mother, you learned from RUclips a lot to get your own job. i'm single man who lost a country and future, living in EU without job! and like you, coz of RUclips and people like this gentleman, i become a designer. your child will be very proud coz of you.
Alen Tomasevic Lynda is crap
Hey thank-you for this tutorial. One question why do you prefer shaper tool instead of shape builder tool?
Yeah I''m curious about this too.
Sir gee, yaha bhi ap
Old Hindi films
Old man
I don't have the Shaper Tool (Illustrator CS5)
Same here.. why you didn't use shape builder tool
You started with the golden ratio then stopped using it after creating the spiral.
Thanks for the tutorial. but for that 1.618 thing, I'd like to use scale tool and press ALT -> 100%/1.618 -> copy, then press Ctrl + D whatever times you want.
That's a great way to do it too!
thanks man
i´dont know why, but when i put the " 500px / 1.618" i get a tiny square with 0,309 px =/
Anyone knows why ?!
even i am getting same thin.did you find the solution?
Had the same prob, change the dot for a comma .... 1.618 -> 1,618
@@noeliagarcia8642 ty!
I can see the shape builder tool crying
oof
I was wondering the same thing, why isn't he using the Shape Builder tool
hello my dark blue
I had a prob in AI CC 2018 (mac) where the smart guides don't show. I toggled command-U and that got them working again, in case there's anyone out there reading this who's experiencing the same bug. Great tutorials!
I feel like I never knew how to use illustrator after watching this haha. SOOOOOO useful thank you !
I have a problem, when i divide it by 1.618 it just turn so small, please help
same
Amazing tutorial, taught me a lot of new stuff about logo design. I just have a question that keeps coming back to me every time I watch a logo tutorial where the Fibonacci sequence is being used. I am trying to understand what is the whole point of making these circles withing squares and then rotating them into a spiral when you can just create a circle and duplicate it a bunch of times, dividing every next copy by 1.618 in terms of scale? Is there something I don't understand or are these really a bunch of unnecessary extra steps?
This is my question also. Seems kind of unnecessary. Also, wouldn't using circles that scaled up or down proportionately to any size still work?
For speed I would record two actions one for divide by 1.618 and a second for plus by 1.618. Set the action pallet to button mode then it’s a one click process.
Oooh, that's a *spicy good idea.* I'll have to play around with it in the future. Thanks for sharing your knowledge in the comments! 🍻
I had the same idea but I can't get it to work. Every time I press the play button the transform panel pops up.
How I do that?
This is not working for me. The action just scales the object to the exact pts from recording.
The ratio is about proportions between primary, secondary, and tertiary forms! If you stack any number of shapes, even if they have the right proportion between each other, it won't work. It's like the 60-30-10 rule for colors, you cannot keep adding colors just because their coverage respect one of the threshold... Also if you keep relying on rules that you don't fully understand you'll make 2 mistakes. 1st people will see that your work is sloppy even if you think that you are covered by THE RULE. 2nd You won't develop a personal sense of balance because "I'm using THE RULE, why should I double check my composition".
I thought the guy had misunderstood the whole point of the golden ration, thanks for validating that im not crazy. ;)
I thought that.. I guess the angles of the curves follow the rule somewhat because they're based on size.. ? But don't see any actual use of ratios here in design
Can you explain to me how it functions like the 60 30 10 rule? Correct me if I'm wrong, are you implying that the base shape is supposed to be the biggest circle and has to be more visible than the rest of the minor circles? Does it also mean that the smaller circles are the accents?
@@ayemjake he's saying that even though you're following the correct proportions/ration that if you add a bunch of random shapes it won't work. I believe they're saying the same about colors and if you use a bunch of poorly planned colors than the 60 30 10 rule won't help.
I saw this video because I was looking for a logical explanation about using the golden ratio for design. First I found a totally illogical explanation and kept seeking until I found this, that seemed more logical but still, there were things that I thought were not right, and then I read your post. Now, can you tell me where can I find reliable information about using correctly the golden ratio for designing? What's the rule? how to apply it? any examples. Thanks for your help.
doesnt work when im typing /1.618 its super super small... dont what the problem is

The Golden Ratio myth was debunked long ago (just keep everything gridded and proportional to itself), but this was very informative as far as seeing how to use the Shaper tool to create an logo/icon. Also made me look into the differences between Shaper and Shape Builder!
THANK YOU, i am designer from Eindhoven (HOLLAND), I learn a lot of this movie, I like it ..Once again :THANKS.
I agree
Awesome tutorial! You are the real MVP!
Only thing.. i had a hard time doing it on my own, because on AI (CC) after i hit EXPAND, the only options is FILL and STROKE. Option OBJECT is shaded and AI doesn't let me to mark it. Anyone knows solution?
Fianlly understood the "GOLDEN RATION" ....... but applying it would be a challenge !!!!!!!!
My english is not too good. So i cant understand what key combination he use there 11:52. Can someone please tell me? Thank in advance :).
The key combination is Ctrl + J .. using this you join two points. (srry too for my bad english)
Brundo Toza Thanks Bro!
WHAT DO YOU HAVE AGAINST PHIL? YOU'RE ALWAYS LOOKING TO REMOVE PHIL! STOP TRYING TO GET RID OF PHIL! PHIL IS A GOOD GUY!
This design matches with the logo of ADNOC... Abu Dhabi National Oil Corporation....which has a Falcon in it.... I love the ADNOC logo and its entire branding.....
I'm using Ilustrator CC 2015 and could not use the Join Tool, it does not cut the lines of overlapping circles.
Interesting way to create an illustration of the golden ratio and then make a logo that's NOT AT ALL compliant to the golden ratio by taking a bunch of proportionately sized circles and cobbling them together in a way that sort of resembles the thing you were after, but in no way represents the relationships of the golden ratio -- to produce an outcome that is absolutely NOT a logo that either demonstrates or complies to the golden ratio in any real way. This was an absolutely ridiculous waste of time that in no way teaches nor demonstrates geometric theory you are talking about.

bruh
Fantastic video! But i have a problem. I cant click expand and mark object. Object is greyed out. Can somebody help me?
Thank god you're back, Nate! I think a lot of people are thankful that you are back to tuts and not moving to instagram.
Thank you for the best tutorial. can you help me, the Object option in the Expand dialog is unavailable, how to enabled it? and I also can not find the shaper tool in Illustrator CS6
same here

Thanks for sharing ur tutorial..but i just can use CorelDraw..
Wow you talk so incredibly fast ive never had to use pause and rewind as much as i did in this video 😭😭
finally i understand what golden ratio is . perfect tutorial
Hello, can you help me .. I created the square and wanted to divide it into the golden ratio, but the shape becomes distorted, either too large or vice versa .. knowing that I work in the measurement unit Cm
bro go to gym and eat healthy 2 cut it short dont die early bro just until you reach 100 so we can see these miracles .. lot of love from Tanzania
Your content amazing but i have problem with your speedy voice😐
So many unnecessary steps could have been avoided if shape builder tool was used. Thanks for the golden ratio concept though.
“Arigato...Gyro”
absolutely stunnig explanation of the most wonderful number!!! thank you!
You are a big fucking help, mate! Bless you and your great fucking career!
awesome video just followed you on IG
referencing a square as a rectangle isnt technically wrong, i think it's proper to consider a sqaure a subset of a rectangle.
this is THE most helpful illustrator video I ever watched and believe me I ve watched a LOT!! thanks for having no annoying music and for being quick
Is that a Jojo's Bizarre Adventure reference?
There is no Shaper tool in my illustrator CC 2015. Is there an alternative to trim the circle?
Hello, this was the best tutorial on the internet, good job! And a question, if you can answer I will be grateful ... How do you export your videos to RUclips? Do you have any tutorials? Thank you again.
Thank you for making this video! I haven't even finished it yet and it's already 10x more helpful than other golden ratio design videos because you're actually explaining your step by step thought process of how to USE the circles. All other videos just show them laying over various circles in hyperlapse to make designs with background music and I just leave confused because they didn't talk about how the circles work in the design, the roles the circles and the ratio play, how to apply it to my own design, nothing. All in all, THANK YOU for making this SO much easier to understand.
Thank you for this tutorial, but more sample, better and quicker way to fix the issue at 12:51 is with the fill shape tool and then expend everything.
Why the A4 (etc.) sheet's proportions not based on the golden ratio?
So was the idea behind constructing the golden spiral when all you needed were circles scaled in the golden ratio?
I think, you've complicated a bit.
I'd heard alot about the Golden ratio but didn't quite know how to apply it. One tutvid tutorial after and I'm ready to save the world with the golden ratio. Thank you.
Superb absolute amazing. very well explained. Thank you very much sir for this great tutorial.
I have cs6 and the shaper tool is not on on there is there another tool that can do something similar. Or am I just not able to find the tool?
First time seeing a tutorial video with the light theme 😮. Nice tutorial
you kinda sound like howard from better call saul
what apps did he use? again??
or what another possible apps that use to create a golden ratio?
How can you have the ''Shaper Tool'' i have ''Shape Builder Tool''?
What is this?!! totally unpracticable. smh
Hi! This is a very good beginner video! I teach children in art and at my school we don‘t have Adobe Illustrator. Do you mind if I create a tutorial in German for YouiDraw based on your video? I will of course link your original video. Thanks!
I wonder if this can be done in Clip Paint Studio?
I've spent my life with Geometry and ø. Huge universe. You probably know that the circle can be divided into two arcs of the Ø ratio. This creates a lot of cool relationships. Thanks for the video and akso the magnifying glass that pinpoints what you are doing and where you are doing it from.
i have AI CS6, v16.0.0.. i cant find any shaper tools, i only have shape builder tools.. is it something wrong with my AI or adobe remove the shaper tools?
Amazing video! Finally, I understand the Golden Ratio in design! Thanks!
Very nice, thank you man 🍻
Honestly, I wish I could like this more than once! excellent.
If someone could help me. I am looking for the geometric forms, spirals that grow forward and then return at the same point (and grow (if it possible ) backward, and so on? A Kind of the loops in the growth in exponential expansion. Thanks
Ctrl + Y is crying when he aligned it
Hi, can i use this logo for my company?
thank you so much, amazing tutorial
but although my English is good, but you are speaking so quickly so my brain couldn't translate :p
please help people to understand you :)
The Rule of Thirds is basically a simplification of the Golden Rule.
While its ratio doesn’t equate to that of 1:1.618.
Proper implementation in composition will give you roughly the same desired effect,
and very easy to envision and implement compared to the Golden Ratio.
This tutorial is what exactly I need. Thank you very much!
Very good to see you again, you're a Legend and an Inspiration to me. I've been watching your videos since 2007, before RUclips had HD videos. Hope all is well with you and the family.
what is the commend to use for join the paths plz
Wonderful, wonderful work. I'm a beginner in this area and this is really helpful to me.
Nice tut. But why go through all the process of creating a spiral? why not just create a perfect circle and then multiply or divide by 1.618 to get the next one??.
Ooooor heres a crazy idea... You could just create a symmetrical circle and divide it by 1.618 every time you need it. No need for the golden ratio bollocks.
Conspiracy theory👀..... Are you vocal pineapple????👀👀👀👀
I've got that "keep the same hight and lenght"_thing on but somehow illustrator still fucks up
Couldn’t expand object because the object is disable in my illustrator.
One thing i didn't understand that how to create a website and poster layout from golden ratio 😫
i cannot unhear 1.618 anymore
Never heard of this rule before, thank you!
Is there anything wrong with my pre settings??? When i draw the square and the circle, the circle is always slightly bigger. like 0,5px .... it messes up everything that follows on that. please help me, people.
Uncheck "Use preview bounds" in Preferences
I really appreciate the way you use the tools! Excellent explanation and short cut tips.
Anyone know why, even if I have constrain width and height proportions enabled, my objects do not maintain perfect proportions? it's always off by less than a pixel
The first thing I learned when I started using Premiere Pro was to use Adjustment Layers, when I started using After Effects, it was to use Easy Ease and, now, when I begin using Illustrator is 1.618. LOL.
Hi Nathaniel, can you help me something? Do you have any tutorial on expand? On 2:54 you seems to disable fill and stroke. Before this, practically I do expand everything for a logo. I used to make school logo and I need to expand them in order to prevent stroke issue in scaling up entire logo. Can you help me to do in better way or just tutorial on object expand and expand appearance? Thanks a lot
This was helpful omg
Golden ratio design has been debunked plenty of times, sorry to burst your bubble.
I'm new to illustrator, I actually didn't understand these math based tutorials! What does this Golden Ratio Design mean?
Awesome! Thank you for the time to share. ***Appreciated!***
BEAUTIFUL VIDEO
finally a good golden ratio tutorial
Thank you so much, Daniyal! 🍻
There are quite a few good ones, for example by Mohamed Achraf.
Good stuff, but that's not technically a Fibonacci spiral at the beginning. It's just a golden ratio spiral. Related, but not the same.
Dude slow down with your speech
which version of illustrator is this ?
I just want to know Something, what's the difference between .ai and .ait? (adobe illustrator and Adobe Illustrator Template ). I can open both of them in Illustrator, and both of them show the same result. (I saved the golden ration project as .ai and .ait and both seem to work the same, I couldn't see the difference) Any Clarification guys?
i don't have that top bar mentioned at 3:29 and am not sure how to get it. I tried dragging a couple of windows up there but none of them will sit how i want them to
no sooner than i typed this comment did i find what i was looking for. if you can't find that box either, in the upper right-hand corner there's a drop-down menu. mine was set to "Essentials," but i switched it to "Essentials Classic"
Please may we go through your CC settings as i cannot follow some of your moves or think maybe my pc is not handling the programme ......
Thank you so much for explaining! It’s so helpful to me!
Thank you very much♥️
What a great teacher you are ⚔️
Great tutorial! Thanks for helping me learn today. 100 extra points if you can tell me where you got "Get it. Got it. Good." from :)
