    Alright so when I’m not making dumb RUclips videos or taking photos, I work on a film set as a grip, or sometimes in the construction department as a carpenter… First things first, Obviously the title of this video is meant to raise a question, but I think people are answering before considering the question deeply enough. The future of Filmmaking is EXTREMELY precarious right now… shows are going down or being hugely scaled back because of AI, contract disputes, poor funding, and a whole host of other reasons. We saw three shows fold because they could produce it more cheaply with AI & VR… with Script writing becoming easier with AI too, we just don’t know what the future of filmmaking is on a commercial & feature level.
    It’s similar to when Netflix started producing content and people were like… is Netflix going to be the next big movie studio? A lot of people laughed at it, said no, and watched them snag every award they could. So, all the people cutting their teeth on a free platform like RUclips, getting better and better every year and taking those skills AND connections to brands, I think it’s pretty obvious that the future of filmmaking is, at least in part, in the hands of solo creators, most of which are on RUclips. This is just the new independent film movement, and people don’t want to take it seriously because when you get to see how the sausage is made, it throws you off. Seeing brand integration or sponsored videos makes it feel like it’s not real art, but it is precisely the same thing as brand deals for movies, press junkets, or any other form of sponsorship or press… Long live the RUclips Creator. Great video, Cam.

      BINGO. Now obviously I made this video to generate conversations around what’s going on underground rn. You hit the nail on the head, I feel RUclips is going to become a sector in independent filmmaking. As Hollywood possibly destroys itself for cutting story for profit.. people will starts craving more independent films. The numbers already show RUclips is dominating in total viewership.. like do people really think that filmmakers aren’t going to utilize this the same way the great filmmakers form the past utilize whatever sources were available for them back in the day..

    I’ll play devil’s advocate and say no, they’re not the future of filmmaking. While RUclips has been acquiring a growing share of the content we all consume, it has earned that share by being an alternative to traditional content. What we like about RUclipsrs is different than what we like about film and television.
    That doesn’t mean that a RUclipsr can’t cross over and become a filmmaker, but I don’t see that as an integral mechanic to the future of mainstream narrative content. I think the future is bright for RUclipsrs, but not necessarily as providers of premium quality narrative films.

    From an outsider who has friends in the industry, YT is the dominant distributor. If creators go the route of filmmaking they will have the biggest advantage once the industry as a whole shifts. Camera technology advancements, sound advancements, and editing advancements had lessened the barrier to entry. I think there is a stigma still towards sophistication, but if the industry were to throw just 1/10th of the marking dollars towards a release on YT they'll do dramatically more numbers than in theaters viewer wise. You have creators with millions of views on single videos, long form film content marketed properly would do insane. The freedom of the creator also is expanded. Just my perspective.

    • @cammackey
      @cammackey  2 месяца назад +4

      Pinned this. I dont think people get it. Obviously we have everything from jaded filmmakers, people who watch yet hate, and people who speak without any personal actions.. but everyone putting in work, actively creating and producing, being apart of the growing industry.. all see whats happening. I think everyone has mixed feelings on it. But this has happened multiple times in history. Theater to Radio. Radio to Theaters. Theaters to TV. TV to Streaming. Streaming to.. take a wild guess.

    • @picxlmedia7856
      @picxlmedia7856 2 месяца назад +2

      This is a good point! I don't know if they're the dominant distributor. Just because of the cost to film wouldn't suffice what you'd make on YT. I think it's great to look at other distribution methods outside of the studios for independent production.

    • @AntiFinanceGuru
      @AntiFinanceGuru 2 месяца назад

      @@picxlmedia7856 I do think it would be cost prohibitive for a large release until a major player comes in and releases on the platform and they create a different CPM/RPM category that is higher for Film. I do however believe there are other strategic options to employ like in scene sponsors that contribute to effectively finance the film on the front end. If YT created a standardization of bit rate/quality like Netflix does along with additional monetization requirements and minimums I think they could establish a whole new creator level that could be tapped into.

    • @AntiFinanceGuru

      @@cammackey I think what's killing the streaming services (and movie theaters, even) is not the number of views. It isn't necessarily the quality of the production; although the story quality of many major releases makes you wonder about the sanity of the production teams. No, what's killing them is the shaky economic/financial basis of the business model. I've said for ten years that streaming services HAVE TO find a way to make their services profitable. When you hear of business that has at its heart a "growth business model," you can read into that: HIGH capital inputs, LOW returns, but HIGH interest and investments. If you business model requires the growth of new paying subscribers to keep your business afloat, you know that unless you figure something out the business will eventually crash. Netflix can have millions of views for a particular show, but if it doesn't draw in new subscribers, they're still fucked. You cannot grow new paying subscribers indefinitely. To this point, NONE of the streaming services have been profitable. It's all been a negative capital outflow, losing money hand over fist. But up until recently before the economic downturn, the expansion in new subscribers had offset their losses.
      ... and now the streamers have reached the end of the road with their growth business model. And this brings us to RUclips.
      Will studios and streamers start investing producing RUclips stories? Tough to say. They're already competing with hundreds of thousands of quality channels and getting eyes on new products is harder than it seems. Also, what's the business model? I can see how a RUclipsr or a group of RUclipsrs can collectively pool their resources to create a short film, as you've done, but does that work for a studio/production company? In other words, if they spend a million dollars to produce an hour-and-a-half film and release it on RUclips, will the revenue generated by RUclips exceed the production cost? And if so, by how much? What is the rate of return that will make the capital investment worthwhile to begin with?
      It is one thing to have ONE person, a RUclipsr, generating revenue for himself on RUclips that will justify his investment in time and money. It is another thing to have a studio, with all their employees and interests and bureaucracies, releasing a film on RUclips. Will the revenue generated by the studio release of a film on RUclips cover the cost for all the people involved in that production? It's tall order, I'd say. If studios participate on RUclips, their productions have to be slashed to the bone to satisfy that investment/return ratio, to make it work at all for them. Otherwise, it'll be just another failing business model, like the current streamers.

    Definitely will be an avenue that will definitely develop into its own thing. Opportunities etc. with funding and exposure. I am on quite a few very large productions from Netflix/Amazon/Appletv for features and other features that are outside of that space then at times TVC and music videos and can say it is definitely a conversation piece that pops up but is another chicken and the egg issue of people getting the right kind of experience to raise their game enough to work on bigger things vs making up the process as they go along as "content creators" based on what they see on youtube being a self sustaining circle of creative procrastination. If people actually put what they learn into practice vs just talk or blogging about the idea of making films then this is definitely something that will in my own opinion build a niche of films created by content creators. I know that youtubing is a massive job in itself so the irony is that I see RUclipsrs as unchecked teachers. When would they find time to create anything beyond short form content? I look forward to all of it because the consumer wins with more creations hitting the screens either way. :)

    I make my own money outside of film (you with RUclips), I purchased an ARRI Alexa Mini LF, I fund my own films, I sell them at the American Film Market, I also won a Walmart sponsored category at the American Black Film Festival last month and guess what, Walmart has my film on their RUclips channel. What’s the difference in that and what you’re describing here? I didn’t fund my films with a RUclips channel but seriously what’s the difference.

I work in editing and color grading on feature films in France and the only movie that I worked on that shot RAW was a way of compensating for the DOP's mistakes. I got the opportunity to work on some Cannes movies and none were in RAW. So I don't really get the need for overhyping "RAW" when you have a great camera and great DOP... (And btw this is a genuine question, because it seems to be a very important feature for everyone on youtube and I don't know why)

    • @cammackey
      @cammackey  Месяц назад

      I think it’s a mix answer. Some cameras do give you better quality on raw. Some don’t. For run n gun filmmaking, raw can really save you. On a feature, you probably don’t need it as much depending on your camera. A lot of the more affordable cameras don’t shoot 4:4:4 or even standard Pro Res.. but will give you raw options. So would you rather shoot in h265 or raw.. specially if there’s more data on that raw for larger screens. If you’re only working on feature projects with proper cinema cameras, then yeah, raw isn’t always needed.

    Reminds me a bit of early Netflix, that was why many went to make film over there, there is the freedom and funding, and slowly that's merged back into mainstream hollywood / become it's own hollywood mess 🙃

    Om namaste.
    Very soon a new strong player will enter the video hosting market and will significantly move RUclips into second place.
    The new player has extensive experience in film production.
    The new video hosting will adhere to high standards of content quality.
    this will happen very soon. And also soon the entire film industry will change forever. Every person who has the creative desire to make a MOVIE will be able to reach the viewer.
    Netflix will very soon enter the video hosting market and RUclips will not be able to compete with Netflix in terms of the quality of creative real cinema.
    THANK YOU

      I know of that, but I disagree. You’re saying the same Netflix that keeps pumping out these pure garbage films.. are going to out produce the creativity of independent creators? Pass.
      Netflix puts out 2-3 good films a year and the other 50 are hot trash. We all know it. They are not Spotify. It’ll take them forever to learn how to curate the thousands of pockets of niches that people can find anytime they want on RUclips. Quality control? More like financial control.

    Narrative filmmaking is all about the story. If you can sustain studio quality for a feature length film with compelling writing and acting you'll have a product people will want to see and you can make money. Shooting shorts with a full crew on location is not a viable business model except for the various RUclipsrs who can add the content to their monetized channel. Everyone on that set needs to make a living wage which in SoCal means 100 grand gross per year. We've always been able to shoot high quality shorts with talented friends but it's always for fun and experience and maybe some exposure. RUclips may give you a chance to make money while being creative and having fun but I doubt the entire crew all have monetized channels. I guess my answer is no. At least until you can create enough high quality content so that everyone helping is able to eat and pay rent.

    • @cammackey
      @cammackey  2 месяца назад +1

      I appreciate your comment. Though the original question was are RUclipsRS, not "RUclips". But yes I agree partially. Cause if we wanna go with "compelling writing and acting" then majority of the stuff coming from hollywood rn doesnt count hahaha. I think the hardest part, even for myself, is accepting that feature length story telling could change sadly. Its like how music went from selling album to only singles.

    RUclipsr is an ambiguous label.
    RUclips is freeing up future film makes the way musicians were freed up to get their music out without needing to only go through established record labels. So youtubers are a significant part of the future of film making. As long as the label doesn't get equated with having a leg up on story telling quality.
    So in that context of the label, yes.
    In the context of all these "influencers" I coming across with their cinematic vlogs where they take 5 minutes to make a bowl of cereal, I say no.

      A handful of people actually. And I believe we’re going to see even more of it moving into the future. Imagine if we had a Ridley Scott or Michael Bay being raised in this current climate…. Imagine how they would be utilizing this resource. People get so foolish thinking that “filmmakers” are above RUclips. The great utilize very resource they had available and also had to fight against the old ways of thinking while they were pushing the limits.
