This is GOLD. Well done. I've been a fashion/celeb photographer for 20 years now, and when I first started there was no RUclips to see a video to break this down for me. Aspiring photographers: Save this video, watch it daily and then go do what the dude says.
"The environment you were raised in describes the texture of your vision." Beautiful. From the clothing our grandparents wore, to the brands of food in our cupboards, to the architecture and flora of where we grew up, whatever it is, we all have such different experiences and memories to draw from in forming our visual language. But I've never heard it put so succinctly. One of your absolute best videos ever.
This is awesome. I describe it as being internally focused vs externally focused. If you spend too much time outside of yourself you will compare yourself to too much that is out of your control. Concentrate on the art. Get over yourself. I love that.
YES, THANK YOU Cam for some real talk. I can tell you were 100% sincere in this talk, and I really connected with it. Even though I don’t even like swearing, but I see how genuine you are here. And you bet I’ll show up for your next sermon!!! Lots of love from a fellow creative with ADHD.
This was good Cam. Love the straight up no filter approach. Our sensibilities are the same. We even have the same name. I haven’t shot in a while and this inspired me to shoot tomorrow. Thx 🙏🏼
I am a Toronto based photographer that jumped down the photography rabbit hole ten years ago. I didn't go to school for photography and I consider myself to be a perfectionist, which is my biggest downfall. When you mentioned people being their own worst critics it really hit home. I can't tell you how much work I have trashed over the years because it didn't fit my standards. Sad part is I don't even think I knew what my standards were at the time. It caused so much wasted time and unnecessary stress. Sometimes you need an outside perspective on things. Great video, great insight. Thanks for the upload.
They can be the same for me. The nostalgia that can bring you immense gratitude for having and experience it. And then there’s nostalgia of pop culture and things that don’t affect the way we were raised but just textures of the past.
Thanks for sharing. I've been shooting professionally for over 30 years. It amazes me how many photographers don't practice! Get off your butt, and practice! Buy a cheap mannequin head and set up different lighting scenarios - natural and artificial light. Try high ISO settings to see how far you can push your camera in low light situations. I would routinely test lighting a day before a shoot to make sure I knew what to expect. Any artist or athlete who wants to improve has to practice. There's no shortcuts.
I really respect and appreciate your honesty and openness on this video. Your life sounds incredibly interesting and yet challenging and for you to share that with your audience is appreciated. It does indeed help me understand how you think about photography so thank you
this kinda honesty and openness to truth - at least to yourself - is the kinda light to cut through the worlds BS of opinions and "realities" and judging obsessions... highly appreciated 🙏
i love the fact you can learn something from each shoot. I would get bored if I wasn't learning new things. and social media isn't the enemy I find it inspiring if I see other do great work it pushed me to get better. thanks for this video. loved what you had to say
I’m a month away from my 1st ever show where I’ll be selling my prints. Been feeling kinda iffy on how it’ll do… low self confidence but this video helps. Go and do. Live and learn.
In my short photography career of 6 years here in Los Angeles, your work has inspired me the most to keep going! Thank you for your work, and letting us into your process over the years. It's truly meant a lot to me.
“You are already yourself” ❤ Absolutely beautiful ! Thanks for the motivation. I keep making excuses on starting my RUclips channel. Because I see the comments and the bullshit y’all have to put up with, and I’m not sure if I’m ready for that sometimes you just say F people.
This video is such a broad and effective manifesto. Growing up, many of us are NEVER told any variation of "work on yourself" or "CLARIFY yourself." People say, "Do what i tell you, its the only way," and then they say, "be yourself," but thats so vague it means almost nothing. Early in the video you said that you don't have to find yourself, you already exist, just learn how to express what's there. Many of us never learn (i learned VERY late) that this means clarifying whats already there, finding out how to give a voice to the chaotic soup of unspoken thoughts that have been there all along. This is the most enduring thing that ive learned from over 20 years of creating and understanding the creative process, and its really empowering to hear you put that in your very personal terms.
Fantastic video! I know I'm not the only one who needed to hear some of this. As a full-time photographer currently exploring an ADHD diagnosis, I would love to hear a deeper dive into how ADHD has impacted your life as a creative. Thank you for being an inspiration!
Best video I have seen on RUclips in a LONG WHILE. Thank you so much Cam, this gave me the insight I needed to continue to build my identity as a photographer! You da man!
That's what I needed to hear right now. Well, I am not a "professional" most of the times, but I pour a lot of soul into my passion. I always wondered if I'd ever develop a recognizable style in photography or videography, but yes, I guess so. It might have happened at the point I started caring about it and it goes on. Some great advice in these words of yours, nailed it 🙌🏼
Great video, thanks for the honesty. I'm 59 and got addicted to cameras and photos from the age of 6 or 7. I'll shoot the lightbulb in the lounge room while I'm sitting there, (I have toned down a bit lol). My mother-in-law once asked her daughter/ my wife if I was ok because I was always with a camera and shooting anything .....🤣
Talking about the road trips takes me back to the road trips I took in the 80s with my grandparents from TX to AZ. I vividly remember seeing these types of scenes that I remember in the stops at truck stops and then the stops at the road side attractions! Thanks for this video! I grew up in the 80s so the fashion of the magazines and work from, Peter Lindberg, Helmut Newton and Herb Ritts are the corner stones of my work these days as far as feel goes. But growing up reading old time life magazines in B&W that my grandparents had also play in heavily to my style...so B&W is a huge portion of my personal work! Again thanks for the video and it needed to be said. SO many lose themselves in the throws and grip of social media of I have to be like this person or that person. They miss the point. BE YOURSELF! All that Pirate language! ARGH!!!!
Such a good clip. Love that you get so engaged and passionate at the end. Thanks for reminding me of what is so obvious, if you dare take the step towards really knowing yourself.
It’s good to bare your soul and talk from the heart. People often struggle in silence and feel alone. Voicing your story and sharing your perspective may change some lives for the better. Thanks for being you.
@@cammackey I came across it when doing some research on the ZF. However, have gone beyond your gear reviews, and have shared your stuff with friends. I really enjoy and appreciate your content.
I'm currently in this cycle of doubting everything I create, be it past or current, my ADHD also plays into it. Thank you for the video and giving your perspective on this. I would love to see your take on ADHD / mental struggle and photography. Love your work, all the best!
Yeah! Preach! Haha. Seriously, loved this video - keep doing them! You’re super inspiring - your work is amazing but I love your humility and no-bullshit ethos as well.
Was good to hear honestly. I've been shooting a bunch and sharing very little the last two months because I've been looking for my "Voice" or "Style" really helps to hear I just need to make what's interesting to me and follow the rabbit haha- This video reminded me of two quotes. that go something like" Photography is an infinite pursuit of perfections" and " The best picture is the next frame on your roll, and the next next one after that" I appreciate you man!
Glad you still "do it" enjoy way more than the gear bullshit that is everywhere. Your talks on gear, enjoy listening as can see that you actually have, or would use, a "sell out" is always quite clear on this platform. I will always show up, real talk, conversations, they work for us that matter. Thanks (best advice I needed today, just go shoot, and DGAF)
I really appreciate this video. Very reassuring yet a great reminder to have better outlook upon myself and the surrounding world. I feel like this has helped me to have more focus and effort into creating my own work more often instead of dedicating majority of my creativity to the shoots that I have during my full time job.
Damn man all the topics you have stated in this video. I thought about and struggled with. Really appreciate your insight and wisdom. You really one of my biggest inspirations in this field we go through. I hope we get to hear more of you thoughts and opinions like this in the future 🔥
This is the valuable stuff that really helps people course-correct on their artistic journey. It sucks that the gear focused videos are what gets views but I think that's because it's easier to look for distractions and blame gear when trying to get better at the craft. I hope you keep making more of these.
Hey! I'm glad I discovered your channel one day a long time ago. Your videos are great overall, but these words..... That's what I needed to hear right now. Thank you!
Very good video. This is the kind of stuff I struggle to figure out and it gives me a lot to think about... Sad reality that the tech RUclips audience pretty much only wants to see gear validation, upgrade path, and the "should I switch" content nowadays... but I am glad you are pushing through that. Your content is fantastic.
Love this Cam. This is why I tell any newbie. FILM FIRST. Learn to setup and seek out something worth shooting. Create a space and then capture it. No one anymore has a cognitive connection through their corpus colosseum to realize that they should be a little spatial. Let go. Take a min. Fucking chill. Gear means nothing. Gear only gets the result faster and speeds up the process. Keep doing these videos to motivate people. They need it. Even if they think they don’t. And Shania was hot as shit. 🔥🔥💯💯💯💯
damn, cam. I have really come to appreciate you pushing through the bullshit of the internet and continuing to be vulnerable and messy. it's really affirming to see somebody who has developed their vision skillfully and intentionally, and who still makes mistakes and gets excited about stuff. we're all just trying to make it through this wild ride! thanks for this introspection. way more useful than an x100v(i) or posting another instagram banger
Very interesting and thought provoking! I know I’m still struggling to find/define/describe my photography style. I’m over all the gear reviews so this was a great chance for some introspection! Love your work!
Artists are passionate. They are driven by their convictions. I’ve never met or worked with boring real artists. Fakers? A bunch. The ones that do their own thing make a difference.
Wow! You could tell this video comes from the heart. Well done. I want more from you about concepts, art, etc. I want you to know I'm old enough to be your grandfather and I got a hell of a lot out of this video. Thanks.
Dude that was solid... I'd love to hear how you've pushed through/ dealt with the hurdles adhd have created. Thanks for the transparency, this was actually super helpful.
I can totally relate to your comments. Focus on yourselves is the key takeaway. There is always time to not worry what others think. Only worry about staying true to yourself. 💪
One of the best points in my photography was when I realized that I had a style that was my own and decided to lean into it rather than trying to be someone or something else, popular or not. Good video!
This is probably some of the best advice I've ever heard. I've met so many photographers that ask more about the camera gear than the actual look and they always say oh man if only I had that camera I could get the same shots and I'm like " nahhhhh You just got to have the vision" Great videos as always!

I would say the most important thing is surrounding yourself with positive people that like you and your work and sharing a similar taste. I surrounded my self way to long with horrible people, and that completely destroys creativity, selfesteem, motivation everything. I am ok with being a worse videographer and photographer than many online but the people around me and i must have simply a healthy team spirit. Focussing on giving each other support and a feeling of accomplishment first. Because the learning happens anyway, but if you focus too much on everything that went wrong it is a show stopper. The most iconic shot of the titanic movie is not sharp, you could focus on that alone making everything look bad or you could celebrate the amazing movie together with your team. This is the spirit i want.
Yeah feck that shit lol. Thanks Bro. Love the realness and the “stop caring what everyone thinks” vibe. So true. It’s a killer. It gets in the way of life, living, creating, joy, success. Awesome! Love ya man, keep creating. ❤
Well said!!! I'd rather watch something heartfelt and genuine over a gear review any day. TBH, I don't really watch gear videos unless I'm having issues getting equipment setup.
"Be nice to people, don't be a dick" Words to live by Cam. Thanks for all the great content you produce and the advice you give. Cheers from Australia.
❤ I think mental health is an important but overlooked part of being an artist. 15+ years as a non-pro, obsessive about photography. Been through the whole style thing, realised that we never stop evolving and perfect doesn’t exist a long time ago but still never posted my work anywhere as I have huge perfectionism anxiety.
What an incredible video. This is one of my favorite channels, and I love your style and content. (I will always be tuning in!) And your advice here is golden! Thank you so much for sharing Cam. (Btw, I was also a 90’s kid / teen. Love the memories from those days. 😊)
The part about not giving a fuck about your cringe era is so important. Dont delete from your memory, your ig page, your framed prints, etc. Our heroes are not gods. Every last one of the greatest went through the cringey era. It's a part of our story, and makes us human and relatable. It makes you real. Embrace your suck, and know its way cooler to see someones progression thru the years as opposed to them making it seem like they were always perfect, because that's just a front.
Yo bro, great advice. I’m never satisfied with my photography. I have this feeling that my photos suck which pushes me to keep learning and keep moving forward. I agree 💯 to never become complicit with your photography. 🤙
Serendipitous indeed bredren… just as I was feeling the funk of my latest very tiny Insta post…an image I felt connected to somehow but no one else did..and I was considering deleting to “fit” in betta…your post popped up…thanks!
"Confidence looks cocky in the eyes of the insecure."
Loved the time you made to speak on the mental health elements. Great work brother.

I appreciate this a ton. Real talk about photography, it's not about gear. It's about this! Love the video brother!
“A feeling of immense gratitude.“ What a profound way to encapsulate the force that drives us onward. Bravo.
This right here is what we need more of. More real, more raw.
This is awesome. I describe it as being internally focused vs externally focused. If you spend too much time outside of yourself you will compare yourself to too much that is out of your control. Concentrate on the art. Get over yourself. I love that.
@cammackey speaking the truth. A true soul discussion here.
Great conversation. I have lost and found myself countless times and have finally learnt to enjoy the journey.

These words..they hit directly in the heart...thank you Cam I really appreciate it! 🙏
