Now adays in IT market salary discussion is done before giving the offer letter . What if we say higher salary and dont get the offer

One interviewer asked me what is the mathematical behind asking such high salary.
I am not asking anything high.
I knew the market rang of the position and the salaty of my colleagues at same position.

I was working in a industry from last 12 years (have qualification for that) but now industry dries down now i am in above age of 35 years. I went various organization to start in new industry but they do not consider my privious job experience. And if somehow offered job they offered below the salary of fresher ( which is not enogh to live and feed family basic requirement ) may be due to my age.
Just i want to know wrong from my side. I had good marks on my certificates, good experience, not cheated anyone. If my industry failed my whole graduation is now waste for employers.
And their is no minimum wages rule in this country or it may not be enough to survive.
Although i am managing my family responsibility by passive income cash flows.(and the salary offers are less than 5 times of my passive cash flows).

Doesn't work anymore. Recruiters will ask expectations before scheduling interview. If you ask more to HR you are kicked out next one will get the job.
Get multiple offer then negotiate

Negotiation is definitely a skill and you have made a great point. This is exactly why one should tread carefully while negotiating, make sure you are asking for a number or range that’s in line with industry benchmark, and come across as very flexible. That’ll help the recruiters feel comfortable negotiating with you too. All the best!
