Radio 4 took a typically radical step when it decided to adapt the story as depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry - 1066 and all that - with Christopher Eccleston as King Harold.
It was broadcast in an unusual format, with the first half comprising five daily instalments treated rather in the manner of news coverage, hence the narrating voice of Kirsty Wark (a respected veteran TV journalist in the UK).
