    Gorgeous pen Michael! Hopefully Visconti decide to sell this eventually. This is definitely my #GrailPen. Love that you have a new pen for a new book! I think I'm going to copy you and start a personal tradition of buying a new pen for each new book. I too have been writing out my first drafts this year after also having backup issues. I am using my 3 fountain pens, Waterman Carene (with Diamine Bilberry) and Visconti Van Gogh Starry Night (with Diamine Ancient Copper), for drafting. Using the Neil Gaiman method of alternating each pen on alternating days to show daily progress. I use my TWSBI Eco (with Diamine Red Dragon) for extra notes and editing.
    Enjoy your new pen! Good luck with the new book!

      +Kim Koning Hi, Kim - I do believe that once someone has used a Visconti it's impossible to go back to another pen. I only have the two, but I love them both. So smooth, so reliable, and such fabulous ink reservoirs! Good look with yours, and here's hoping you have a great writing New Year!

    Lovely pen, you are very fortunate Mr. Jecks, thankyou for sharing it with us. I like Marie-Paule also wonder if they will eventually market this model. Not seeing the ink level is always a worry with some piston/vacuum fillers if taking the pen away from the desk. The two reservoir system is very nice, although I barely ever get to fly.
    PS: I enjoyed your "For The Love of Old Bones" short story compilation and look forward to trying your Hundred Years War novels next on the Kindle.

      +Tony Strongman Thanks so much, Tony. It's always good to learn that people enjoy my work. If you like the medieval stories, don't forget my Templar series too! Enjoy the Hundred Years War stories, though. I should be getting the copyeditor's notes back on BLOOD OF INNOCENCE soon, so I'll be back into editing mode!

    • @writerlywitterings
      @writerlywitterings  9 лет назад

      +Tony Strongman Hmm. I should just add that I've never had a problem with the HS generally. The pen does suck up a vast amount of ink when you fill it, and it keeps going for ages even with my gushing medium nib! However, for this project I wanted to be able to show the ink colour in the pen as well as on the page, and Visconti were good enough to help with this special design.

    I am always happy when I discover, you have had uploaded a new video. Always when I am tired from work, I look for your vids and I am happy again. Now I perhaps have a proposal for a video. Writing a book by hand, how you correct some passages or sentences, while writing? With a Computer its easy, but with a pen, I mention it's quite complicated whithout having a mess on pages. Thank you, Manfred Knie, from Austria, the land of Mozart. ;-) All well done and good to get your books in German. Thank you

    • @writerlywitterings
      @writerlywitterings  8 лет назад

      I'll be happy to make a video about that, Manfred. Many thanks for the suggestion. It'll be a few days before I can record it, though, with work taking up a lot of time just now. I'm sorry that Heyne don't have any of my recent books, though. I think they have the first six or seven, but the last 33 books aren't in German as far as I know! Have you seen recent books in print?

  • @AlexRawlings
    @AlexRawlings 7 лет назад +1

    This pen has already come to my attention and the bronze version is definitely to my taste. I hand wrote my first two books and love the feeling of using a fountain pen, it actually helps me to get writing as I enjoy it so much. I will have to be patient though as my first book is yet to be printed and my second is due to go out to agents soon so I can't yet justify the expense.

    Wow. I am beyond jealous. I've always loved everything about my Homo Sapiens except the inability to see the ink level. Especially because mine has a 1.3mm stub and goes through ink pretty quickly. There's not much worse than settling in to write and running dry half a paragraph in. A visual heads up would be a perfect final feature to an already awesome pen.
    Enjoy, and best of luck with the new book! I just subscribed and can't wait to watch your progress.

      +Daniel Pyle Cheers, Daniel. I love my two HSs, but I do agree with the difficulty with the ink reservoir being hidden. Still, it won't stop me from using the older one as well (I do love that medium nib!). All best and thanks for subscribing.

      @writerlywitterings  7 лет назад +2

      I wouldn't let it stop you. Personally, I always found that the standard Bronze version I got several years ago was so efficient in filling that it would write for ages compared to a standard convertor pen. Whereas my Conway Stewarts would write a few pages, the Visconti was more than double, and if I used my Visconti Travelling Inkwell, it would load even more. Brilliant, brilliant pens.

    I am undecided between the three of them

    • @writerlywitterings
      @writerlywitterings  8 лет назад +1

      Julio, sorry - I didn't get a notification of your question. In short, though, all the pens are made of lava, and the material is just about bullet proof. I found some marks on one of my pens when it had been in a pocket with a metal zip - but it was the zip that had worn away on the stone of the pen's barrel. A wipe with a finger and the mark was gone! Absolutely superb pens. I recommend them.

  • @Olumin37

    Have you ever thought about using a typewriter for that purpose? You know, this is exactly what they where made for; heavy, intensive and extended writing. They are reasonably cheap, very reliable, clean to work with, nearly just as fast as writing with a computer keyboard, very uniform and legible to anyone, easy to use and just a joy to work with and type on.
    I will go ahead and recommend you a few machines that in my opinion are some of the best, but also common in the USA: Smith Corona Slient super & Olympia SM9, SM4
    If you just want something that works well and will keep working indefinitely go for the German made Olympia SM9, it doesn't look pretty tho. The SM4 is basically the same machine, but looks much nicer, has a heavier shift and costs a lot more.
    The Silent super has a much lighter shifting mechanism (comparable with the SM9) and is plenty and cheap to find in the USA, but not as well build as the Olympia's. Certainly also a joy to use.
    Now if you just want the non plus ultra go for a ERIKA 10, they are hard to find and expensive tho.
    One good typewriter especially for someone like you is always worth the investment, and you don't seem to mind spending a good bit on fountain pens, typewriters are not THAT expensive nowadays tho.
    Just make sure the seller packs the machine up VERY GOOD.

    • @writerlywitterings
      @writerlywitterings  8 лет назад

      I do have many typewriters, my friend, but just now I'm enjoying pen and paper because it means I don't even need to have a table nearby. Also, I find that handwriting means I get more thoughtful in the way that I write. It's an odd, but more flexible way to write, because I can ring sentences and move them with an arrow while I write. One day I'll go back to my typewriters. I have Olympia, Olivetti, and two small Silver Reeds!

    • @writerlywitterings
      @writerlywitterings  5 лет назад

      Hi, and many thanks for the question! Yes, it was a while ago, but that notepad is very distinctive. If you search across my channel for "Atoma", you will find a video where I show these pads:
      ruclips.net/video/UmiH94TunvM/видео.html
      The great thing is, they allow you to take pages out of the pad and then reinsert them elsewhere. It means you can have, for example, an A4 notebook, but an A6 pocket notepad, and when you have ideas, note them in the A6 in your pocket, and then take the pages from that and insert them into your A4 pad, or the A5 version. I also have to say, it is excellent paper Easily some of the best I've had in any notebook. Below is a link to a stationers that sells the Atoma systems, but do look up my video too, because it shows how the pads work.

      @gpolykra 5 лет назад

      Yeah since I wrote this I scroll down in your previous videos and watched it. Thanks for the reply though. I also went an cultpens before you show me this but the refills seem quite expensive. Of course is like buying a new notebook. But I guess since we are spending hundreds dollars on pens seems bizarre from my part to complain about the price of the rest of the stationary.

    • @writerlywitterings
      @writerlywitterings  5 лет назад +1

      To be honest, I don't think that Atoma is more costly than equivalent paper from Clairefontaine or other paper manufacturers. Be careful, though - if you buy a cheaper Atoma notebook, with the plastic cover and rings, you will find the paper is much cheaper and less effective - it's the version they sell for students, and that paper will be fine for roller ball, but fountain pens will feather and bleed through!

    • @writerlywitterings
      @writerlywitterings  5 лет назад +1

      I should just say too that you can buy the Atoma hole punch, which means you can use any paper you like. I've got one, and often use fine Bank paper (which is a cheaper version of 50 gsm than Tomoe). That way I get a lot of writing for my dollars!

    • @writerlywitterings
      @writerlywitterings  8 лет назад +2

      I do use some bullet proofs, but generally I don't dare put them into a good pen, just in case it blocks the feed or causes other irreparable damage. Glad you have a Visconti too. I love the Steel. This one of mine is a special that Visconti made for me so I can write my books and always see how much ink there is. It works a dream, and they may make a version to buy if enough people express interest.

      Hemant, I'm afraid the twin ink reservoir Homo Sapiens is not for sale. It was a special prototype which was given to me by Visconti's designer, Dante del Vecchio. The usual Homo Sapiens with the large capacity is on sale as the Visconti Homo Sapiens Bronze Age, and will be available from stationers. I know that Cult Pens here in the UK sell them, as do a number of other companies. I'm sure you could find them in your country as well, but I don't know the best firm to go to. Best of luck!

    Almost four years later Visconti released this upgraded model. Unfortunately they did it with the Bronze Age instead of the Steel Age version like the one featured here. The clear ring looks silvery which seems to clash with the bronze material, unlike the steel. I think even the Dark Age would have been a better choice, but this is all subjective.

    • @writerlywitterings
      @writerlywitterings  5 лет назад +1

      Very much so, but I can say that the pen (if it is the same as my model) is well worth buying in preference to a standard HS. Having the larger capacity is a great benefit. One of my great concerns about the Homo Sapiens has been the lack of ink window. For someone who also burns through ink at a rapid rate, I've preferred to stick with pens where you can easily see the ink level, either through the body of the pen, or by unscrewing the barrel. Do you know if these will be on general release, or just an MJ special?

    Do you have to unscrew the vacuum when you write for a long time with your old Visconti homo sapiens bronze age ?

    • @writerlywitterings
      @writerlywitterings  4 года назад

      Hi, AW S,
      With the usual Homo Sapiens, no. The ink can flow from the reservoir all the time while you write. With the new Skylight, you will have to keep refreshing the smaller reservoir, either by unscrewing and rescrewing the end cap, or by just leaving it open while writing. The older system has no shut-off valve, the newer dual reservoir system does. Hope that makes sense!
      Best

    Does the old Visconti Homo sapiens have the same volume of ink as the new Visconti Homo sapiens

    • @writerlywitterings
      @writerlywitterings  4 года назад

      There are different models of the Homo Sapiens, and they have different filling systems. My old Bronze Age model has a very good capacity. The capacity needs to be loaded ideally with a Visconti Travelling Inkwell (expensive, but really very effective). Without the inkwell, you will get 1/2 to 2/3rds of the pen filled. With the inkwell, you will fully fill the reservoir.
      Why? Because with an ordinary ink bottle, the vacuum is working against gravity. With the Travelling Inkwell, you can upend the inkwell and get gravity working with the vacuum. It fills to the brim.
      However, the newer models (Skylight for example) use a different reservoir system: the dual reservoir. They are still vacuum fillers, but as far as I can assess, they take 2-3 times as much ink. Again, they fill fully only when you use a Travelling Inkwell. This is not based on precise measurement, but mostly on the way that the pens keep on writing for days! If I had the choice, I would always go for the Skylight model in preference to the original: first because of the capacity, second because of the viewing windows.
      Hope that helps!

    Lucky you and congratulations on your new pen! Glad you got the fine nib you wanted.
    How is the handwriting coming along? Must be quite a bit slower than the computer (crashes apart)?

      +Allan Engelhardt Apologies for the delay in responding. I had thought I'd replied to this. It is slower, yes, but there are fewer interruptions, and I can concentrate better for longer. There's going to be a video later this week about how things are going. The pen is just wonderful, I have to admit.

      +FiveCatPenagerie Really sorry, it's not jeweling. The pen was being filmed underneath a series of LEDs, and the tiny individual reflections just gave that appearance! Next time I'll try to get a simple photo under one lamp. The smooth, high polish does look very good.

    Do you know if Visconti is planning on making this a regular?

    • @writerlywitterings
      @writerlywitterings  9 лет назад

      +Aaron Doucette Hi, Aaron - no guarantees, but I think that they will. It's such a logical progression for them, and it makes life with the HS a lot easier. Having said that, I always lived with the bronze HS with a travelling inkwell, and never had to worry about running out. For this project, though, this will make life a lot easier. Happy writing, my friend!

      I agree. I have had my HS for over a year and love it. Mine has a fine nib and was one of the first ones made so it has the 18K gold nib. Wonderful pen and writer. But I would greatly consider buying another if it had a double power filler. Can't wait to get Fields of Glory in the mail. I look forward to reading it.

      +Aaron Doucette My Bronze was one of the first Palladium nibs in Medium - a gusher, and gorgeous to write with! The new one is a fine, and I'm loving it too. Wonderful variation of line, and the fabulous power filler does store a vast amount of ink. Looking forward to actually getting started with it next week. Um... I am assuming you haven't bought FIELDS from me? I don't remember an order!

      +Aaron Doucette Amazon would be more cost effective for you - the trouble is, postage from the UK would be more than the cost of the book!

    Can you let me know the exact name of the Diamine ink that you used in the presentation of the new Visconti Homo Sapiens. It is really a nice color.
    Thanks for your answer and your videos

    • @writerlywitterings
      @writerlywitterings  8 лет назад

      +Patrick Dubruille Actually that one was an Edelstein from Pelikan because I was saving my Diamines for the writing project. The actual colour is Sapphire. A lovely colour, but very pricey. If you like it, I'd personally recommend looking at Diamine's Asa Blue, which is similar, but a richer colour for my money - and Diamine's inks are about half the price of Edelstein!

    Where can I buy this pen in the UK ?

      My personal recommendation would be Cult Pens - www.cultpens.com/c/q/brands/visconti/visconti-homo-sapiens - I've been dealing with Cult for a decade now, and always found them reliable and helpful. Hope you enjoy the pen!

    • @writerlywitterings

      I'm writing a book using it, and Visconti very kindly made it especially for me. It's the only Homo Sapiens with a second reservoir and viewing windows to see the ink.

      Evening Michael (or whatever time of day it is when you read this). Love the pen, (I bought the HS partly on the strength of your review) but I’m wondering if it’s worth contacting Visconti to suggest that your version would be well received by pen users around the World. A lot of reviews on RUclips refer to the lack of an ink window, and maybe if enough requests land their way ..?

      I only learned it myself a couple of days ago. Apparently he left Visconti in December. He and his business partner had some disagreements, and Dante decided to leave. Terrible shame. A brilliant, inventive designer, who did a huge amount for writers and writing.
