    One option I’d like to see them add would be a TALL side pocket. I carry water on the shoulder strap or in my pants pocket in a small 16oz flask.
    Extra water is in one side pocket, maybe in a 1 liter bladder for long dry spells, which I carry in the large front mesh pocket.
    I don’t need another low pocket for carrying water. But a fixed high pocket is extremely useful for confidently carrying a folded DCF tarp/tent, tent poles, rolled sleeping pad, etc.
    I find carrying such items cinched under a top strap has them sticking out to the side of the pack too much, and they’ll sometimes rub up against a tree I pass on tighter trails.

      You could use the side pockets and the compression straps to secure your gear. At the back / bottom of the pack there's a V strap loop. People use this for tents, pads, and chairs.

    Thanks for sharing the info on these. The uncertain durability with some of the newer fabrics is what has kept me with more classic UL packs, but I love the fabric designs and innovation here. Will definitely be checking these guys out again when it’s time for the next one.

    I agree almost 100% with all your observations and comments though I still believe a thicker should strap (more or better EVA foam) is needed. With 26 lbs. in my 46L I notice the EVA tends to flatten out eventually. I have the Older model Fast Track 35L with the stretchier front pocket as well an early 2023 full suspension 46. I also had the left shoulder pocket bungee pull loose. I just threaded it back in and sewed with heavier thread. I also contemplated the grommet idea and plan to add it in if either pulls out again. Glad to see LightAF is adding pleats to the front pocket as it is a bear to get stuff out of mine, especially when main body is fully loaded.

    As always, love your review and agree with a lot of your points. LiteAF does a great job with their thoughtfulness and thoroughness to address concerns. I’m curious if the top side pocket ever get in the way of putting water bottles in or out of the bottom one. Seems like if it’s sticking out it may be annoying to work around it but it may also be high enough that it’s not an issue.

    • @FrozensAdventures
      @FrozensAdventures  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hey Murica! The upper side pocket is high enough where it doesn't get in the way at all. 2 water bottles still work perfectly. It's good for a trowel and poop kit but you won't fit much more than a 1/4 a roll of toilet paper. It's about the same volume as a trekking pole handle.
      See you in a couple weeks!

    Very neat! I've been looking for a new pack that's lighter than my HMG. I've been looking at the Ultra fabric packs from Waymark and Evolved Supply Co. I do really like the tropic sunset design as well I may look into this pack a little more. Do you know if the Ultra fabric has the patterns printed as well as Dyneema? I believe that was an issue when Ultra first came out.

    • @FrozensAdventures
      @FrozensAdventures  7 месяцев назад +1

      EPXL has a tons of patterns compared to regular Ultra. Weight difference is negligible. EPXL is also made of recycled products.

    • @FrozensAdventures

      Epxl has been tested on full thru hikes. While I can't comment on the fabric itself (since I have limited experience with it) it's what I recently chose as my next pack which will be used on the PCT next year.

    I think challenge has done a lot for fixing the delam issue. They said they also switched from the recycled film to a virgin film which adheres better and is 50% thicker. I'm excited to see if it's resolved, cause outside of that issue, it seems really durable. I had a friend take an ultra pack on the PCT thru and outside of the delamination it fared really well. A lot better than my DCF pack did on the AT. And the bottom ultra-stretch pocket looked almost spotless.
    I don't know how much "gear news" you follow, but Dan Durston just announced a pack with a new fabric that he claims is more durable than ultra and less likely to delaminate. It looks really cool

    I've been wanting to get one of these bags for a while but I am a bit apprehensive with all the options to choose from. I would hate to order my first bag and then not be happy with the options I picked like size and what pockets to get. Any tips for first time bag buyers?

      I always get the shoulder strap pockets and call it a day. I use them all the time for everything. The trekking poles loops can be added at any time. Same as the shock cord for the sit pad.
      Personally I like the upper side pocket but just 1 is nice. Rarely use the bottom pocket. But a lot of people love it.

    so you have tried all the shoulderstraps on the market? :) havent tried LiteAF - but a fair bit of other cottage type UL frameless packs - most in general feels good due to the construction type and weight carried - if you are in the market for a frameless customizeable pack - definitely consider LiteAF - but from what i have tried, Bonfus, ALD, Atom packs, blind banana bags, red paw packs, and my personal favourite - Nashville packs are definitely also worth considering - depending on what type of configurations, sizes, shoulder straps, pocket... you want in your pack

    • @andymytys

      Not making packs anymore but the Alien Gear Novum 40 was the most comfortable frameless pack I’ve ever carried. I went 28 pounds starting weight on the Foothills Trail with it.
      Super wide shoulder straps and dual sternum straps played a big role in amping up the comfort level.

      havent tried - but nashville packs, ALD, red paw packs and others also mere super wide, running vest style straps with 2 or more sternum straps for better load distribution - i do 10 day trips with the cutaway, full gear and food for 10 days @@andymytys

      osprey, hyperlite and gregory i never really found that comfortable - palante i only tried briefly and it was good - but not as good as Red paw packs or nashville packs - i am just objecting to the "most comfortable frameless pack ever" when its "the most comfortable i have tried" - we need to get one of each really.... :D @@FrozensAdventures

    • @andymytys

      @@outsiderswalks5460 I’ve got the gen-1 cutaway. I like it but they made it a little narrow and it won’t hold a bear canister inside (no longer the case on a modern Cutaway). I found their pack to be comfortable to 25 pounds. I don’t like how everything seems to dump out of the large front pocket, or shift to the side pockets, when you take the gear out of the main pocket. That front-side pocket is something that sets their design apart, but I don’t find it as functional as a traditional design.

    such a loaded question, but i want to know which pack i should get first. i dont plan on hiking in winter (and really just need time to keep buying more gear) but the pack is whats really got me wondering what i should get. and what i get is kinda what im stuck with, but you always say not to start with a frameless pack. frameless packs do seem to be what i look into the most. i really like lite af packs, but dont even know where to start with size! i really plan on starting near a 15-20lb base weight BUT im new to this and im trying to do my research. i like the idea of the ranger by evolved supply, but at the same time idk! lite af is what id say is the best that i have seen so far but its so confusing to me as i just dont have one in my hands.

    • @FrozensAdventures
      @FrozensAdventures  7 месяцев назад

      Hey! At a 15 lbs base weight I'd look at a full suspension pack. When you get your baseweight down to the 10lbs range you can simply remove the stays and see if you are ready for a frameless pack. It will only be about a 4-6 ounce difference between a full suspension pack vs frameless pack. This can be achieved by removing the backpack stays (the frame) and cutting off the hipbelt (carefully). Lemme know if you have any questions!

      I have a LiteAF 46L framed. I could get by with the 40L about 97.2% of the time, but since it’s a roll top, I just don’t fill it as high, and roll it down smaller.
      The 46 is just a taller version of the 40, with all the extra volume at the top. The 46 is only a few dollars more expensive, and a few oz. Heavier than the 40. You have extra volume if you need it without much extra cost, or weight.
      It carries up to 35lbs more comfortably than the Osprey pack I had before it.

    • @FrozensAdventures
      @FrozensAdventures  7 месяцев назад

      The lowest full suspension pack they make is a 40L I believe. I suggest you get a comparable size trash bag and put your gear in to see what size will work for you.

    No matter how good their packs might be, I do not have guts to try one out becasue of thier awfull / threatening return policy.

    • @FrozensAdventures
      @FrozensAdventures  7 месяцев назад

      To my knowledge every cottage vendor has the same return policy.
      Zpacks: Unused, unmodified products are eligible for exchange of equal or lesser value or a full refund (less shipping) for 30 days after receipt
      Hyperlite: We do not accept returns on items that have been used, washed, or are damaged/missing original packaging.
      For LiteAF it's just 1 dude (the owner Chris) sewing the backpacks. He has maybe a couple other employees that do the accessories. I can understand the return policy after working retail in a previous (young) life.

      These are all custom made to order packs. So if someone orders a crazy color combination that is only appealing to them and then has to return it we are the ones that get stuck with the pack that no one else would ever want.
