I had the pleasure of meeting Prince’s engineer Susan Rogers at AES - she shared some of the same kind of experiences as did Mr. Hayes. What a blessing Prince was, and is.
Well done. My brother and I worked on Purple Rain as grips & later on many vids and films at Paisley Park. I could not believe how shy and kind Prince was to all the crew. Then watching him perform at 1st Ave he became the greatest showman and guitar player I'd ever seen.
That was so great! I was smiling and laughing the whole time. Mr. Hayes is so gracious and funny. When he talked about Prince's voice in his ear like the voice of God, I was rotfl-ing! Thank you, gentlemen! Looking forward to part 2!🖤🤘
More of Morris please! 🎶🎉🏆🎯💥👍💚😁 Fil, you knocked it outta the park on this interview. He's the real deal, old school. Props to you too being the badass guitarist that you are. Bravo!
This interview had me riveted and I can't wait to see the rest. Make them as long as you need to. We will watch! You were fantastic letting him talk, not interrupting. Only one other musician-interviewer does that (Rick Beato) and watching both of you interviewing experienced/"famous" folks is a joy. Some people make it so uncomfortable for the guest, it sends me away, stressed for them. Thank you so much for this coup! More well-known artists/songwriters/musicians need to find you. I am sure they will!
Wonderful synergy with the two of you! Morris is a truly enjoyable guy with a world of experience. Very fine interview. It was fun for me to hear him mention Anderson Cooper, another of my most favorite super-skilled interviewers. Can't wait for the next part!
‘Sir Fil’ and ‘Sir Morris Hayes’=COOL. Both Cool Cats! We/I are so privileged to have found/support Fil to enjoy this interview. I’m smiling and am sure Prince is too! ❤ 7:46
That was an incredible part 1! There were a lot of exciting and funny moments (which I'm sure wasn't so funny back then) in Morris's story of how he started out with Prince, and his experience working with him. He has high regards for you as anyone who watches your channel would. You're DOPE! Thank you Fil and Morris for a great interview, I'm looking forward to part 2.
Another great interview with & from great performers. It was so nice to listen to. I loved it & smiled all through it. 😊 May Prince go on being Prince wherever he is and let the Purple Rain come down on us. 🤘💜 Looking forward to Part 2.
Props to Morris for being generous with his time and talking about how things were done back in the day. Fil, great stuff! I'm looking forward to the rest of the interview.
Morris is a personal friend and I’ve had the chance to collaborate on things with him. I can tell you that apart from being a first-rate player and technician he’s just an amazingly kind person. It’s so cliche to say “he’s got a big heart…” But it fits - Morris has got a big heart. He’s also got a playful sense of wanting to try things and learn things and it makes him great to be around. I mean - imagine - he’s there in the studio with Prince and Prince wants to try something different… You can’t say “NO!” You have to try and that experimentation made him who he is today. Just a great, great guy! ❤❤❤
Hi! Part 1... enjoyed 😃 It was great to learn more about Morris Hayes and Prince. Looking forward to part 2. Thank you, Fil & Mr Hayes for your time. P.S. Yes, Fil! You rock 🖤🤘🏽
Great! Sounds like there was a lot of mutual respect between Prince & Morris. Respected each others musical knowledge. Looking forward to Part 2! Thanks Fil 👍
Wow... I can't believe that those 25 minutes flew by so fast. I was completely riveted by Morris, and everything he had to say. You are so great at conducting your interviews. You ask the perfect question, then allow your interviewee all the time they need to answer. Too many interviewers insist on constantly jumping in and trying to insert themselves into the interview too much. You were gracious enough to let Morris have the floor. I know you said that you had some issues during the interview because of Morris's wonky internet connection, but you were definitely able to edit around that, and give us 25 minutes of great stories by Morris. I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of the interview. Loved hearing him talk about how much you had impressed him with your guitar playing during your Prince video. And to hear him say out loud what all of us have always thought...you are THE dopest cat!! ❤
Another string to your bow Phil, what a good interview and letting the person interviewed speak and finish their thoughts without interuption, so thanks for that Morris was a great choice. So gracious of him to start the interview with those words about yourself, and so, so deserved if I may say!. Looking forward to part 2.
What a wonderful story Morris told! And this gave me a much bigger picture of what went on behind the scenes at a Prince concert. Looking forward to part 2!
This was a great interview and because of your musical acumen, you were able to bring forth new perspectives on Prince's approach to writing, producing, and performing. I have no idea how this got pass me (probably just work), but something told me to read my notifications and I see Morris Hayes - arguably the best champion for Prince outside of Dr. Funk and Morris Day. In addition, I noticed after watching all four videos that Morris Hayes really geninuenly respects and likes you. He read your body language, voice tone, connected with your questions, and provided space for you to frame thoughtful responses. This 4-part series was two musicians talking what they know and as a Prince Day 1 diehard "friend," I appreciate this interview (in all stages) so much. Your music analysis of various artists is amazing!
Liked your interview style as a sequence of edited stories from M Hayes. Got that backstage and onstage view of a demanding, stressful job for M Hayes working with Prince in the '80's.
Hi Fil, What an AMAZING interview. Morris is such a sweet nice wonderful man. And obviously very talented. What a true testament to your talent and musical abilities. Morris is so right that you are DOPE! His stories and experiences are just fascinating and so enjoyable to hear. Love to hear about his beginnings and that it didn’t all happen overnight… it took ten years… of hard work, time and practicing. Really Great job on this interview… Your Star is Really Shining! Can’t wait for part II. Thank You so much for this great interview! You Are The Best… Love You…Debbie☮️
Great interview. Prince was in a league of his own. I saw Morris Day about 10 yrs ago, had thousands at Taste of CO grooving, amazing 🎸🕺🍺🍿🍕Thanks Fil😊💫🎶🎼🌠
Good afternoon Fil , just saw the interview and been waiting all this week and my analysis: Did not disappoint!👍☕🍎 Beautiful, informative, funny at times and intriguing to speak to a gentleman who worked beside a genius Mr. Prince. All the behind the scenes and intricate details on how music is produce, constructed and all. Blessings to Mr. Morris for his candor and blessings to you Fil for being thoughtful and intelligent in asking the proper in-depth questions. Amazing indeed, this interview, thank you for making my Sunday, May 21st. Looking forward to part II and great live stream last night May 20th Saturday, as always. Take care Fil and Rock On Man!🤘🇬🇧🎸🎶
Just now catching part 1 and what a part 1 it is! Great interview and incredible storytelling from Mr. Hayes! Had me chuckling a few times. Glad to see he recognizes great talent when he see’s it. You are incredible, Fil. Cannot wait to see the rest you have for us.
That was so awesome when Morris complimented your playing - it is great. Loving the interview so far. Thanks Fil for bringing us an interesting interview. Morris looks like he is still 30.
I really enjoyed part 1 of this interview with Morris Hayes. It was interesting to learn how Morris became a member of the band and great to hear what it was like to work with Prince. It was nice of Morris to mention Fil regarding his channel. I am really looking forward to part 2!
Fil, great interview. Morris thanks for the innerview. I’ve seen a bunch of live shows in the past year and a half. Nobody throws down like Prince wood. I appreciated the VOG story. The kick drum sound to ? Of U being a basketball sample was inneresting. Looking forward to part 2 and to you covering more Prince guitar works.
Hey "BRO!" Fil, you're a "BRO" and one of the "CATS"! COOL!! WHAT AN HONOR! What a great story! THE SHOW MUST ALWAYS GO ON! I was in a troupe and the day before a performance the leader/owner laid into me about something in front of EVERYONE HUMILIATING ME. I think she really wanted me to do a solo performance coming up with my own song and directing. She was testing me to see if I'd show up for the gig the next day after the tirade. I did. THE SHOW MUST GO ON. CAN'T LET MY MATES DOWN. THERE WAS CHOREOGRAPHY, PAID PERFORMANCE. SAME WITH MORRIS. His was on a GRAND SCALE, PRINCE. And there were times that there was no power, BUT THE SHOW MUST GO ON! MORRIS IS SO DELIGHTFUL, "BRO". CAN'T WAIT FOR MORE!!! And he was there for "MORRIS DAY AND THE TIME!" I WAS NOT HALLUCINATING!!! 😂❤
Love Prince. But I kind of drifted away from his music after Under the Cherry Moon and didn't really explore others in the Minneapolis Sound. After his death I got back into his music and saw what I was missing. All to say I'm not real familiar with Mr. Morris's work, but it's cool that we are from the same area--I grew up about 50 miles south of where he was and very familiar with his early influences. Enjoyed the interview and looking forward to the second.
Very interesting! I was impressed by what I will describe as Morris's cool flexibility during performances. Nothing like major changes during sound check to make the already full memory banks (keyboard and human) go a bit overloaded! Also, I had to laugh when he recalled suggesting to Prince that a set list would be helpful! Great point, too about needing to able to play without electricity if need be. The early days of computers and software were already hard enough. Convincing the artist that he should not get too creative during performances when everything was all programed and set up had to be a challenge. You guys rock. Fil, this was really fun and I look forward to part 2.
Well done I really enjoyed the show. For me you letting the guy go and you not making a sound is so refreshing. Your timing and providing stimulus for his comments and reflection really good thank you both.
Part two brought me to part one. I'm still an atheist with regard to Prince's music (or a republican might be a more fitting metaphor) but I'm a true believer when it comes to deep insightfulness. I eagerly await part ten.
You know I'm all in for this video! Thanks for talking Prince, Fil. Can't get enough! It's a shame that much of what Prince was could only be told after his passing.
Great interview, excellent questions and Morris was engaging with his stories. You sir, deserve all the praises for your talent (talents!) and beautiful soul!
The Artist was an incredible „band - leader“ , he was their director, and beyond - he was able to give every band member his very own „moment“ to show up; and even after all years gone he showed up his respect to his former bands ( „ NPG - horn show you love „)
So, that's interesting. Prince wanted to use the electronics because he knew the fans wanted to hear something close to the album which isn't realistic to do live with many studio tracks. Besides not liking to perform live anymore, The Beatles found there was no way to faithfully play their later music live. It's an interesting question as to whether a fan would want to hear a stripped down version that is completely live or something that sounds close to the studio track with a lot of digital sound reinforcement.
Prince's live versions were nothing like the studio versions except for the needed samples and loops. That's why he never used a sequencer. btw Check out The Analogues if you wanna hear The Beatles live (almost) like the studio versions.
I'm sure you've had similar experiences - usually created by people who had no idea of the consequences of unscheduled changes. It's the ability to cope that counts - as you said , if it sounds good clean then it can still work even if the house of cards falls ! Credit to Morris that he rose to the occasion nearly all the time. Like being a parent - the best you can hope for is 'good enough' !
Prince was amazing - that he could go from something so overtly sexual as “Erotic City” to that ⚡️ICONIC⚡️ performance of “Motherless Child” just blows my mind. Also, Morris’ comments about Fil were spot on 🎯
I was curious about Morris Hayes and saw this interview. He was at Taj Farrant's show tonight and played a song with him. He came to one of his shows earlier to see him play and met up with him at NAMM and played Purple Rain with him at his House of Blues show and The Sky is Crying tonight. I thought it was interesting when he talked about Prince having to tune the guitar onstage but did it as part of his solo was great. What was interesting, tonight Taj's guitar went out of tune when he started playing I believe Electric Gypsy. He just tuned the guitar while he continued to play the song and didn't miss a beat. There were a few sour notes. I thought something was wrong but it was cleared up right away. I don't think a lot of people would have noticed if he hadn't mentioned it at the end of the song. I knew Morris played with Prince and a number of other musical greats. I just wanted to hear some of his stories. I love this interview, thank you! Who knew, two of the people you interviewed, a new artist and a veteran, this year would meet, become friends and perform together! Love your channel.
Merci beaucoup for this. This was a Geek talk but it wasn't boring. I was struck by the reliance on technology and how much it takes in energy requirements. I know several members of the Young Gods, and I've talked to them about their setup. They were an electronic band since the 1980s, and I didn't like them at the time. But they then went into a different style, and one of their best concerts I saw with with a String Quartet at the Francomanias. It was on a par with Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon. But today I'm worried about the energy crisis, and in fact have a video out about fossil fuels that came out today. I was amazed at the power needs of the Street Parade. How much electricity do you use for your studio? How much does Morris use? Will we move to a musical style that is more reasonable as we try to survive an energy crisis?
Much as its a bit disappointing to go to a live show and realise that a large quantity of the audio is prerecorded, or on tape, as Morris explains, its also an art in itself making it all happen, especially in a live environment with an artist who doesn't want to stick to a rigid set pattern every night. Thanks Fil, as always we agree with Morris, you da Top Cat!
Not sure he is saying it is largely prerecorded or taped, just that specific samples used in the sound are stored as keyboard parts. Think of it like a certain scream in a background vocal or a police siren or something that the artist cannot do at the same time as singing.
Morris’s comments about Fil’s ability confirms everything we’ve known and respected as his subscribers. Fil is DOPE!
Morris's face, that phrase, T-shirt, 'nuff said.

I like Morris, loads of talent and a good person. I saw Prince once in an interview, and he seemed like a good person too, not at all full of himself.
oops, forgot ... "Your Gear Sucks" 🤣
Thumbs up for Morris
Wow! Fil is the “dopest cat.” Morris has a fantastic history to share and it’s great that he’s sharing it with Fil.
More of Morris please! 🎶🎉🏆🎯💥👍💚😁 Fil, you knocked it outta the park on this interview. He's the real deal, old school. Props to you too being the badass guitarist that you are. Bravo!
I am halfway through part 1 Morris Hayes has nothing but praises to say about you Sir. way to go Fil. 😊👍
What a great idea you have to interview Morris hayes. Prince's fans are so happy !
What a great storyteller Morris is! And what a great interviewer Fil is to let Morris' storytelling shine! Two hardworking cool cats.

Hey Debra, my maiden name is Sams. Wonder if we share a family tree?
He is quite a storyteller. Just in this part 1 you’re getting good examples of Prince’s mindset about performing. Good questions Fil
Hi Mister Hayes 💜💜💜
Yes, Fil, you are DOPE! He is correct! Excellent interview. Letting people talk without interruption is the way to go. How great.
What a wonderful story Morris told! And this gave me a much bigger picture of what went on behind the scenes at a Prince concert. Looking forward to part 2!

It’s so interesting to hear all this information! I saw Prince in 1986 the first time he played in the U.k at Wembley arena - he was bloody amazing!

Well deserved comments by another musician who just happened to work with Prince!😊
Well done I really enjoyed the show. For me you letting the guy go and you not making a sound is so refreshing. Your timing and providing stimulus for his comments and reflection really good thank you both.
Wow Fil, that was excellent! Both of you were spot on! Looking forward to Part 2!
My favorite Prince era was the Morris, Tommy, Sonny, and Michael NPG.
Meet Morris on cork at the jazz Festival last year. What a gentleman he is. 🎉
This was very interesting ... truly enjoyed it! Looking forward to the second part. Hoping you have a great week, Fil 💙
Technology has helped achieve what was uniquely created in the studio. Morris is fantastic!
Part two brought me to part one. I'm still an atheist with regard to Prince's music (or a republican might be a more fitting metaphor) but I'm a true believer when it comes to deep insightfulness. I eagerly await part ten.
Good interview Fil. Eager for the follow up. 🤘🏼

Fascinating stories. I need to know which songs had the basketball bouncing as kick drum!
Me and my friends were at that exact same Prince show at the Pine Bluff Convention Center in ‘82!
This was the guy that initially said Prince wasn’t in his top tier of guitar players.
Prince was amazing - that he could go from something so overtly sexual as “Erotic City” to that ⚡️ICONIC⚡️ performance of “Motherless Child” just blows my mind. Also, Morris’ comments about Fil were spot on 🎯

Hello from Arkansas ❤
Awesome 👍
@@thesolitaryadventurer Nah, its more than that, he was also talking about drum tracks
You might look into Jackie Venson. Young black woman blues guitarist. She was in my recommendations so I watched a few of her videos.
