What Is Visible Light Transmission / VLT?

  • When you read the term VLT you definitely don't think of anything automotive. If anything, it sounds more like a sandwich.
    VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission. It is a unit of measure that tells how much of the visible light spectrum goes through an object. In this case we are talking about window tint.
    Window tints come in a variety of different shades, which are displayed in percentages. Usually, you would pick a percentage, get your car tinted and go about your day. VLT is that percentage.
    When a window film says it's 50%. What it means is that the film only allows 50% of visible light to pass through, reducing the brightness on the back side of the film. The higher the number the more light that passes through, and the lower number the less light passes through, resulting in a darker look.
