I’ve never heard anyone else sing with such clarity and perfect diction, emotion and passion as John does. Doesn’t matter the song, the genre, what age he is his voice is gold and just a great performer and human being. The greatest and most versatile male vocalist of all time with seemingly unlimited vocal range, stage presence, agility, everything is perfect and John always puts everything into everything he does.

I love the way he turned it into a pure gospel song. Only the greatest of singers can be both technically wonderful, but then take it beyond lyrics to a sublime spiritual experience.

Beautiful words from you about John. Here’s something you might like … Glen Wheatley, John’s friend and manager who recently passed away, was interviewed ages back asking why he wanted to manage John, when the music “industry” had basically given John the flick … wouldn’t play his music on the radios. Glen said (paraphrasing) I watched John singing his absolute heart out in front of a small audience at a club and thought “he needs to be heard, people need to understand this man’s talent. John’s “break back” into the industry that had all but wiped him was Whispering Jack, the album that featured You’re the Voice. John never gives a flat performance … passion is at the heart of his singing. I’m struck by Glen’s comments anytime I see John in concert when they pan back and dim the lights so that all you see is John in the middle of the stage singing his heart out.

My Nan who passed away at 98 yo back in 1999 would never hear a bad word spoken about Johnny Farnham. She went to all the 60 and over club functions which he sang at regularly in the 1970's in and around Melbourne, My Mum used to say he oversang but my Nan would get a bit stroppy when she said that. It was quite funny to hear those two going at it when I was a teenager.

That was a hard time for John. He had a bad manager to begin with that made him sing old people’s songs and be called Johnny but he was starting to break out with his voice. His best friend Glenn became his manager and then his boss when he mortgaged his home and all he had because no one in Australia or America would give John a recording contract. Then no radio station would play his new album so Glenn brought FM radio to Australian. He changed our music. The other radio stations had to give up and play his music because we wouldn’t stop requesting it.
I think that was the Whispering Jack album and the last song added and the first song released was You’re The Voice. Glenn had great vision but John wasn’t hard to gamble on. There is an interview I saw not long ago, only made a few weeks ago from old interviews when we lost Glenn. Glenn used to drive John everywhere because he thought it was part of his job. They were both very sweet men. Glenn kept saying, we are number one, can you believe it? John didn’t answer so he looked at him and John was crying. That song meant so much to John and because Glenn believed he had talent that it was never left out of any concert. John sang it for himself and Glenn. Those two were very much alike, they didn’t live far apart, their wives were friends and their children grew up together. They were family and they were all our family. Many in Australia are grieving at the loss of Glenn to Covid complications. He was in hospital for almost 3 months and the week before he was finally getting better.
I do not think John will ever sing again unless it is a tribute to Glenn and I can’t see him getting through it.
Thank you for showing the world who John is. He is everything you see in public, he has always been himself.

Glenn, mortaged his house because he believed in John, and some years later John Gave Glenn $100.000 which would buy you a house and give you some change at the time....... because of a couple of reasons, Glenn was going to have to go bankrupt. They were brothers in their heart's. John was really pissed when the story leaked and only ever spoke about it once. Glenn was a good man and John is a good man ......2 strong hearts. Vale Glenn

It's a very hard and sad time for JF right now, having just lost his long time BF and manager Glenn Wheatley, a legend in his own right, due to complications from Covid. They were a team. John is said to be "devastated".
My heart goes out to both Glenn and John's families. Rest In Peace Glenn. 🌹

I love how you see the awesome man behind the awesome talent. You're right, Farsnsy is one of those people that is just nice to everyone and a genuine bloke. He's struggling now as Debra said below, after losing his best mate and manager recently. Such a grateful, honest soul, and very funny at times. 👌 I was 16 years old when this was recorded. He was mostly a variety performer at this stage having been a big deal 10 years earlier and considered a "has been" by many in the industry. Even when "You're the Voice" came out, radio stations didn't want to play it, but the public kept requesting more and more until they relented and embraced him once again. The rest, as they say, is history. 😊

I was 18 and a month. Johnnie Farnham eventually became John Farnham. A massive transformation from "Oh my mum loves him" to "how good is JF?" Young and old just adored him, he went from lovable to cool and that's not easy to do. His talent and personality captured a nation. Cheers Matt, so glad you discovered an Aussie legend. We have a multitude of world class artists and bands here, so it's nice to watch a yank discover them for the first time and continue the journey.

Don Lane was/is an American that hosted a variety show back then. He was also quite talented and once or twice on his show, performed 'You got trouble, right here in River City' from the Music Man and performed it very well. Brings back memories. I'm 74 yo and Australian. I think Don's real name was Isaac Isaacson.

Yes, I saw him on the Don Lane Show.... I was 21, I first fell for John back in the beginning, "Raindrops" was when I first had a crush on him.. I think I was 12 or 13 when I begged my Mum to take me to see him in the Brisbane "King George" square... an outdoor stage. I was smitten. I watched him from the beginning, and he was still performing and sounded just as good in his seventies... only stopped performing due to the COVID lock down. Then the news came, after losing his best mate and manager Glen Wheatley to Covid, his good friend (Libby) Oliver Newton John was then dying, her daughter told how the last call she took was from John, and when he heard he cried his eyes out. Then he was diagnosed mouth cancer, Jimmy Barnes, flew to Melbourne to be by his side. He underwent a 11+hour surgery, removing the tumor, part of his jawbone (they used a bit of rib bone to reform his jaw}. As his son said, "it was some kind of sick joke", the Voice got mouth cancer. Now12mths on, after a set back with a respiratory illness, we have just had the news... He is cancer free and already starting to sing around the house. Hopefully he will be with us for some time to come. A new documentary has just aired at the cinema "John Farnham - Finding the Voice" (and broke the box office), it's been aired twice on TV since with over the moon ratings. And yet again, over the past weeks, two of his albums are back up again in the Top 20. Due to the internet, he now has millions of followers all over the world. He is a Legend. He is "the VOICE", and we love him. No-one will ever be able to replace him to us.

I love the way you explain the feeling he gives, not easy to do. As a fellow Aussie what John brings outside of the incredible & obvious talent is a relatability that connects with everyone. He exudes what it is to be an Australian & i feel why we connect with other people, a strong sense of mateship & we never feel better than the next bloke. Keep up the good work Matt.

This was back in the days when John was being controlled by the music execs. John could belt out rock with the best of them but the powers that were said no, you have to be the clean-cut young man in a suit, singing pop. They ruined his career until he managed to dump them for his best friend and new manager, the late Glenn Wheatly. Glenn took him to the top, and he stayed there.

Thankyou for bringing John to the world. His talent in awe ispiring. Some of his earlier stuff from the 60's and early 70's showcases the absolute purity of his voice before the grit kicked in. He is blessed with a natural gift. Never had a singing lesson in his life. I only hope that he gets through this time of mourning for his great freind. With out Glenn by his side im not sure we will ever see him singing live again. But he is the KING of comebacks, so you never know.

If you give John Farnham a great song to sing, well he will sing it brilliantly.
This is a pivotal moment for John.
Look how effortless he makes it look.
But this is not an easy song to sing especially hitting those notes.
I guess it's just another performance to make great songwriters feel appreciated as no other singer could.
I love you John, you have enriched my life as no other singer could.
    Thankyou!

John is what you see is what you get. He never changed and if you spoke to him on the Street he would answer like he was your friend and with respect. He was raised by good parents, he honestly cares about people.
When I was a kid I had to be in Don Lanes Audience with a group I belonged to. I was 11 or 12 and just before we went in we were told we had to be 16, so look 16! I think I just looked confused. "Johnny" Farnham wasn't a very good singer. He got more brave with his voice around this time. The 1980 album called Uncovered had some hints of what was to become of John's now famous belting ability. His time with LRB really brought out the belt.....and the rest is history.
