What is so mesmerizing about this performance is that Angelina is practicing with a group of seasoned musicians. At10 years old, she is basically instructing the band and in turn getting respect from them! Mind blowing!
They are in "Øvingshotellet" in Oslo -"A hotel, not for sleeping but for rehearsing". 49 rehearsal spaces of various sizes and accoustics.
"Painting a portrait in oil" is an extended metaphor used as the heart of the song. He uses "all the colors of blue" on his stand. Blue= sad, the blues, pain, sorrow, burdens, etc. At the end of the song he turns the image around with, "I am the man." So, it is a self-portrait. Meditate on that for deeper meaning. That's what I love about the best songs, especially the old ones: They contain poetry. Angelina herself writes....as does her artist grandmother, the one who played all the old jazz/blues vinyls for her from infancy on. I have just listened several times to the SJH original of this song. I have always felt the pain of others, and it is so marvelous to witness this capacity in Angelina, and how she conveys that heart/spirit in the songs.... yes, an old soul.
I'm so glad you got to this one, Matt. Whenever will we see a 9-year-old jamming with a band on a very bluesy Screamin Jay Hawkins song? Never again, is my guess. And she picks all the songs she wants to sing. What child singer has such breadth of musical taste? This is a band she performed with on the other Hawkins piece, I Put a Spell on You. She has taste, talent, and kindness.
You can see her ability when she sings but behind the curtain you see the genius prodigy she is. And yes she is that pleasant. Note at the beginning she is called "the boss." It is an affectionate title these guys gave her. She is always pleasant and kind. A big reason why she is loved and respected. Good job, Matt. Just continue being yourself. We're fine with that. By the way, you want to see an example of what music is playing in her head look at I'm a fool to want you, sung acapella when was 8 on Norway's Got Talent. Flawless.

She still Boggles my mind after a year of listening to her. She was born brilliant. Some people have Thanksgiving every day.
You should check out Jay Hawkins original, Portrait of a Man. It is a masterpiece of old blues. She adapted it to Portrait of a child. What I love about this video is how it shows her professionalism at the age of 10, able to work collaboratively with professional studio musicians. These are the same musicians she worked with on I Put a Spell on You. Great reaction.

One of the judges at NGT 2014, after the first interpretation of her, had said to describe her, "you are the music", I still believe that this essential evaluation, best describes Angelina.💛 🧡 ❤️

This is a band in rehearsal. It doesn't matter that one of the musicians is a ten-year old girl. Angelina knows how she wants to sing and the band has to figure it out as well so it can all come together. I would love to see the finished song. As usual, great job! 😎

I loved it and enjoyed seeing her process and how she arrives at the gems she produces for us
To me, the main focus of this video is not on her vocal performance but on the way she handled herself by very politely asking the musicians if they shouldn’t raise the key, etc. This was just a rehearsal, not a final take, and it shows her ability, as a child of 9, to arrange a song. She does the same thing during rehearsals for NGT-also interesting to watch!
Matt, You are diving into deep water and it is so nice to see. There is so much more to her than the unique and soulful voice that grabs our attention right off the bat. As you can see and hear in this video she is all business and she has the respect of all the members of the band. And, when you consider she is at the advanced age of 10 years old at this rehearsal all we can do is shake our heads.
I wonder if she has been saving all the notes she makes. Some day all those words written on her wrinkly paper could become treasures.
Lastly, in regards to the shoe story, she was being interviewed in Norway when she was 12 years old (6 years after the incredible story took place) and near the end of the interview the host asked Angelina if she still thinks of that little girl to which Angelina replied, "I think of her everyday."..........Matt, have a great day!
These raw sessions just amaze me. She doesn't care about letting the public see her
in work stages concerning songs she intends to present, knowing it's all part of the
process that she's been doing for years and years.
I love this piece, this jam session. It confirms my opinion that she is at her best at Jazz and Blues,
and many people will give a lot to see her perform live. Its also shows that this style of music is timeless, similar to classical music, it simply makes you feel human when you listen to it. Angelina kills this one again, just remarkable.

It was uploaded in 2016 at 10 yo but she looks more like 9 yo and could have been recorded then and uploaded later. I agree Matt, I think she was saying that it was a little low for her voice on that part and when the next verse came around she just skipped that phrase. Being able to take in everything going on around her and still having the instincts to stay with this difficult song is something extraordinary. btw, that was her mom you saw with the long blond hair. There is a video of her at 8 years old with a full jazz band she has never worked with before having them start the song over at least 3 times until she was satisfied with how they performed. These are the same musicians that supported her in covering 'I Put a Sell On You' at 9yrs and 2mths old. So its most likely around the same time (March 2016).

The second time I've seen this clip and I've got much more appreciation for AJ and see why she is referred to as the "Boss" during rehearsal.

This video shows a handful of professional musicians working on a new song. The fact that one of them is just 10 years old is irrelevant to everyone in the room. It's also good to see Angelina effectively managing the rehearsal by suggesting changes to the arrangement through her leading questions. And everyone responds respectfully. Great insight into how Angelina works at her art.
At ca. 3.40 she was expecting a modulation (one note up), but the other musicians (not having the lyrics in front of them) didn't change key.. Nothing to do with an uncomfortable low key from the start... :-)
You were lucky to have picked a ‘remastered’ version that balanced her voice and brought it forward. Amazing recording. This young lady never fails to blow my mind.

This was not one of my favorite songs, but I think Chris Walker enhanced the video so we can see and hear Angelina way better.
Angelina was clearly in control of that room.
I believe Angelina is a very nice person and when it comes to her music, she will gently persuade others to her way of thinking to get the song they way she wants it.
Wish she would make a whole song of this.

What do I think? That the song is great and Angelina is doing it justice. And, as I always do with these wonder children, that I hope they`re not stressed too much before they grow up. That`s about it. I`ve watched countless performances of kids on talent shows - especially The Voice - and sometimes I wonder about how they achieve what they do.

I love these videos I appreciate her talent even more ,I mean how old is she here 11/12? I've seen this clip many times but this is much superior sound/picture etc. I assume this is a jamming/rehearsal session , I wonder what mum was thinking seeing her daughter giving instructions, to talented grown men ,they do seem to respect ANGELINA .EDIT SUBTITLES appreciated.
