Screaming Jay Hawkins died in 2000 at the age of 79. Angelina Jordan was born in 2006. "Painting a portrait in oil" is an extended metaphor used as the heart of the song. He uses "all the colors of blue" on his stand. Blue= sad, the blues, pain, sorrow, burdens, etc. At the end of the song he turns the image around with, "I am the man." So, it is a self-portrait. Meditate on that for deeper meaning. That's what I love about the best songs, especially the old ones: They contain poetry. Angelina herself writes....as does her artist grandmother, the one who played all the old jazz/blues vinyls for her from infancy on. I just listened several times to the SJH original of this song. I have always felt the pain of others, and it is so marvelous to witness this capacity in Angelina, and how she conveys that heart/spirit in the songs.... yes, an old soul.
This is an absolute gem. People will look back at this video performance in 30 years as Angelina will be the most famous singing artist that ever lived. This Angel just opened her wings…
This video shows me that from an early age, the genius of this beautiful human being is expressed not only in her superb ear and musical intelligence, but it is clear to me that in addition to exercising leadership, she knows exactly what she wants and where she wants to go. Nothing will stop her from pursuing her idea of perfection. Lucky for us.
Asia's face said it all during the performance. Judge Lisa on Norway's Got Talent got it right after Gloomy Sunday. Angelina IS music.
I believe that Angelina working with these highly professional musicians here -- composing her own version of this song and its delivery -- will someday be in the top 5 of her formative musical moments caught on video. It will be right up there with Gloomy Sunday on Norway's Got Talent, her B&W version of I Put a Spell on You, and Bohemian Rhapsody on AGT. And she was, what, around 9 years old when this was recorded?
Every serious AJ reactor should react to this technically superior version of the original video of an awe-inspiring jam/rehearsal session. I felt like I was there!
This video explains why musicians playing with AJ call her "The Boss." She's about 10 years old and singing with some very capable jazz musicians, but knows what she wants and leads the group as a consummate and respected professional. Not a kid in this video; she's a top-notch musician.
Her asking a question is her polite way of saying this is wrong. We need to change it. The band knows she knows.

Angelina feels the music and knows how to convey the emotion in it.
She actually modify the lyrics of the song.The original was "Portrait of a man" and she transformed is in "Portrait of a child". She is so mature in her relation with the musicians. She looks so sure of herself. I don't think many kids at 9 would be able to interact in such a way. I find this quite surprising.
The biggest take away in this practice session is that we saw how involved she is in the arrangements of the song at the very young age. Her musical IQ is impressive. She's not just a great vocal but also a director on how she wanted everything to sound.

She asks the questions as a way of giving direction. It's like my wife saying, "Don't you think you should take out the trash?". Meaning, "Take out the trash, now!" You know how that works. She's just being polite and respectful.
This girl is something special !
She's so knowledgeable. She's working. I've spent my time in studio's. They're working it out. She's a professional artist, at such a young age. I remember one artist said to us on the board "It's my ass on the stage at the front. We'll do it my way. If it doesn't work out, it's my fault." I do wish Grandma would take lessons on videography. I mean she's been at it for years and just makes me crazy with her pans and zooms.

I'm so happy you reacted to this enhanced audio version with English subtitles! The original is nice, but I couldn't help but wonder what she was saying to the other musicians. It kinda looks like her mother (the blonde sitting on the left) is wondering what effect these sad songs will have on her little girl. I like how Angelina noticed that ending on a low note didn't feel quite right, so she repeated that last line and ended on a noticeably higher, more heartfelt note. Wow - just wow!

This has to be one of my favourite music videos of Angelina, despite all of its imperfection (being recorded with phone maybe). It also shows what she can do in Jazz or should I say for Jazz ? Absolutely amazing performance, very inspiring, reviving these lost music gems. Her tone is out of this world, and you get completely drawn into this.

That's why they call her the " Boss". She does all her own arrangements. The same piano player and trumpet player from "I Put A Spell On You". The trumpet player was also the trumpet player on NGT when she sang"Summertime".

Great reaction. Grandma Mery hand held recording with Mom sitting in as well. The Norwegian had subtitles in English but it was cut off in your reaction. I found it interesting that she wanted to re-do the ending.. and did.
I can't be completely sure, but I don't believe Angelina is really asking questions at all. She is tactfully putting her requests in the form of questions. This promotes buy-in and is a very diplomatic and effective way to build your team. She is an intelligent young lady in more areas than just music.
As for her vocals, it appears that she almost always has more gas peddle (or even another gear).. rarely used but available when needed.

Listen to the sample track she did for a song by Baby Fuzz "I'm Still Holding Out" which was leaked because Angelina realized the last verse was referencing suicidal tendencies, she promised never to sing it again unless Baby Fuzz allowed her to modify that verse. He did not, but he loved her rendition and said he was not upset about the track being leaked.

She rewrote this song from portrait of a man to portrait of a child to fit herself, she is painting a portrait of herself, a child, with her music!

You not only get the story in her own words but she also reads from her diary about the meeting with the other child and how it made her feel. Its a beautiful story...please do it.
