You have to wonder. It's more than notes on a scale. And, there are only a few composers that truly embrace our heart and soul. I have a theory...these men and women are Angels on loan; God's way of letting us know, we are His beloved children and each note is a tap on our shoulder, with God saying, Be Loving And Good To One Another.
O Mensch! Gib Acht! Was spricht die tiefe Mitternacht? "Ich schlief, ich schlief, aus tiefem Traum bin ich erwacht: Die Welt ist tief, und tiefer als der Tag gedacht. Tief ist ihr Weh, Lust tiefer noch als Herzeleid. Weh spricht: Vergeh! Doch all' Lust will Ewigkeit, will tiefe, tiefe Ewigkeit!"
What is going on with the pseudo-jazz business in the woodwinds? Those are supposed to be bird calls (if we choose not to ignore Mahler's rescinding the programmatic aspects of his work), not some kind of "le jazz hot" ugliness. Yikes.
Bad performance by orchestra, bad conductor, BUT what a magnificent performance by Waltraud Meier! Giant 3rd Symphony halts for focussing on needed reflecting thoughts. At this Lied (yes it's one of Mahler's greatest Lieder!) time stands still and music has to flow without any development, only to express together with singer these deep thoughts. Waltraut Meier's great performance knows about these requirements, too bad orchestra/conductor don't have same level.
Magnificent, full stop. !!! As always Ms. Meier left nothing to be desired, and the oboe left me speechless, surely, not the only one bereft of words.

J’ai pleuré encore une fois
La puissance du « tief « est incroyable
A stunning performance, in every way. And Waltraud Meier is certainly one of the greatest classical singers who has ever lived!
Merveille....Le temps s'arrête !

@mmarks4 yes, by her facial expressions she pointed up every important word at this philosophical poem telling us Nietzsche's thoughts about mankind
Meier at her best!

Agreed !
does anyone think Gorecki's Third contains an homage to this...?
To mention Gorecki in the same breath as Mahler is . . . Well, I guess this tells you that I do not think much of Gorecki...
Yes.

Different microtonation of the English horn.

She is amazing! Not so sure about the orchestra. Too slow for my taste.
Others ave said it here, but ... What's up with the oboe?
Waltraud Meier - dal vivo una vocalità dilettantesca poco professionale .
bellissima musica .
