I attended this gig along with Kirk Lightsey and we both took some great photos of this historic session.Dexter played Laura and Bud Johnson did a great Alone Together Arnett Cobb was also outstanding. Wish I could hear music like that now
These are the gentlemen who made me want to play the saxophone also Prez,Trane and Sonny and the list is endless the gift of their music makes me glad I have ears to hear. This music was what my mother played she loved Duke and Dizz and Bird so I came in the world swingin thanks ma.
Hmmmm sort of a train wreck...Dexter being arrogant taking a longer solo than he should have and playing Illinois solo which he knew its what illnois always started that solo with.. a lot of ego on that stage. .
The quote Dex played was a both compliment and humorous. The other players laughed. Also, his solo was not long at all. Your criticism of Dex and calling this amazing performance a train wreck demonstrates there is something seriously wrong with you.
Listen to the music more. Learn about the culture more. Maybe you might understand the jokes. It's okay. At this point these men have known each other for almost 30 years. This is not their first rodeo.
