Sometimes I wish the Walking Dead did what the book version of World War Z did. Part of the reason why the military really struggled there was because of using good tactics for the wrong war. They used anti-tank weaponry and digging foxholes, which was a horrid idea against the undead. Would have been cool to see that.

I think one of the most controversial things in zombie movies/shows is how they depict the military. Most people seem to think they are depicted as way too weak. But I actually think there is a case to be made that the military would fall in a situation like this. The military is dependent on the supply line. If the supply line is cut then their effectiveness is greatly reduced. If they don't have their ammunition and fuel and food and drinkable water they aren't going to be in a great position. And the military is also a job. They are incentivized by money. If you remove the need for money, how many people are going to hang around?

@@Laura-tv2dx I think the best way to explain the military failing is that it is not something they would be trained for, for obvious reasons. They would be trained for counter-terrorism, and to fight an intelligent enemy with tech like tanks and helicopters. They would be caught off guard by a large mass of flesh, shambling slowly while using their moans as a psychological weapon. Numerous soldiers would likely break and flee.

Honestly, I'm glad they don't, because as badly depicted as the military is in TWD, Max Brooks lacks a basic understanding of how guns work and aping him would be infinitely worse.
Never forget, midway through a losing war, the US military switches from a reliable, highly-modular, selective-fire rifle chambered in .223 Remington for a brand new, untested, semi-auto only rifle chambered in the notoriously anemic, unreliable, and dirty .22 long rifle. Every time he opens his mouth regarding firearms, it's to spout Fudd lore or Hollywood tactics, and it makes me cringe every time I think about how many people uncritically accept him as an expert.

I think TWD established very well that in the early phase of the zombie uprising, no one knew what was going on and no one knew what the dead would do or how it was spread... or that everyone was already infected and just waiting for a "real" death to reanimate. I'd wager that the soldiers had dead and wounded gathered in the hangar and were trying to figure out a plan when some of their former comrades began to rise and attack, and someone panicked and started executing ALL the wounded, someone else tried to intervene, and during arguments about who "needs" to get shot and who doesn't cohesion and order broke down among the spooked troops; a few began to panic, and soon it was all over.
As for the two Joes in the storage room, maybe they got out and hunkered in the supply room for a day or two but succumbed to other sickness or wounds.

    • @ItsFreshyFresh
      @ItsFreshyFresh 3 месяца назад

that is actually sounds more logical because it could be a soldier bitten by the walkers and the virus kicked in like Jenner said in Season 1 that everyone is infected and can´t do anything about it spreading because there were not any zombie movies before the dead started walking the earth. Its more of they don´t know what a zombie is and don´t know how to contain it. The virus is manufactured by French scientist in France and because of that man made biological weapons deadlier

The premise of TWD is good, the idea is excellent - if you enjoy the zombie apocalypse genre an we all seem to enjoy it.
The initial outbreak of the zombie horde is always fascinating, but so few shows tackle this phase - why?
Myriad reasons, but I feel impatience is one factor. FTWD almost gave us a fair explanation but it quickly sprinted away from the opening phase into some drawn out dull maritime silliness.
But, the poor writing, unimaginative plots, inconsistencies and reliance on dull predictable tropes really put paid to this show as something watchable.
Plenty of people stuck with it, I know some who did - I stopped watching around Season 5, it got especially stupid and boring. But plenty of people stuck with it, but they did not enjoy it and they complained more about it than I did.
I think there is still space for another zombie series, TWD did a lot of harm but some good also, I think a better show might come along, potentially an honest and faithful adaptation of 'WWZ' in episodic form.

I know camo isn't really a big thing but considering the fact most Soldier's in the walking dead only have UCP on (National guard from fear and some of the dead soldiers in the episode)
Which makes me think either the situation was so bad the US Was pulling out its retired uniforms to give to soldiers or these elements were a mixture of Army and national guard or possible other branches at the Fort as well.

Not the discussion at hand but this is one of the writers biggest sins in the plot of the walking dead. The premise is the group jas no food, no ammo, no meds, no equipment. This fort has all of that, the fact that the group leaves any supplies behind is one of the most unbelievable plots of the entire show. The walkers accidentally fire their guns proving that some abandoned military firearms were functional. They leave behind some MRE proving some of the food rations were protected enough from exposure to be edible. At this stage of the show no about of walkers would be deterring the group from collecting apparent supplies. They were alluding to the group basically at the brink of starving, and having run out of ammo months or years ago, and they left all that stuff behind because the base had some walkers. Mind blowing. All that aside great video analysis

My idea on this environmental storytelling scene is this.
The soldiers, after retreating from operation cobalt with helicopters or trucks, made a lot of noise. At first, nobody realized a horde was coming, and when it came, it was guns, tanks blazing. Many died with the few survivors locking themselves in the hangar, thankfully with many supplies. That room with the many corpses must have been their sleeping area, afterall there wouldn't be any form of beds to sleep on, it's a hangar. They could hear the dead outside so every night they locked themselves there, feeling safe ,as there knowledge was still that a bite or scratch turned you, with 2 guards guarding the supplies. Sadly one or more met their end one night, either as suicidal or injuries that glossed over. With them so close to each other one or a few were enough to cause chaos, friendly fire incidents, and bites. In the confusion with so many people dead, one by one, they would rise and bite, creating confusion on top of their first priority to find the breach and limited ammunation, slowly killing them all.The hangar was gone...
This left the 2 guards alone. Trapped from everywhere, especially with all that gunfire, they probably decided to end themselves probably overdose or cyanide pill, as i would expect having medical supplies too if food was there.
Thus ,the fort felt silent, with the horde drifting and the rest sleeping for the next victims.

  • @Alchemy_Works

i never understood why they did the entire pulley system, just wake them up, get them to chase you outside, get to a gate, lead them out, close the gate and double back to the back of the base by cutting a hole in the fence and patching the hole up like when they took the prison making the walkers just roam around the back of the base giving them the time to look for what they need without needing this mission impossible crap or just knife them one by one silently, the situation they got themselves in just makes no sense to me from the point of view of a group of hardened survivors
what they did just seems like such a high risk low reward situation for the sake of a intense scene if anything what i described would be intensere cause of the chase element and would yield a far higher reward

This theory is good. I was thinking starvation for the 2 soldiers since no injuries are visible but with the stack of food in that room, that wouldn’t make sense so maybe the injures were on their back or they “opted out” as Jenner would put it. There was definitely a fight in the hanger with all those bullet holes and shell casings. Maybe the damage on the outside was from someone trying to escape using a helicopter but maybe got bitten before hand and died or someone tried to blow it up with a rocket launcher. Overall, this is a good environmental story and the group definitely should have taken the supplies and not given up so easily 😭

In the Half Life universe the military was doing a great job but they were being attacked by all sides by an seemingly infinite enemy. There is no front line and a single head crab is all it takes to end a person. A single explosion from a teleport could disrupt an entire supply line. I think if an everyone is infected zombie virus happened in real life, it would play out near exactly like the 7 hour war. The military does well against the infected at first but with no way to replace loses fast enough they would eventually become overrun and collapse with only a few fortresses of civilization remaining. Like Rick Grimes though; I think there would be a U.S.M.C Corporal leading the way of some group of survivors, who is being observed by a man with a blue suit.

My theory is that slow moving corpses DIDN’T overrun the military bases. What did was maybe one or two soldiers that got bit or scratched and didn’t know (ie: in the heat of the moment they didn’t feel the bite or scratch happen) and thinking/hoping it wasn’t done by a walker they eventually passed and reanimated and attacked other vulnerable people in the area they were in.
My theory is that before they turn they got the usual fever symptoms and because it was early on in the apocalypse they didn’t know a bite or scratch was lethal so they were in a medical area with other patients, infected/turned the other patients.
Essentially a surprise zombie horde from within their own walls and not a zombie horde they saw coming from outside their gates.

Yes, this was a bit ridiculous, leaving so many supplies that they needed for Alexandria, but visually it was very cool and brought some true horror back to the walkers again. I feel that was needed somehow after the Whisperer arc where the horror was taken away from the walkers and put on this group of crazy people, wearing walker skins and living amonst them.

Da Story “As the outbreak began and cities burned either by the living fighting the dead or operation Cobalt many soldiers fled to the military bases they knew about and as they made it they held up for weeks maybe months, but as they began growing they ran into the CRM and at first they thought they were friendly, but back then the CRM didn’t trust them yet due to operation cobalt and what they did to civilians due to orders so the detachment sent there began opening fire causing many deaths on the ex military side and the rest would fall back into the hangers one of them being blown up before they ran out of rockets and the rest were fortified after the shock so what the CRM did was kill a few of them when they were sleeping and due to the disgust they had against the military for what they did they did just kill them they waited until the dead reanimated so the soldiers last moments would be filled with horror and fear. They would also lock the doors and as the horde of walkers killed everyone three soldiers escaped two of them making it to the storage room, but as a few soldiers and walks came close the third one locked the door to keep them safe (could possibly be brother idk) and as they were stuck in the storage room they were left there for years at one point giving up and killing themselves. Now for the reason the supply’s were there if it was at the start of the apocalypse I doubt the CRM would need the supply’s then or just didn’t care due to them being blinded by disgust for the soldiers who know but hey that’s just a theory a walking dead theory thanks for reading.
Not realistic at all but I don’t care it’s fun

Could've very well been CRM back in its early days. I'd like to think that during the firefight, CRM forces didn't want to deal with a prolonged siege, so they could've easily tossed some gas canisters in there and ended it relatively quickly. Not really caring one way or another about reanimation since they were locked up tight.

One thing i find interesting to see is others also noticing the "odd" use of the old woodland on these particular soldiers, especially since they are all kitted the same with no mixed patterns that i noticed. There was something about this season, compared to the rest of the franchise, that depicted soldier walkers wearing woodland uniforms and gear instead of ucp or the other styles that where made standard by 2010. I remember a scene later with Daryl running into an undead soldier wearing the woodland gear while out by himself in the day, and taking some supplies from it's pouches.

I'll pretty much forgive TWD anything, as I absolutely bloody love the TV series, but this part really got me. Why, why, WHY, did nobody, lower themselves into this base quietly and spend 15 minutes "knife slotting walker heads" in a logical fashion, to clear that entire area, while the stinky, rotten barstards were all "asleep" !!!???? It was so obviously the easiest way to literally take over the base, then rummage through what was there in an orderly fashion. AR-15's, ammunition, rations/food and plenty of other stuff was there for the taking, with very little risk and the whole thing turned into a shit-show!

    Your theory involving disillusioned personnel is good and gave me cause to found my own theory;
What's one of the many plot devices in a Zombie film that is great at causing irrational thinking, leading to a downfall? Getting bit and knowing full well what is the consequence for that.
Z Day: Law Enforcement across the US begin to cripple under the escalating number of 911 calls reporting "Civil Disorder" (Be that Infected attacking or Looters taking the opportunity to help themselves), Governors across the US, either of their own accord or at the recommendation of Police Officials and Civil Advisors, put out a call to the National Guard and the Military.
Thus, the personnel of Fort Connors is mobilised; at first, it looks like they're winning but more Civilians and First Responders are falling and turning meaning the order is given to fall back to the Fort. Several say "No, sir, f**k you, sir!" and go AWOL but those who either have no family living (or at least in the immediate area outside the base) or those who have resorted to the mindset of "I have a duty to perform and I will do it in the name of America!" obey and fall back to the base.
During the stand-off or the retreat, one Soldier, let's call him Private Kowalski, gets accidentally bit; immediately, young Kowalski begins to panic because we're either at the stage where it's been officially ordered anyone recently bit is to be terminated, NO exceptions, or it is just a rumour circulating the Rank and File. Desperately, Kowalski covers his wound and either passes it off as a cut or says nothing at all.
Eventually, the order is given to hold up in the hangar and everyone does so; during this, Kowalski starts feeling hot and can't stop shaking, he's coughing violently and is that blood in his mucus? He slinks away into a corner and, in all the hubbub of Officers desperately wondering what to do because they either haven't received orders from Washington or the signal is too patchy for them to coherently understand them, NCOs trying to keep up morale by barking out orders such as "CHECK THE BARRICADES, EVEN IF YOU JUST CHECKED THEM!" and Privates yelling at each other to shut up so they can hear the static riddled reports from a AM/FM radio, turns into a Walker.
Later, another Soldier, who we'll call Corporal Addams, notices Kowalski is huddled in a corner, moaning slightly. He approaches the young Private and Hell breaks loose...
    Sorry for the long read....

I have two guesses. one is that they died from wounds. the other, which I find more interesting, is that they ran out of water and died of dehydration while being locked in the building, because you need water for the mre and you'd die faster with no water than with no food. the damage to the building was probably caused by time and weather, because it was on a corner and didn't compromise the structure at all, and we've seen what weather did to places like the museum when it stopped being maintained. the padlock was probably the idea of one of the last soldiers still conscious, who saw their inevitable death and locked themselves to leave supplies for anyone who decided to loot it, since it would be near impossible to open it from the other side of the door without making noise and hearing the walkers on the other side before having it open (unless they shot the hinges but that's dumb to do)

I think this interpretation is almost perfect. But one part that you maybe missed was the chunk missing from the hanger in the very tired torture of the video. I don’t think a tank would have shot that since the tank shown is a m1a1 Abram’s. These tanks shoot large metal sharp rods that are suppose to go through tanks. Sure there is high explosive rounds but I think maybe that would have done significantly more damage to the building. Either than that I think your spot on, great video Ty!

One of the issues I have with this is they had to leave some supplies behind as they couldn't carry it all. If the food rations were left untouched like that, it's rational to assume that the base's armory and other supplies would be left untouched to some extent. Seems like a waste to just leave with what you could get and not come back.

Due to the soldiers wearing the older M81 camouflage and the presence of a tank on base, it seems like Fort Connors was Army National Guard. With how long the hair of some of the troops are, it seems like they potentially survived months into the apocalypse. Maybe the supply area was locked off to force rationing under the orders of some high ranked officer and the hanger was just a general gathering area. Perhaps after coming back from a mission, some guardsmen came back unknowing they were bitten, died in their sleep, and came back, catching their comrades off guard. Maybe the two supply guards simply got shot through the walls?

They could have sorted the horde by making a chokepoint in the hallway, but I don't think its that far fetched to believe they could have left such place in a hurry without trying more, I think they were panicked and considering the sensitivity of the situation including the starvation, the whisperers, there was probably low morale, low motivation to risk your life, and low energy.

At 6:33 at the top of the screen, just to the left of the flag and right of the door is a stack of climbable crates.
Why no soldier thought to use that, or any of the other numerous tall objects, as a defensive point and shoot/bayonet any of the walkers seems a little silly.
In basic we got taught to use everything to our advantage, so I know someone would attempt that.
If I had to guess what happened, the group locked themselves in, in an effort to prevent the dead from getting in.
At some point a fight broke out, likely between two factions over what to do. With tensions high, morale low, and weapons at hands a firefight quickly broke out.
We see there are bullet holes in the walls, but don’t see how the two quartermasters died. Perhaps stray fire killed them.
Anyways the firefight between soldiers would explain why no one went for higher ground. Perhaps after tensions settled the dead soldiers came back to life and massacred the rest, hence why we see cold bodies and mutilated ones.
Frankly the lock on the door is a big WTF. Why lock themselves in? It would have made much more sense if it was on the other side of the door.

For why they’re so many soldiers in the hanger I think they likely retreated into the hanger after the fences were overrun, some likely had been bitten and turned causing chaos where now the dead in identical uniforms as the living began fighting like described in the video.

I think there were some civilians in the hanger, as I think what happened is the base was overrun early on, the military bombed it in an attempt to destroy the horde. Survivors sought refuge in the hanger only to realize some of their number had been bitten and accelerated turning. The door has already been padlocked by a security detail before hand hence the door lock. The soldiers simply did not have time to try and break it

The M81 was retired in 2005 and it would make sense that the base held on for so long that they had the start handing out older uniforms to replace the ones being damaged or they where airforce personnel which would have still been using it at that time. And that it could also be that they where using the hanger as a makeshift barracks and someone died in there sleep and turned while everyone was sleeping and the two in the back where supposed to be the watch that night and where instead in the back. And the lock some one put on it when they where fighting back to make sure that none got out if they failed to contain it.

I can’t wait for Humbug's Gulch, Greenville facility, ones who live ep4. I always thought. This one is pretty easy. There was some sort of conflict within. Feels like a plan ambush. That went completely wrong. Double cross from somebody. Who didn’t like the way things were run. It seems more than likely. Some of the soldiers weren’t comfortable. With not doing everything they could to help the people on the outside. If I had to guess. Based on what we see. But some of the other soldiers were more comfortable. With looking out for themselves. Realistically, yes, you could use nerve gas or thermobaric bombs to great effect. Unfortunately the Wildfire Virus is anything but realistic so the Walkers would just ignore it I guess?

Thinking about fear the walking dead, I think some soldiers wanted to abandon their post and go home to their family's. The CO had the doors locked and ordered them to stay..they still had a job. A fight broke out and the shooting started. All died and this was right in the beginning of the outbreak.
But your versions are much better.

What I didn't get about that scene, is that they could have systematically and stealthily go around and kill all the walkers in the base, then they could have easily collected all the supplies they would have needed

Stabbing to a walker skull do make a sound. Even it is extremely quiet, the hanger is so silent that it could well be a massive echo in the hanger. Loud enough to alert the sleeping walkers or any disturbance that makes them growl or moan like Daryl blood drop did and cause a chain reaction.

I think the writers thought this would be cool. To many questions in this one: how did zombies knock out a tank, why did so many soldiers have long hair, why are the doors lock on the inside, why not go back for the supplies. After I watched episode, I really tried to figure this out, but I think it's a mystery box.

I figured someone was bit outside the hanger and ran inside and locked himself in with everyone else.

I’m guessing they slept in the hangar and the door was locked because of food rationing.
No matter how plenty the food, during crisis there will always be rationed.
The door would’ve been locked on the inside rather than the “supply side” because else, these 2 guard could just lock all the other guys up and leave with all the supplies.
Probably a officer inside of the hangar was carrying the key, and would rotate guys guarding the supplyroom.
Something went wrong inside the hangar tho, someone reanimated and chaos ensued.
No idea what happened to the guards tho but they did not die in a “comfortable pose”.

MRE's go bad after five years at optimal temperature, which could be why they only found a few too take with them.

Kinda weird that walkers go dormant from lack of food when they can’t even digest food in the first place. They’re organs don’t work.

Everything about walkers doesn’t really make sense tbh, they shouldn’t be able to make sound without functioning lungs either but they do

The thing is the military did not how to fight the reanimated dead. They would sent squads in a building that they knew had dead in them. It was like wasting lives for nothing.

the soldiers apparently had everything they needed to survive the end of the old world, except the most important - luck. whatever happened, it ended quickly and bloody. (as for the flaws in the script of the last two seasons, let's not forget that they were already preparing to end the show.. with all the consequences of that haste.) 😊
