Protesters continue calls for McMaster to divest from certain Israeli organizations

- An organization that represents Jewish communities on university campuses in the province says the encampment protests are intimidating for Jewish students. But an encampment in solidarity with Palestinian human rights at McMaster University says everything is peaceful.
The protesters are calling on the university to divest from any Israeli organizations with ties to the war in Gaza. The encampment is currently in its sixth day. There are around 150 people in the encampment and they tell CHCH News that it has expanded.
The protesters say they are expecting more people to come out and join their cause. This is just one of many other similar protests happening across the country and in the U.S.
While the protesters maintain that their protest is peaceful there is concern that’s not the case.
Jay Solomon from Hillel Ontario said, “The overwhelming majority of Jewish Canadians have strong ties to their ancestral homelands, and when you have these occupations of campus that are directly targeting that, directly threatening that, that’s intimidating, that’s harassing.”
Meanwhile, in response to this, a representative of the protest at McMaster who did not want to provide their name says the encampment welcomes everyone and says their cause is not a religious issue.
“We have Jewish people in this camp. In fact, today, at 7 o’clock, we’re holding a Shabbat for the Jewish people in the camp. It’s not a matter of religion, right, we have religious people we have a very diverse camp.”
Hillel Ontario could not comment on any specific incidents of harassment or intimidation citing privacy but says they have been hearing from Jewish students at McMaster specifically.
“From students’ parents and community members, who are deeply concerned by the imagery that the occupation that’s happening at McMaster is showing, there have been calls for intifada, and resistance. Those are violent manifestation of real world conflicts.”
Hamilton police tell CHCH News it is aware of the protest but has not been called in by the university to assist.
Meanwhile, the protesters say their purpose is not to intimidate or harass. They have been calling on the university to accept demands. “Specifically we would want McMaster to end the co-op exchange program.”
They point specifically to aerospace and defense company L3Harris which according to McMaster’s website engineering students have co-oped at. They allege L3Harris has some connection to Israeli weapons.
They are also calling on the school to disconnect from educational institutions in Israel.
According to a 2014 article on McMaster’s website, it signed a memorandum of understanding with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Israel Institute of Technology.
“I think it would send a great message as an academic institution we want to make sure we teach our students that this is going to go down in the history books, and we want to be on the right side of history.”
CHCH News reached out to the university for comment on Friday but has yet to respond. In previous statements, the university has said it is open to dialogue.
CHCH News also reached out to McMaster’s security team about if there have been any reported harassment, we have not heard back from them either.
The group says they are not going to leave until their demands are met.
McMaster is a joke.

Based on the definition, they're typically meant to align with the school's "mission and values." In the case of supporting a regime like Israel that is using that money to oppress a population while they slowly annex lands that are rightfully yours, every school should divest. And that's not really an opinion.
Unless a school is okay with blatant violations of international and humanitarian law, I can't see why they would continue to have either relationships or investments connected with the state of Israel.

Funny how I watched a show which explained the number of University/College students in Canada compared to the number of protesters and it is less then 2%... so who is making these "tiny" protest a big deal giving people what they want to see, to complain about or like, if it isn't the media?? Yes people this is what being subject to not having your own informed opinion but one given you by the media, trying to make money off you!! I worked in media, was actually taught in school how to make things a "Big Deal" because the media is not in this to inform you really, they are in this to make "money".
100% I was noticing that the other day. It's sure is suspicious why the protests are getting so much coverage compared to other protests the countries been having.
If these palestinians were so concerned about where the money goes, why did they enroll in a school that sends their money where they dont want it sent? seems a bit late to act outraged
Isn't this an occupation? Don't these people not like this?
Yes, the irony. Next they’re going to October 7th and then cry victim when there is consequences
I think that the administration should really listen to students because they know everything about the economy, Universities and Colleges and what it takes to make it work for all students-except Jews, of course. I think maybe what should happen is that these protesters should get kicked out and then maybe the universities colleges or whatever this is can go back to teaching which is what they’re supposed to be doing and along with that teach some bloody history so that they know what they’re talking about.
Deport!

Send in the horses!!!
They should dismantle the tents and allow others to use what is supposed to be a shared space. They can protest with pickets or by holding conferences with journalists. At the same time, the interview with the Hillel representative who alluded to "violent manifestations" protests, is not very persuasive. He cannot point to anyone being denied access to a building or service, being harassed on campus or being assaulted by this group.
In Montreal, there is a similar, larger encampment (which I think should also be dismantled) but there hasn't been a single incident of violence. Even though I don't agree with the demands of these protestors, we can't say it is for nothing. Minister Joly announced yesterday that Canada would recognize a Palestinian state, provided with was not governed by Hamas. It has also put pressure on Biden to not ship lethal weapons to the IDF, for an attack on an area inhabited by over 1M refugees.
Yes there have been attacks, a Jewish student was attacked for counter protesting but hey I'm sure just because MSM doesn't show the vitriol, the Jew hate speech, then it's not happening, right?
Try setting a camp.up as white Christian condemning muslim Nigeria for murdering Christians, saying death to Muslims, etc, let's see how long that shite is defended as free speech
Stop lying
Calgary police solved their problem, grow a spine!
As a Jewish person I fully support the students!
Why haven't the police stepped in and put an end to this? A college campus is not the place to protest a war going on halfway across the world that we are not involved in. And if it's about the college's "investments", what right do these people have to dictate what a person or organization can and cannot invest in. This is more of an extortion then a protest.
Also, this is another reason why we have to re-examine our immigration policies. When we bring in so many people from a war torn region of the world, its only inevitable that their conflict would follow them here.
People keep saying immigrants, but 90% of the crowds are yt women appropriating like lindsay lohan.

This 'encampment' is an obvious violation of law and of all students' right to the peaceful enjoyment of the campus, and does nothing but contribute to mayhem on campus. Sickening to observe from afar.
Agreed. The comparison with University of Guelph's handling of things is shocking. They utilized preventative measures drawing on university policies* (*autocorrect made it politics*), which has worked very well to prevent escalation of radicalization/extremism and divisiness.
And investing in and abetting a warmonger colonizer is not a violation of the law? You should be ashamed for living by such a double standard and lack of empathy despite having a degree.
@@SAT1337 I don't recall Israel invading Gaza on October 7th. Do I disagree with some of their war strategies and of their current government, yes. Do I agree with collective punishment against private businesses and companies in Israel just because of the nationality of its owners? Nope. They're a Canadian ally and as Canadians we should be against all forms of prejudice.
Colombia University clearly stated to students that they would not be divesting at this time. Divesting, which I doubt is even possible considering how index funds and ETFs work, would have zero impact on the current reality of the IDF at war in Rafah (yes it is a war, please listen to the audio recording of an Israeli phoning with an urgent warning to try to save lives with a Gazan stating they're okay with their family dy!ng on the channel: Mahyar Tousi TV uploaded within the past 3 days). IDF are still being killed in Gaza and Gazan militants & Hezbollah are still shooting at Israel daily.
If you own a cellphone then you've more than likely supported Israeli companies. If Israel didn't have the iron dome then maybe you'd have a different opinion.
@@SAT1337 The majority of Israelis are Mizrahi but guess what, even Ashkenazis have genetic lineage to the Levant. Only 5% of Canadians put themselves as indigenous on the census. Israeli Jews are indigenous to the Levant through language, religion, archeology (cultural heritage) and for the vast majority genetic lineage too. Also, 21% of Israel's population are Muslim, Bedouins and Druze.
@@SAT1337 empathy should not be one-sided in this conflict which predates our lifetimes and isn't ending anytime soon. How does that make them pro-Hamas? Is Israel not keeping a bunch of Palestinians in administrative detention in their prisons? And just so we're clear. Just so we can all stop acting lsrael is some innocent party in all of this. Israel has participated in a decades long occupation of Palestinians lands while they've stripped them of their rights, violated their humanity and slowly stole their lands.
It just has nothing to do with Hamas.
And, Netanyahu has had plenty of opportunities to get the hostages back. He keeps saying that he's prosecuting this war to get them back. I don't buy it. So far, he's gotten 3 back and killed maybe 30 or more in the process. During the one ceasefire that we had, he got back over 100.
That's why no one is talking about the hostages. What's the point. It doesn't seem like the government there is very interested in getting them back.
This is just speculation, but I would like to point out that it would be reasonable to suggest that Netanyahu is using the premise of "Getting the hostages back," as a means to sell this war to his people. That is just speculation, though.
