Hey Kindle Fans! Just an update for you. I manually updated my Kindle 1 to 5.17.2, which is the latest software update as of 12/10/2024. Now my Gen 1 Kindle works exactly the same as the New Kindle. So...for $110 dollars more you can get a white bezel and a pen with a rubber-esc eraser! Not sure why Amazon thought this would go well. Buy the Gen 1 or wait and hope Gen 3 has real upgrades!
You may have covered this but is the writing experience different? Does the new scribe feel more like writing on paper? This will be the deciding factor in which one I purchase. Thanks!
@@onemanbookclub How about the speed? In this video you mentioned that the new Scribe has faster page turns. Any changes to the speed on the old Scribe after updating the firmware?
For anyone that doesn't know, there are books for game playing and crosswords, daily planners, journals etc. for the Scribe and I love them. It is so nice to do puzzles and plan my day.
Also.. the original Scribe received all the new features. You probably figured that out by now. You can also change the size of your note within the canvas.
Everything you said wasn't on the old device is literally available via manual update (or you can wait for Amazon to push it to your device) and so anything you can do on the new Scribe can be done of the old one. I actually think the screen of the old looks a tad bit brighter and better than the new one. I do like the rubber eraser on the new pen but is it worth $80? I think not.
My Scribe 1 hasn't been updated yet. I'll need to wait and see how it handles the new software. I disagree on the brightness. I'm looking at them side by side as I wrote, and I'm not seeing that at all.
To manually install a software update on a Kindle Scribe, you can: Go to the Amazon firmware page and download the update file Connect your Kindle to your computer using the charging cable Drag and drop the downloaded file onto the "Kindle" drive Eject the Kindle to disconnect it from your computer On your Kindle, tap the Menu icon, then Settings Tap the Menu icon again, then Update Your Kindle Tap OK to perform the update After the update is complete, your Kindle will automatically restart
This was a great review. Because of it I'm going to be buying the new scribe. However when you were showing the features of the scribe the video went blurry and when you were done it was clear. That was kind of annoying. It made it seemas though there was something being hidden. Are you able to fix it? It would make for a better watching experience. Thanks
Oh dear! Definitely not hiding anything. I suspect I probably had autofocus turn in and it was focusing on the wrong things at the wrong times! I'm so sorry. I can't fix it here, but I'll make sure it doesn't happen again. And if you are going to buy, it would be awesome if you used my affiliate links in the video description when you purchase...I'll earn a small commission that helps me fund my hobby. Thank you!
I initially owned a 2022 Kindle Scribe that had a wonderful mesh-like texture - the screen surface had a distinct feel that made writing incredibly natural and satisfying. Even without the pen, just running my fingers across the screen, I could feel this subtle, fine mesh texture. I found myself constantly wanting to write and doodle on it during meetings because the tactile experience was so enjoyable. I've noticed the 2024 model has a distinctly different feel - more like a smooth, frisbee-like surface. Could you compare: 1. The writing resistance and overall feel of writing between your 2022 and 2024 Scribes; notice any differences? 2. The tactile sensation when simply running your fingers across both screens; does one feel mesh like and one feel more coated like a frisbee?
You know, I've looked into this...i honestly can't tell much of a difference. Supposedly Amazon felt like the Kindle 2 offered a more authentic, paper-like writing experience. If the difference is there, it's very subtle.
Thanks for the review! Unfortunately you spent close to $500 for basically a white border. There is literally no difference between this and 2022 Scribe other than the new white bordering. Amazon is really something else lol.
any difference in text quality or maybe that backlight something? Is the page gonna look 100% the same on both devices? Somebody mentioned that on smaller Kindle it was a tiny difference between old and new devices.
Except: In a year from now, the older scribe won't be getting the updates. Amazon is quality though! I still have my og paper-white from 20 years ago with 4 month battery change!
I would have loved to see more features added, for sure.. Aside from being slightly faster with page turns, I haven't noticed much operating difference. My Kindle 1 hasn't updated yet, although I understand others have. We'll see how it functions with the new software version. The value of the new Kindle is still tbd to me.
I love the Amazon Scribe cover. Something I’m wondering about, with the new eraser, is if it feels as precise. Because with the hard eraser, you can kind of peak under it to see what’s getting erased.
Hello! I got the old Scribe as I read your comment that is basically the same as the new one with the firmware update. I got the AI features with the update but I'm trying to write on a language book that has exercises and it still only creates a sticky note or a live canvas, doesn't allow me to write directly on the PDF as it would with the new one! I don't know if I'm missing something or there is some option I'm not seeing.
It's working for me on my old scribe. If your document is a pdf, you should be able to write directly on the document like a piece of paper. If you are writing on a Kindle ebook or a text file, it will create a text box in the place you write and reformat the text to flow around it. Of this isn't happening for you, it is different than what I am experiencing. What format is the file you are using?
Is the screen feel different on the new Scribe? I felt it at Best Buy and felt like it was different than the original Kindle which was more of a mesh film which was awesome to write on. I heard they coated the new Scribe and the text is not as sharp. Q1: How do the screen feel and write? Resistance? Q2: Is the new Scribe as clear for readability or blurry due to the matte film?
I'm used them next to each other, and i really don't feel a significant difference at all. The screen feels wonderful to write on, and the clarity is perfect. No blurriness at all.
Using a computer, download the file for your Kindle from Kindle E-Reader Software Updates. Turn on your Kindle. Connect your Kindle to your computer using the included charging cable. Drag and drop the downloaded file from your computer onto the "Kindle" drive. After the file has transferred successfully, eject the Kindle to disconnect your Kindle from your computer safely. Note: For Kindle Scribe, use the Disconnect option displayed on screen. Disconnect the charging cable from your Kindle and your computer. On your Kindle home screen, tap the Menu icon, and then tap Settings. Tap the Menu icon again, and then tap Update Your Kindle. Tap OK to perform the update. The message Your Kindle is Updating appears.
Actually it does look amazing, the green one with white bezel, looks very inviting, but of course if you don't see them side by side, it does not matter.
"I think this looks beautiful, I like it alot." I think the opposite. They should have made it entirely white. The highlight looks gross, like a giant bezel highlighter.
That's not a feature, strictly speaking. It's more a hack that works because of the way the magnetic case turns the Kindle on/off. The magnet in the pen does the same thing. You have to set the pen in just the right way to make it work, though, and it doesn't stick strong enough to hold the pen in place. Either way though, it WOULD be a great video hack to share! Thanks for the idea!
@@onemanbookclub In that case, the full hack is to get a scribe pen holder with an elastic band, then place it around the long black side. If you situate it just right, you can wiggle the pen to turn it off and on, or pull the pen for on and the pen in for off.
Well, atleast I got the cool color…. They were giving a 10% discount if you have the Amazon card. Was the cost worth it ummm I guess the color complements are cool 😭

Curious about how dark mode works in the 2024 release… Will the white border be extremely distracting in dark mode?
I tried it out last night to see. The white definitely pops, but i wouldn't call it distracting. It was a good experience.
