When I released the two part Evangelion episode back during the summer of 2022, I had intended for it to be one, massively long episode. However, due to production issues and real life commitments, I had to split the episode into two parts. I finally squared away some time to edit the two part series into the one, singular, focused episode I always wanted to make. Once again, thank you all.
Hey. Loved the video. It was worth the three hours. And I love the reviews. You should check out and probably review Space Pirate Captain Herlock: Endless Odyssey. You'll probably like it. But I'd give it a watch. And no, that's not a typo. They actually spelled Harlock's name that way for some reason.
I can tell you have grown a lot Bennett and lost a ton of weight (proud of you), I have been watching you for 9 years. Like a youtuber I follow a lot once said: "We grow a little everyday, whether it is our body or inside. We may not be the same person we were when we were kids".
1:19:54 "Moichandising, moichandising! Where the REAL money in anime is made! Evangelion, the T-shirt! Evangelion, the lunch box! Evangelion, the coloring book! Evangelion, the breakfast cereal! Evangelion, the flamethrower! The kids love this thing."
When it comes to NGE and The End of Evangelion, for some reason I think about that infamous quote from Joker from Batman: The Killing Joke: *"All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy. That's how far the world is from where I am. Just one bad day."* That's exactly what happened to Gendo when he lost Yui and that also happened to Shinji when he killed Kaworu. But after Kaworu's death and everything Shinji went through in The End of Evangelion (Asuka, Death of Misato, Third Impact etc. pp.), he still managed to overcome it and hadn't given into the madness. Something his father was not capable of.
Eh...i could never understand the appeal of Evangelion. I get that Shinji is a flawed character and all, but...I just can't, with him. Make the show about beer drinking teacher lady and Pen-Pen instead. I'd _watch_ a show about Pen-Pen. That sit-com hallucination episode of Evangelion? I'd watch that show.
the thing about jokers quote is it’s right and wrong because he made gordon go through a bad day and he didn’t become a murder. if i remember correctly the reason joker did what he did in the killing joke is to prove his point. think about the btas episode harley’s holiday where batman talks about his “bad day” as a sense of strength that he could and will push through
That's Neon Genesis Evangelion in a nutshell: ANYWHERE can be paradise as long as you have the will to live. God, am I gonna savour this like I did other Anime shows and films like the older Gundam shows and SDF Macross when I finally begin watching it.
I finally got around to watch this. I've been fan of your work nearly a decade now bennett and honestly, you're the only person i know that's gotten me really into anime, especially the older more adultoriented OVA's with the hilarious bonkers english dubs. I discovered those because of you, such as Mad Bull 34, Cyber City Oedo 808, Wicked City, Goldenboy, Kekko Kamen.. i've shown those to many of my friends and we've had a blast!! I'm really liking what anime abandon has become and it feels like, being 32 myself(hey man! We're still young!), it's matured alongside of me in such way that your videos are something i always reserve time for watching. Sure the format was a little back in the day as you said, but what has stayed consistent in your videos and that has kept me watching, is your effort, and passion about talking about anime. I'd love to see you visit some of the Anime's you previously reviewed with your more honest self, especially those i mentioned above :) ! Keep up the good work~ Will keep watching atleast another 32 years!
In that end, Bennett, I want to say this. As someone who has always struggled with low self-esteem and now regularly go to therapy, there is one thought that has cheered me up to no end. For me, my self-loathing and self-esteem has always been one of not feeling I am good enough and anything I do, someone else will do better. It is a painful thought, especially since it is always true. So, here is the thought, as obvious as it may seem. Being better than someone else is worth nothing, being better than yourself is worth everything. When standing up is a struggle, doing so is a victory, and no one can claim it isn't just because they did it as well. All personal victories are yours alone, but all personal struggles doesn't have to be yours alone.
Damn Sage i love your content. Ive been here for a long time and ive always looked forward to your next video. You ARE a legend. And you deserve to feel like one.
Thank you for editing these into a full movie! As both an Evangelion fan and long time subscriber (since TGWTG days), I really loved your work on these!
Thank you, as someone with similar self-loathing habits you have reminded me that people will still love and respect us. Even if we don't ourselves, but don't worry one day we will one day we will.
No, Ben, thank you! 11 years... 15 overall... That takes commitment, something I kinda lack. That last bit answers the question as to why I love watching your stuff. I am glad I saw this thing the whole way through. Thank you!
it's hard when we go through that "but I don't feel like a ___" stuff, when we encounter someone who seems to genuinely think we're doing a great job, sometimes the self-loathing eats enough of us that we not only assume that we are the worst people out there, but that also all everyone else just wants to do is to tell us how much we suck, there's that nagging feeling that we're trapped in a hole and even if we get out of it, there's an even bigger hole that we haven't yet realized we're in... but whatever you'll make of this Bennett, just know that you've done a monumental job with this Eva retrospective, and that is a fact
Bless you Bennett for your long detailed insightful monologues and long dramatic “But…” and “Well…..” pauses before delivering the kicker!! You ARE a bloody legend!!
Just got done going through your new vid and i was blessed enough to get this glad you were able to combine the 2 for this amazing dive into Otaku and evangelion
2:04:14 Oh god, I had to listen to that take like three times because it sounded like you said "2002 was a momentous year in Anno's life, not only did he bury his wife" and I thought "jesus christ, that went downhill quickly!" and realized finally you said MARRY his wife!
I watched Evangelion back when it came out. I was able to cobble together all the VHS tapes of the original series just in time for D&R an EoE. I got the DVD's shortly after, and finally got one of the Platinum Edition box sets, and the unedited box set for the finals. Stacked on the (not) series too. Anyways, not saying that to merch brag. Just to say that Eva has been in my life since the beginning. I've watched it at least once every year ever since, and every single time I see something else in it. Last view through, I really started to relate to the older characters. I always related to Shinji. Asuka came later. But the real heartbreaking realization day was when I realized I "got" Misato. Anyways, man. i get it how you've changed too. Eva ages as we age, and there's something for us every time we watch.
Another great and well-done and well-research video yet again Sage. I seriously loved your in-depth video series on Evangelion as a franchise and learning more about Anno as a creator/person. Please keep up the wonderful anime work!👍🏾
Cute how that ends. Cutting the name in half winds up with an entirely different affirming message than I think you'd intended... Or maybe you did. Neat either way.
1:16 the first time i saw the ending of EVA in the 90s i was pissed. it was season 8 GOT before that. i never felt so shafted by something i put so much time and money into. I was going to skip the remake movies of the past decade because my first though was whhhhhhhy. then i saw the first and liked where it was going. Just finished the last. you can feel Anno growing through the years with these and the series got a final ending. good!
I know this is gonna get buried, but I just wanted to say thank you for the videos and work you do. Opening yourself up like you did this time and in the past, specially the weight lost video, I see myself and helps me reflect on my own life. Im not Sinji.
Yeah, just watched The show & EoE for the first time a couple of days ago. I’m very confused, disturbed, but impressed, and I definitely enjoyed it. It’s just a lot to take in. I knew surface level stuff about the franchise as a whole, but never any spoilers or stuff like that, so I got to go in completely blind and that was fun.
While your reasons for using the Netflix dub are sound, it does make the Thrice Upon a Time very jarring. The ADV and Amazon dubs have some cast differences, but most of the mains are the same. It's weird going back and forth between two different actors.
You know when it comes to “immoral media” and it’s supposed influence on bad behavior, If someone is letting a work of fiction influence them to that extent, says more about the person than the media doesn’t it? Also, I know that Evangelion is their most iconic show, but I honestly like Nadia better. Wonder if Sage will ever talk about that show in general…
29:58 I'm sorry Bennett, but this is bugging me since your original Eva review from way back when: Sihlah is NOT the proper pronunciation of the word Seele. The way you pronounced it first, "Sehle" (last "e" as in elephant), is the correct way (or at least closer to, taking the american accent into account). Trust me, I must know, I am german. Otherwise, love the video, great job, probably the best Eva video on this godforsaken platform.
It amazes me how many anime can justify creating teenage soilders. Like Darling in a Franxx this anime makes the excuse of only certain people can pilot giant robots. I don't understand why any military group would choose to use weapons only a selected group of people can pilot unless is a legendary weapon like Voltron.
Ah yes, let’s trust hormonal barely understand what their lives are gonna be teenagers with these highly dangerous military equipment. I’m sure nothing bad could go wrong.
I love the last 2 episodes. Its the logical conclusion, and satisfying foe the parts that the anime cared about, and be pretty clear not needing to decypher to overall get, probably the best you can get with the artsy direction. While being personal and still wild.
I always feel a sense of mystery and ease when thinking about Evangelion. It's of the only animated shows that deals with the liminal terror of age and interpersonal relationships and considering its themes has helped me to consider what I'm to do with my life. Hopefully, the other people who watch this will have a similar experience.
Come on. The blonde scientist chick (Ritsuko, I think is her name?) got it going ON. And Misato is on the bottom of the Kusanagi-Valentine-Katsuragi scale, which measures how you're handling life compared to a single, badass, purple-haired woman who lives in a dystopian future.
Hi Bennet. I've never really engaged with you through this media, although I have been sporadically watching your old and new material randomly for the last year and a half, and honestly there are A LOT of jokes that I miss (not US citizen or native speaker, so yeah) but I needed to address you here because you touched that series that OBSESSED me during all my teenage years. I watched it and rewatched it until the VHS player broke. I got the soundtrack from some dodgy anime place in a crappy convention, hell I knew the I am I Rei poems by heart. I was (am still) a Kaworu diehard fan and I hated Shinjinwith all my heart and soul... Because it was an uncomfortable reflection. When the new movies came out, I didn't get them. There's plenty of viewpoints we have alike on that and honestly, it made me cling to the original ending harder. I didn't watch the last movie, I haven't watched it because... I was so scared of seeing an end to my obsession, but also... Eva resonated so deeply within my core that I was scared what I would find, years later. If this series destroyed my self esteem and filled me with hope and despair so badly in my teens, what would it do to me in my thirties? The reason why I'm writing this is because you resonated with me. And I know I'm not near to know you or understand. To be honest, this whole video made me feel accompanied in my teenage angst, and reiterate the notion that I had that your opinion and views as an elderly Otaku are valid and important. Even if I can't understand the angry dubbing rants and inner studio jokes because here it got made by a different studio with a different language, and you suffered not because of lazy reading, but because every single main character was voiced by the lady who voiced Sailor Moon, I will continue watching your content, because I think there is depth, meaning and valuable information on what you do... Even if it's for a hobby I'm passionate about. But yeah, this whole nonsensic rant is because... I'm ready. Watching this long, detailed and hard pill of a video, not skipping anything and facing the spoilers and my own fear made me realize, I'm ready to watch thrice upon a time, and whatever that means for me, emotionally. I'm... Scared? Anxious? Not sure... But thank you, thank you so much for making this and helping me realize I have to do this. And I can now. And it's kinda stupid to think that I can have such strong feelings for an anime that started when I was like 17, and it's like 20 years later and I'm still hung up on this but... I know you understand this heavy weight and dreaded anticipation. I'm sorry, this is long and tiring. I'm not trying to pretend we know each other or anything like that. I rarely use RUclips as a way to engage with others. It's just that this whole video experience feels so familiar and it's bitter sweet and... It just gave me that push I needed. So thank you Bennet. I guess I owe you a beer. Cause adults, am I right? I probably should erase this.
The thing I learned from watching this is that we may be different in many ways but can relate to each other. A reminder that we’re all human. Happy 11th anniversary of Anime Abandoned!
I know how you feel. If everything you do is a failing, after years and years trying. You lose hope that things will change and get scared that time is running out. That you never will sucseed and you just give up. Thats why we escape hoping that the things we like will comfort us. When they don't then life becomes meaningless and the dark thoughts return.
@@adamwallace7353 you might think so but it’s very true. He backs up what he says with footage from the anime itself and personal experience. I too know exactly what RB meant when talking about narcissism. I too lived through the same kind of thing he did.
Would love to know who the two RUclipsrs were? Love your videos I suffer with anxiety and have trouble sleeping you help me feel relaxed they help me in bad times ❤
It sort of still does happen a young kid I think he was 14 at the time turned a scene out of "Into the spideverse' into a CGI Lego version and put it on his RUclips channel this caught the attention of one of the movies creators who hired him to do the Lego scene from the latest movie
Got to be honest, i still hate Evangelion mainly due to the fact that i kinda hate the characters. And i don't really care about the plot. Which oddly is the two things you kinda need for a good story. As in all honesty this story i never could find myself rooting for this kid. Just due to the nature of the entire story. Hard to sympathize with a whiny teenager when the world is ending. His daddy issues just dose not compare to the greater story line. And the worst part is, if he actually tried then maybe he could have gotten what he wanted. Without the need to have a character become a break a few laws she really shouldn't have. As sure she was going to die either way. But come on, you don't bribe a minor with that kind if action.
The last few minutes of this video made me cry in a very healing way. Thank you, sincerely, for making this autistic trans girl feel a little better about herself, and a little more hopeful about tomorrow
Yep, translation is literally the art of taking over not only the words but laso meaning from one language to another, and languages can say things very very different, pretty often to say the same, you need to change the words. Especially if you still want to sound good, let alone semi bring across humor.
Bear with me here, folks, this is a weird one. What if the entire Evangelion franchise, from the TV series and movies, to the Rebuilds, to that high schol sequence at the end of EoE, to the Eva-free high school battle series manga they made... aren't all really happening, but are different iterations of Shinji's fractured mental and emotional states trying to work through his trauma in a dark room? Each one is effectively another layer deep, and won't awaken to the full truth until the one at the end layer, all the way at the bottom of the cycle, finally wakes up post Impact and realizes his personal happiness in a healthy and positive way, thus, the cycle continues and anyone connected to the Evas never ages because they are all parts of Shinji's mind also? And the only reason they age SOME folks in the Rebuilds is because that layer of Shinji's mind needs some folka to be older in order to parse that lesson and deliver it?
It looks like I might not like the last Rebuild movie, sounds a little bit too Episodes 25 & 26 for me. Still, turns out the disc & dub copy's finally being released where I am next week, so I can see it myself.
Can we acknowledge the fact that Bennett pretty much said that while he could've technically downloaded/pirated the original series' hd collection he decided against the notion and actually buys his anime? Good on you, man.
Dumb, grifted me said this before, wiser me will say it again: Evangelion isn't a Deconstruction; it's a perfect example of the Mecha subgenre's flexibility.
16:39 Hang the f on... It cant be. This clip of the stock brokers has been used in the swiss news jingle. Hang on let me find it. PS; Never mind its not that clip. SF DRS - Tagesschau Intro 1992-2005 (beide Versionen)
Okay, look. I'm gonna need edibles if you're going to eat my entire night. I MIGHT be abrasive throughout, but i'll try not to be. But... did you really feel the need to do this? There're aren't enough old heads who would... alright fine. I'm eating the rest of my supply.
1:54:09 Something tells me that this would also be the reaction of a Crunchyroll Dubs bigwig if they ever get a notice from the IRS that they, and/or the company in question are being investigated for tax fraud. Because I don't see the inner circle of "The Company Formerly Known As Funimation" as being above committing such a crime. On a more serious note, I'm honestly surprised that Amanda Winn Lee (Rei Ayanami's first dub actor) hasn't been subjected to the same kind of harassment as Hideki Anno did with the OG anime's ending and "The End of Evangelion," considering all things she's said on Twitter; including but not limited to: 1. Saying that anyone who disagrees with her deserves to be sold into...... "physical intimacy slavery." 2. Said that a victim of...... "physical intimate assault" got what they deserved. 3. Doxxing someone before SSSniperwolf made it an issue. 4. Laughing at Ukrainian refugees who were feeling Russia's invasion of their country. 5. Expressing hope that World War 3 happens because it would prevent former U.S. president 45 from being reelected. 6. Outing her own son as gay without said son's permission. 7. Deleting any of her tweets that people take issue with so that she can deny having ever made such tweets in the first place.
29:48 Literally every one of these belong in the trash. Good god. When you're an older anime watcher, it's so hard seeing idiots who don't understand these reference points.
I like the 4 parter move series of this and than the original. Yes, it was still good....But the newer of the 4 parter movies' much better. Just saying.
I'm going to be thinking about this video's last 25 or so minutes til the day I die.
Thanks Sage, that's awesome of you to do :)
nice sage!!! keep up the good stuff!

Evangelion, the tapioca that's finger lickin' good!
And evangelion dolls with Shinji farther (worst charecter ever)
Shinji farther: get in the ava shinji
Evangelion the condom, create a 3rd impact on the bedroom 😏
Dang, a 3+ hour cut of a video, perfect for my day off!
When it comes to NGE and The End of Evangelion, for some reason I think about that infamous quote from Joker from Batman: The Killing Joke:

Beautiful and sincere piece. Thank you!
Oh yeah, you did say you were gonna merge the episodes together. Wicked cool. This is indeed a long one.
We love you man! Keep doing what you're doing...and Congratulations!!
😮Despite how much I enjoy your edits and visual choices, this is my work 'podcast' today.
Same.
I just break it down to part and watch at 1.75 speed
Wow, it's been almost 2 years since you made this. Time certainly does make fools out of us all.
did he delete the older two parter
In that end, Bennett, I want to say this. As someone who has always struggled with low self-esteem and now regularly go to therapy, there is one thought that has cheered me up to no end.

Beautiful work Sage. I feel like this is might be important in the discussion regarding anime culture. Your long form content is wonderful.
Everyone must experience fruity rebuild Kaworu
I’m a fan of case closed, an it literally being the Jimmy voice is hilarious
Dude wonderful video as always! I really enjoy your sense of humor and ability to convey the vast history and minute detail of this time.
Oh cool, I needed something... self-educating
This hits just the mark
That animation of Shinji in the last episode from the original tv series beginning with him being an egg is retrospectively hilarious.
Thank you!
Just saw this pop up. I'm so watching this after work today 👍😁

Excellent work Bennett. I can't wait for RUclips to take it down.
Enjoy it while you can.
Just got done going through your new vid and i was blessed enough to get this glad you were able to combine the 2 for this amazing dive into Otaku and evangelion
It's been a beautiful 11 year of Anime Abandon.
2:04:14

1:12:06 DECAPITATION!
Thank you for the introspection and insight at the end. I need to hear that
Good job Bennett

Ah yes, let’s trust hormonal barely understand what their lives are gonna be teenagers with these highly dangerous military equipment. I’m sure nothing bad could go wrong.
This Is one great Jorney, the talk anout Media, The impact of Neon gensis its characters and one man with a vision.
Hopefully, the other people who watch this will have a similar experience.
so glad I never got into the Asoka vs Rei waifu discourse. I was and still am a Misato stand
Omg wtf I wrote a freaking ESSAY. So sorry.
Rebuild 1 is definitely kinda boring as all hell but you can (not) deny how much the re-vamped Ramiel fight hits
Bennett should have called this video "Who/What is Hideaki Anno?"
only fitting to do a rebuild of your Eva episode
(Applauding) Congratulations!
Forgive me, I felt it only too appropriate.
2:53:53 why does that describe me so well...
I AM READY
The thing I learned from watching this is that we may be different in many ways but can relate to each other. A reminder that we’re all human.
Happy 11th anniversary of Anime Abandoned!
I know how you feel. If everything you do is a failing, after years and years trying. You lose hope that things will change and get scared that time is running out. That you never will sucseed and you just give up. Thats why we escape hoping that the things we like will comfort us. When they don't then life becomes meaningless and the dark thoughts return.
First Retroblasting, now Bennett idk if it's a good day to be an Eva fan or a bad thing. Im more in the middle.
Retroblasting's video was awful. Very reductive and condescending.
There is another video that debunks more of RetroBlasting's claims.
ruclips.net/video/6DtK1Bu6Klg/видео.html@@adamwallace7353
@@adamwallace7353 you might think so but it’s very true. He backs up what he says with footage from the anime itself and personal experience. I too know exactly what RB meant when talking about narcissism. I too lived through the same kind of thing he did.
I think it’s „first children“, plural, because Rei comes from a series of clones.
Oh yeah I grew up in the 1980s during the so-called satanic panic and let's say it was an interesting time to grow up in.
Which was a massive failure.
Looks like Gainax eventually filed for bankruptcy
I can so relate too! I used to play on my own but oretend to be characters from my fave shows.
You can (not) re-edit...
Jk, this is awesome.
Great video.
Splitting a 3-hour review into two parts was a good idea. This is a hard sell for those without excessive time to browse RUclips vids.
How the times have changed and how one feels
Review Monster the series??
It a good explain video, I am happy to watch.
Just engagin with the content here, Barnes.
Still annoyed by Sage’s mispronunciation of “Seele,” though. It’s pronounced “ZAY-luh,” dag nam it.
Love and Pop is just an animated film as shot by a camera. Same blocking. Editing. ETC.
I just watched the original videos last week 😅
Freude schöner Götterfunke Tochter des Elysium

16:39 Hang the f on... It cant be. This clip of the stock brokers has been used in the swiss news jingle. Hang on let me find it.

Young in Asia is Euthanasia? Lol 😂
ooooh shiiiiiiiiiittttt WOOOOOOOOO
Yesssssssss....
On a more serious note, I'm honestly surprised that Amanda Winn Lee (Rei Ayanami's first dub actor) hasn't been subjected to the same kind of harassment as Hideki Anno did with the OG anime's ending and "The End of Evangelion," considering all things she's said on Twitter; including but not limited to:
1. Saying that anyone who disagrees with her deserves to be sold into...... "physical intimacy slavery."
After all these years, Bennett still mispronounces "Seele".
No way!
29:48
Literally every one of these belong in the trash.
Good god.
When you're an older anime watcher, it's so hard seeing idiots who don't understand these reference points.
👍🏾👍🏾💯🔥🔥🔥
what happened gainax back in '97.
I like the 4 parter move series of this and than the original. Yes, it was still good....But the newer of the 4 parter movies' much better. Just saying.
I feel like just because the new dub is more faithful don't really think that's a good excuse. For the sub maybe
I think it didn’t needed to be redubbed.
@@dwainsimmons3447 It likely was redub because Netflix didn't want to pay for the ADV dub
@@dwainsimmons3447 I agree
also wasnt it not even that faithful? wasnt there a big hubbub over the kaworu scene translation?
