Just one of many “WAIT WHAT!!?” moments in this fascinating review(also yeah, Sage was right; the anime is in fact one of the worst anime I’ve ever seen as well)
8:47 Just adding this time-stamp here so I can revisit this moment anytime I need to laugh so hard I cry. This is up there with _"Baoh has a laser canon!"_
'If you wanna be Kurosawa so bad, just cosplay as him.' Given Kurosawa's INSANE dedication to detail in his works... I don't think any Kurosawa cosplay would be accurate without going whole hog and making the movies.
I found out what the context was: The baby is a psychic intelligent Stewie Griffin, and the birth... was NOT consensual, and it didn't require a penis, just teleported into the womb... and it's not his first time doing this... *hurl*
This was fantastic. I straight up cackled with glee from start to finish at everything from the gags to the outlandish information presented to my unprepared mind. 11/10. Ultimate takeaway, "It takes a certified lunatic."
Oh man, I haven’t gotten so many laughs from one video in ages. I love it. Never change. I remember seeing Heaven and Earth, but I don’t remember anything about Heaven and Earth. I also used to walk by Harmageddon all the time in the Anime section of a video rental store I used to work at way back in college. It was never rented. Killer Clowns from Outer Space got worn out and we had to buy two more copies. The DBZ movies would get rented daily. Escaflownaze was stolen at least twice. Harmageddon, never touched.
This story needs to be given the Tropic Thunder treatment. "harmageddon: the incredibly true story of the making of one of anime's most influential movies and the bat shit insanity surrounding it." You could even have Ken Watanabe play Mr. Kodakawa as he spirals into cocaine induced alien seances.
I myself am a pretty old otaku. I started hunting any anime I could get my hands, starting around 1990. And when it comes to early anime I thought I had seen it all. But honestly I have never ever herd of this one. Although I did have a wall scroll that had artwork of that robot from this. I had always wondered what it was from.
I'm old enough to still remember seeing "A Gulf & Western company" under the Paramount logo, I always wondered who they were: thanks to Sage, I now know.
Wait... the novelization of "The Day of the Jackal"? But "The Day of the Jackal" was based on a novel... So it's a novelization of a film adaptation of a novel? That's insane.
REX? OH MY GOD! I can not tell you that whole drop of Rex was the most wild for me. Mostly because you left out the part that Rex also had a manga one shot made by CLAMP.
This was definitely a formative work for me. The rental was a wild blockbuster ride in the 90’s. Back when cartoons and anime were intermixed in the isle and you never knew what you could find.
Never faded for me, I was also an epic videogame fan back in the day, when this was released as Bega's Battle, a laserdisc game. Seeing it in full length was just as satisfactory as Cliff Hanger, when I saw Miyazaki's "Castle of Cagliostro".
I clearly imagined Vega's response to "I am Luna, one of the psychic warriors of Earth!" to be "...Neat." after that long pause. And then again with "JO! YER A PSYCHIC WARRIOR!"
I wish the original manga is easily accessible, surely the story would make better sense that what the adaptations gave us. Hell, I wish all of Ishinomori Shotaro's works are easily available, he deserves to be known more globally
Thank god another fan. Like it’s really not that bad of an anime especially at the time it came out. I think it aired before Cyborg 009 and might be why I decided to watch that. Plus I love the art style.
The anime of Kikaider is likely darker than the Toku show it was inspired by, because it resembles the latter’s more ambitious manga counterpart rather closely.
You've been knocking it out of the park lately with these well-researched vids that go so far beyond the shitty anime. I love it. (And as someone currently in a serious LDR with an Italian, you're an inspiration that closing the gap IS possible!)
I loved this video from start to finish. I'd heard of Genma Wars (referring to the anime and not the manga) and the less-than-stellar reputation surrounding it, but I had no idea it came from such an insane point of origin. Everything from the odd, borderline nonsensical plot to the rich, crazy man determined to bring the film to life makes this the perfect subject for a video. You've really done your research, as always. Thanks for giving me something special to enjoy while I recover from the trauma of my last month at my job. Lastly, congratulations on getting married. Hopefully you won't need to perform CPR on your spouse any time soon
At least one company is banking on some segment of the population still being deeply nostalgic for Harmagedon. Sentinel is releasing a $300-$400 figure of Vega later this year.
Look up "Bega's Battle (Data East 1983) Attract Mode 60fps" It would never have existed without Harmagedon, imo its possibly the most epic attract mode in history.
I really loved how you criticized Haruki while also being fair to his contributions to the whole genre. Given how absurd of a guy he apparently is, it would be too easy to not give him any credit at all. Awesome stuff as usual
@Not Right In The Head you dont heard about anything that wasnt imported to burgerland at the time, that speaks more about your knowledge in this area than about how much this movie is well known. This guy always does deragatory reviews for the sake of it, abusing the fact that big part of his audience doesnt gives a shit about old anime in general.
The oldest known flush toilet dates back to stone age Britain, and indoor plumbing was common in ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. The eastern half of the Roman Empire didn't collapse until the 1400's, only a couple decades before Columbus set sail on the Santa Maria. The Renaissance, when Europe began rebuilding what it had in the Roman Empire, began in 1300, nearly two centuries before Columbus' voyage to America. So, yeah, we had indoor plumbing in a LOT of places when the Santa Maria set sail. Ships, of course, generally just used chamber pots or buckets. We didn't invented flushing toilets on ships until the 1800's (the Civil War-era Monitor had one), and they were generally very complicated due to issues involving water pressure and opening and closing valves in the right sequence; a German WW2 U-Boat sank because a sailor screwed up while flushing the toilet, and British submarines of the same era forbid sailors from using the toilets and instead forced them to hang their butts over the side and poop directly into the ocean while surfaced at night, because the system was so complicated it took an engineer to flush the toilet and not sink the submarine.
Amazing, very informative. Now I get why some big Kadokawa IPs are so poorly handled, despite having all the odds in their favour, it's because of egomaniacs like this guy calling the shots.
I remember two days of No sleep, flipping channels coming to IFC when they showed anime and this was on. All I remembered from it felt like a fever dream. Also Psychic cat! When I found out it hadn't been a dream I watched it again. I rather it had been a fever dream.
Oh, Final Fantasy Unlimited... I recently rewatched the series, and... it does not hold up. ESPECIALLY the ADV dub actors for Ai and Yu. I will however always have "The Soil Charge Triad to use on you has been decided!" stuck in my head. XD I love watching these Sage. So glad I found out about you years ago. I go back and rewatch your vids every now and then. I may not always agree with you, but I still like it.
Am I the only one who thinks that delivery of the line "when i get back i'm gonna beat that baby outta you" would be right at home in a Meat Canyon cartoon?
Mr. Sage? Have you ever considered a guest spot on a certain blue skeleton's series that talks about the behind the scenes stories of media both good and bad? Your ability of going into detail about the behind the scenes of some anime like this... Ooh... it is something! Also, it's only been a month since I last heard of that Yumi Adachi Dinosaur movie on Lupa's channel and now I hear YOU mention it? Man... I really gotta see that flick.
I’ve been a fan of Anime Abandon since 2013-2014 and I think this is one of the best episodes of the entire show. The material is perfect for AA, what with being an overlooked piece of old anime crap (complete with CPM dub) that happened to involve multiple big names in the retro anime industry, and Sage melds his newer style of video essay with the oldschool TGWTG-style humor perfectly. I also appreciate the callback to Project A-Ko at the beginning there; the decade-long question of “what the hell was that a parody of” has finally been answered. Thank you for all that you do!
Haruki Kadokawa being inspired/admiring Hitler and the Germans is insane until you realize the WW2 japanese dogma and the axis as a whole was filled with narcissistical sociopathy that led to Japan doing literally some of the most inhumane shit in history...and everytime evidence has come out about that period that forces Japan to make a public apology...theres always guys like Kadokawa and Shinzo Abe to claim Japan never needs to apologize for anything.
Shit, I’ll forgotten about this, though I know my Old ANIMERICA Magazines still have adds and old reviews of Anime from Yesteryear. I may need to get on the patreon and start requesting more obscure titles.

I “saw” this in the form of a laserdisc arcade game called Bega’s Battle years before I saw the source anime. Come to think if it, I still have the Harmageddon movie poster rolled up in a tube in my closet.
I remember first encountering Harmageddon when it was adapted into a laser disc arcade game like Dragons lair or Cliff hanger in a arcade. It was pretty gory for its time
This was fascinating. I've enjoyed these more in-depth looks behind the production, the times, and history of these. I feel like I gain a great appreciation of the medium. Even if only a fraction of his insanity is true. It's honestly hilarious. Sometimes it takes a crazy person to help revitalize the film industry. For how crazy he was, he was doing something right.
Very slight correction: Neo Tokyo was based on three short stories by Taku Mayumura, not Otomo. His later anthology movie Memories was based on his short stories. Great episode as always.
That live action Japanese Movie looks like it is about Hideyoshi Toiyotomi. I think I remember seeing that style of helmet before and instantly think of him, or am I getting him confused with Ieyatsu Takogawa?
Basically all I remember about this movie is that it was used as the basis of an arcade shooter called “Bega’s Battle” which was essentially a Galaga-alike that used laserdisc footage from the movie between levels.
For the sake of transparency, this now edited comment was used to advertise the original sponsor of this video, which has also since been edited to remove said sponsorship integration, as the intended period of time for it's inclusion has ended.
Great episode, informative and entertaining as always, and I ADORE that shirt..."Just say Smith, or Jones, or something. It don't matter, none of this matters." Ah, the immortal and immoral Carl Brutananadilewski...
What happened to the bigger guy who used to do these? Whatever, this guy is a pretty good replacement. *(JK, I'm new here & I just watched the old videos. I'm proud of you!)*
Congratulations on your marriage, Sage! I hope that you are living and continue to live a very happy and successful life, and thanks for the work that you do here.
Hey sage, I just want to make sure you hear the overwhelming sound of your audience. We all decided that you should do premiere episodes specifically for special episodes. Just clarifying, I look forward to your future review special episodes premieres. As always, thank you for the great content.
0-0…..I don’t think I’ve said “WAIT, WHAT!!?” this many times ever! God almighty this dude sounds like the Japanese equivalent but cocaine loving version of Elon Musk! As for Harmagedon….eh doesn’t look that interesting but the development behind it is fascinating. Great review as always, Bennett! Also, where did you get that “It don’t matter, None of this matters” shirt? (Plus, anyone know what his hate-boner he had for Akira Kurosawa happened? That just fascinates me as well; a insane producer who made some great movies at the time vs. one of the greatest directors of all time in film history)
Hello Bennett the sage my name is Brandon Hamilton and there is a video by Swede from swedes Pokemon Journey that you need to watch before your next review comes out
ruclips.net/video/v6uH71BdMBA/видео.html here is the link but basically what it boils down to is that all RUclips anime channel may very well be gone within the next 3 months
Not really related to the video, but it's weird that I first heard of King Crimson from a joke in The Venture Brothers, when Dean finds "In The Court of The Crimson King" in his dad's prog-rock album collection. "Listening to that too early in your development will make you an Evil scientist."
I LOVE these behind the shitty anime scenes videos, I learn so much and still get to eat my popcorn! and oh man, I am HERE for the final fantasy trash pile! i recently rewatched the legend of the crystals while playing the pixel remaster of 5 and.... the distance between the two is staggering, and yet I see soooo many influences! (looking at you giant sword superhero landing!) Edit: there are several shots in LoC that find their way into FFVIII and FFIX
A few years ago I thought I had watched everything I possibly could from the '80s and '90s that was either dubbed or subtitled into English... But then I found a rather peculiar torrent with some titles I didn't recognize. This anime was one of them. I watched through the entire thing and I barely remember any of it except at the end when the girl with the Yu-Gi-OH! hair was floating in space. I get the feeling I'm definitely gonna remember all the crazy things Haruki Kadokawa did, though.
I remember watching this back in 97…. I had to be at work at blockbuster at 9am and wound up staying up watching it all night… I couldn’t go to sleep so I watched it. Wound up going in on no sleep like a crazy person. Went and got a jolt cola before work .. Don’t remember shit about this movie …. Just that I’ve seen it
As a fan of Prog-rock the part with Keith Emerson was kinda sad. The video was heavily entertaining though. And if Prog-rock really lit the anime scene then hair metal really set it on fire! XD
You know the worst part about this sorry sordid affair? All the nutjob had to do was buy a racing team and fellow Brit Aiden Millward might have wound up going mental looking into his CV for his Story Time! Although, that said, would anyone else agree there's about three subjects for Brendan Tenold's Cult Movie Reviews here? And I say about Aiden, he's covered drug smugglers before who also happened to own racing teams! One who shipped weed around and the pit crew walked around wearing Rolexes and the other flying old planes out of Road Atlanta Raceway, a track many a Forza Player ought to be familiar with at least, their holds packed with coke! I think we know which team Kodikawa would have preferred...

I love it when a review of a crappy anime becomes a documentary of a much more interesting behind-the-scenes history.
That's always been Sage's thing. Guy is a historian and really funny.
That’s why I would propose he do these videos like documentaries and then lead into an actual review of said anime.
That's the sage difference 🤠

For how crazy he was, he was doing something right.
Next episode looks like it's gonna be so much fun!
I haven't seen your videos in a long time. It's been a trip,
Very slight correction: Neo Tokyo was based on three short stories by Taku Mayumura, not Otomo. His later anthology movie Memories was based on his short stories. Great episode as always.
I burst out laughing when you showed the dancing dinosaur and then "Cocaine is a hella of a drug" sound bite. That was genius. perfect.
Sage, we demand a review of the other genma wars anime. i want to know the thought process that went into the line, "i will punch a baby out of you"
That live action Japanese Movie looks like it is about Hideyoshi Toiyotomi.
I think I remember seeing that style of helmet before and instantly think of him, or am I getting him confused with Ieyatsu Takogawa?
I rented the US Manga VHS back in the 90s. At one time the entire back wall of Blockbuster (rip) was Anime tapes.
What's the name of the period piece samurai movie Haruki produced? I would like to watch it, must be hilarious.
Ninja Wars!!
wow that shirt of facepalming Carl is like a bit of pop art
Basically all I remember about this movie is that it was used as the basis of an arcade shooter called “Bega’s Battle” which was essentially a Galaga-alike that used laserdisc footage from the movie between levels.
Hmmm, Galaga was my jam back in the halcyon days of my youth...I may have to go digging for this game on MAME...Thanks for the info!
I love harmageddon! My parents bought the vhs for me for Easter one year. GENMA!
Another great video Sage!
As always, thank you for the great content.
yess new bennett video, today will be a good day
0-0…..I don’t think I’ve said “WAIT, WHAT!!?” this many times ever!
I remember visiting Barcelona when I was younger with my parents: I'm sure there were replicas of at least 1 of Columbus' ships on show.
He produced the Kenya boy anime film too.
Totally awesome video man 😎!
34:48 "Doctor we've done everything we can do." Someone needs to work on their bedside manner.
@14:20 WAIT, did the opening of Dark Souls have an Akira reference all along???
I remember watching this back in 97…. I had to be at work at blockbuster at 9am and wound up staying up watching it all night… I couldn’t go to sleep so I watched it.
Wound up going in on no sleep like a crazy person. Went and got a jolt cola before work ..
Don’t remember shit about this movie …. Just that I’ve seen it
As a fan of Prog-rock the part with Keith Emerson was kinda sad. The video was heavily entertaining though.
And if Prog-rock really lit the anime scene then hair metal really set it on fire! XD
Oh hey it's that one anime I found on vhs at a goodwill and still never got around to watch
