@@TheMindofRa Didn't AngryJoe not watch the original anime OVA for Battle Angel Alita? I'd like to hear BTS' take on it in light of what the OVA also did way back then.
Having read almost the entire manga I can tell you this: It is a journey. An epic of increasingly alien sci-fi societies and concepts of post-humanism. At times it is difficult to sit and read though, and at other times I can't put it down. I recommend the first series at least.
I still have the first series, bought it long, long ago when I just discovered manga and anime. In retrospect, it was "ok." I liked the first half of it, there's a lot of great ideas there. I just didn't care for where the story went, and I kinda stopped empathizing with Alita as it progressed.
Fragtastic and then you get to last order where it falls into modern anime tropes and stalls the plot for like 80 chapters. And then mars chronicles... is... well flip a coin.
I used to read this manga back in high school, and it definitely left an impression on me. For one, it kick-started my love of rocket hammers and elbow blades. Even though I know this kind of setting has been done before, I still feel like there's nothing else like Battle Angel. I get why James Cameron has such a love for this series, it's a series that's easy to fall in love with. It'll always be a big part of my teenage years, and I'm really looking forward to the movie next year.
Battle Angel Alita is one of my all-time favourite manga, with an incredibly interesting world, tons of fascinating characters and great action. And the sequel/continuation Last Order, while not as good, still has some of the most out-there trans-humanism ideas I've seen in any media, as well as some of the most over-the-top action ever, and is worth a read in it's own right, even if it isn't a classic like the first series. :-) The OVA's are incredibly distilled versions of the first 2 volumes, and miss a lot of the really over-the-topp stuff that's in the manga, but they are still good fun and stay true to the spirit of the manga imo. :-)

The surprisingly rare changes are either just plain for the better, allowances to expand the story or out of necessity to nudge the movie down to a PG-13 rating. There's a lot of Hollywood tropes that would've socketed easily into this story, which were thankfully absent. If I had any complaint, it's that I felt Ido should've had a stronger action presence. Crazy thing is, I remember seeing Avatar and picking up on some SERIOUS Battle Angel vibes from the set design (well, what sets there were) and other things. The human spaceships, the inside of some looking very much like the interior rooms of Ketheres, the holograms depicting brains and spinal columns in great detail, the gargantuan demolition vehicles, looking up and seeing Jupiter and its moons in the sky... granted, this stuff is more reminiscent of Last Order than the first manga, but it's exactly the sort of imagery you might expect to see in a live action Battle Angel movie. JC held off on making a Battle Angel movie until he felt the technology was advanced enough to do the world justice and not make it look silly. Avatar was basically him trying out some new toys to see if he COULD pull off a Battle Angel movie, which was supposed to be next, but... for better or worse, Avatar did so insanely well at the box office and so many people loved it that he basically HAD to put Battle Angel on the backburner while churning out more Avatar movies. And so here we are, almost a decade later. But at least the wait seems to have paid off. This comic has always been very important to me, and with half of the characters looking like half-exposed Terminators, it just seems like something meant to be. But with JC ultimately kinda taking a back seat on this one, will it be good? One can hope. It SHOULD be amazing.
That's what they said Avatar was a test bed he designed that technology to make a battle Angel movie he had to wait until the technology got there that's why it came out after.
I remember renting this as a 6 year old from blockbuster. This is before ratings on animated videos. That scene with the dog, fucked me up as a 6 year old. Of course it was subbed not dubbed back then
Sounds like you had either very lazy or very stupid parents. I hope that they learned their lesson, after that. My parents NEVER let me watch anything when I was that age, without first checking it to make sure that it was age-appropriate. And they ever let me watch anything unrated when I was little.
I know plenty of people just a bit younger than me that had that happen. The reason - Oh it's a cartoon? Of course you can rent what is it, Legend of the Overfiend...
6:44 - Funny story. I met Tiffany Grant at FandomCon 2015, and she had a copy of the Battle Angel DVD (which she signed). She even told me "I'm in one of these episodes, but I get killed."
My friend and I went to see it, hoping it would be good. Instead it was EPIC! If you haven't seen the movie yet, go see it. Show support for an anime movie that actually did WELL!
Been a while since I sat through the OVA, didn't catch the first time that it's not just Rei and Shinji from the Eva dub cast as Gally/Alita and Yugo, but also Tiffany Grant (Asuka) in that bit part you mentioned, and isn't that Tristan McAvery, aka Gendo, as the mob boss?
The reason Hollywood shouldn't make live-action anime movies is because people watch anime specifically to escape from Hollywood entertainment cliches.
Battle Angle Alita was my very first manga I read back in middle school. I recommend everyone read it and it's sequel Last Order. It's one of my most favorites and has a lot more to the story with a lot of memorable characters, battles, gore, death and moments that lead up to revealing Alita/Gally's past.
You're right, Sage: Ghost in the Shell _did_ deserve a better reception than it got. I mean, yeah, I thought it was a little too close to Blade Runner, but more than likely the original drew inspiration from Blade Runner, so I didn't mind that much. Good movies are good movies. On the subject of kick-ass lady protagonists, are you going to review Sekirei next year?
Second season called "Pure Engagment", plus the manga, plus the sequel manga that just started on May 2. Reason I ask is because Sage used a clip in his New Dominion Tank Police review, so I know he's at least heard of it, if he doesn't own the DVD collection himself.
8:57 so THIS is where that cap is from, I've seen this before I think in ads for anime in general in foregone years back when The Right Stuf catalog was your best bet to get stuff if you didn't have a video store with a "foreign" section near you.
This is one of my all-time favorites! I can still remember recording it off the Starz Action Channel back in the 90's and sharing it with my friends. I went on to read the manga and play the awesome PS1 game. Actually looking forward to the live action adaptation for once.
Honestly the US dub was really good, capturing the emotion and intensity. But they really needed to tone down some parts and have some better direction. All in all, this anime could’ve spectacular.
I saw this on cable so long ago, but I never forgot about it. Im actually kinda excited to hear all this news about the movie being in production, thanks sage.
Ohhhh, two episodes in a row of old anime I've seen. I didn't realize Battle Angel really took off on DVD. I remember watching a friend's VHS copy back in '98, and enjoying what I saw. Didn't know about the back story behind it (though had heard that Cameron wanted to make a movie). Great episode there. As for Golgo 13: Queen Bee... well, I'll have to watch my copy of that one before the episode. Good ol' Urban Vision.
I really trust James Cameron on this one. There's now a very clear line between what to do and what not to do, thanks to all the weird decisions they made with Ghost in The Shell. I'm looking forward to it, though I'm already disappointed by the fact that Harold Ramis can't be the doctor fellow. Haha, "take the back from under your shirt" is great. Also, that guy who says it totally looks like Angus Young. He doesn't just look like him, he looks like Angus Young *sounds* too, his singing voice anyway. Well, Angus Young himself looks like he sounds, too. Like, I asked "why does he sound that way" and someone showed me a picture of him for the first time and I was just like "ooooh, now I get it." (but seriously, AC/DC rocks) I agree with you about the rockethammer! That thing just deserves to get a bombastic cinematic presentation. :D Sage, I need you to give me a list of every character you refer to as "Shinji". Purely for research purposes. :0 Heeeey, what happened to the regularly scheduled message from High Regent Sage!? D:
Used to see this back on early Encore Action Channel in the Y2K era before smartphones, video stores were around as well as bookstores and advanced Internet. Saw this along with other anime like Psycho Diver and Twilight of the Dark Master when it was still around. By the way if you have time might want to look into these titles for upcoming reviews.
I'm juat from seeing the movie in a theater. It was FREAKING BEATIFUL Goddamn finally we get movie adaptation which just takes original OVA, and starts making movie from it. It is so much better because of it
As someone who hates Naruto ever since the majority of it's part 2 was garbage, Bennett is actually wrong about that. Funny thing, the manga already drew her arms like that so it's not about animation. It's just recreating the manga images.
So interesting to come look back at this. The series is so interesting in it's changes from manga, OVA, and film. We DESERVE to have a full anime reboot, since this series is so good even with it's age.
Just came from watching Alita: Battle Angel. So far the best movie I saw this year. When the movie ended, I was like: "Hey I want to see what happens next. I need Alita 2!"
That dog being cut up by the villain was literally my first ever glimpse of anime. Battle Angel was airing on Encore at 3 a.m., and I remember thinking that was the most disturbing/amazing thing I had ever seen. It made me search out the movie on DVD (because it never came on Encore after that), and ultimately made me the rabid anime fan I am today - roughly 16 years later. Everyone has their entree into anime. What were some others?
Sage got his wish.
The rocket hammer is in the movie and it's an absolute sight to behold.

Don't they already did it in Thor?

Been a while since I sat through the OVA, didn't catch the first time that it's not just Rei and Shinji from the Eva dub cast as Gally/Alita and Yugo, but also Tiffany Grant (Asuka) in that bit part you mentioned, and isn't that Tristan McAvery, aka Gendo, as the mob boss?
The reason Hollywood shouldn't make live-action anime movies is because people watch anime specifically to escape from Hollywood entertainment cliches.
Just found this channel and I LOVE it! Keep up the good work!
We finally got a trailer! Woo!
Please do Saiyuki requiem
4:34 "She's alive!"
Me: I know, because my PKE Meter told me so!
Ikrani Sekeri ever get anymore than the first season or was there a manga?
Second season called "Pure Engagment", plus the manga, plus the sequel manga that just started on May 2.
Reason I ask is because Sage used a clip in his New Dominion Tank Police review, so I know he's at least heard of it, if he doesn't own the DVD collection himself.
I saw this ova years ago, and I forgot about, so thanks for reminding me. Gonna add it to my list on MAL.
Based on the fact that Cameron's apparently frothingly insane, the Battle Angel movie might actually be good.
@The Strawberry Pimp Alita cost less than Avatar and less than Captain Marvel( which is hilarious considering its a James Cammeron production).
From June of 2018 til Febuary 2019 ( due largely to Avenger Infinity War--good call btw) we finally have Alita in theaters!
Rocket hammer is a go! Repeat: rocket hammer is a go!
8:57 so THIS is where that cap is from, I've seen this before I think in ads for anime in general in foregone years back when The Right Stuf catalog was your best bet to get stuff if you didn't have a video store with a "foreign" section near you.
Funny you should mention "Leaving an audience wanting more.", cause the movie (Which was awesome, by the way) has the exact same problem.
Reason why i don't go watch it in Japan.
This is one of my all-time favorites! I can still remember recording it off the Starz Action Channel back in the 90's and sharing it with my friends. I went on to read the manga and play the awesome PS1 game. Actually looking forward to the live action adaptation for once.
Sage, what was your opinion of the live action Alita? We're all curious :D
SO now I am curious as to what you thought of the live action Alita...
“Trailer brought me here” viewers incoming!!!!
piloctor15 given Japanese phonetics and the fact that the cat was male, it's entirely possible that "Gally" is meant to be read as "Gary"
3:21
Hey look! It's Cyber 6 in her secret identity! And she even got a new hair color!
Yet the movie was amazing a must see hopefully a sequel will be made
Honestly the US dub was really good, capturing the emotion and intensity. But they really needed to tone down some parts and have some better direction. All in all, this anime could’ve spectacular.
It only took until 2019 :P Damn CGI setbacks!!! (...What if it was all just to CGI her eyes big...)
DUDE!!! YOUR BACK TO THE FUTURE GLASSES ARE EPICO!!!
So uh... Back again after seeing the movie. It was fuckin' glorious, jet powered hammer AND ALL.
I saw this on cable so long ago, but I never forgot about it. Im actually kinda excited to hear all this news about the movie being in production, thanks sage.
Just got out of the movie, rocket hammer confirmed :3
9:52-I think he pulled it off?
It is FEBRUARY and ITS AWESOME!!!!! (And he does)
How many volumes of the DVD are there?
Actually 2019 an if was fricking awesome
Ohhhh, two episodes in a row of old anime I've seen. I didn't realize Battle Angel really took off on DVD. I remember watching a friend's VHS copy back in '98, and enjoying what I saw. Didn't know about the back story behind it (though had heard that Cameron wanted to make a movie). Great episode there. As for Golgo 13: Queen Bee... well, I'll have to watch my copy of that one before the episode. Good ol' Urban Vision.
Being a hunter-warrior must pay as good as being Gamer-Players these days.
Like, I asked "why does he sound that way" and someone showed me a picture of him for the first time and I was just like "ooooh, now I get it." (but seriously, AC/DC rocks)
I agree with you about the rockethammer! That thing just deserves to get a bombastic cinematic presentation. :D
Sage, I need you to give me a list of every character you refer to as "Shinji". Purely for research purposes. :0
Heeeey, what happened to the regularly scheduled message from High Regent Sage!? D:
Pensive Scarlet how about Robert Rodriguez Directing it?
I agree Ghost in the Shell was a good movie
18:20 Wait, is there another anime coming? Or are you referring to the James Cameron produced film again?
HACK THE PLANET
DEADSEEEEEEEC
They are TRASHING OUR RIGHTS!
DeadBoneJones This is Bobo Danks!
Theres a bunch of rock references and easter eggs throughout the manga. Thats why the Blue Oyster Cult symbol is on Zappa
Alita:Battle Angel movie is awesome! Way more faithful to source material than any other anime live-action films I've seen.
Check it out!
Curious Mitch well that's not hard to achieve compared how faithful other anime adaptions are
Used to see this back on early Encore Action Channel in the Y2K era before smartphones, video stores were around as well as bookstores and advanced Internet. Saw this along with other anime like Psycho Diver and Twilight of the Dark Master when it was still around. By the way if you have time might want to look into these titles for upcoming reviews.
I'm juat from seeing the movie in a theater. It was FREAKING BEATIFUL
Goddamn finally we get movie adaptation which just takes original OVA, and starts making movie from it.
It is so much better because of it
The movie was great! I loved it! Best anime live action movie! Need a sequel!
Back in February I think they said it was in the works. That's why Ed Norton is there at the end.
It still has to been green lit though. Here’s hoping 🤞
Wait the blu ray sells, said the lead actress.
And the movie was pretty good. Like a 7-8 / 10.
this anime ova is what got me into reading and collecting manga
8:34-8:44 INCOMING TRIGGERED NARUTO FANBOYS
dattebayo? more like dattebuttyo
As someone who hates Naruto ever since the majority of it's part 2 was garbage, Bennett is actually wrong about that. Funny thing, the manga already drew her arms like that so it's not about animation. It's just recreating the manga images.
unless the mangaka planned for that?
Gackt4awesome no it really is for that exact reason
Personally, I thought that the run was supposed to interpreted as the knife-wielding counterpart to the cowboy walk.
Alita battle angel challenge is still ongoing let’s get a sequel #AlitaArmy
I wonder what Bennett thinks about the Alita Battle Angel trailer?
THE EYES, THE FUCKIN *EEEYYYYEEEESSSS*
Please.... I didn't see anyone complaining about Gollum's eyes, and those things where fucking HUGE!
So interesting to come look back at this. The series is so interesting in it's changes from manga, OVA, and film. We DESERVE to have a full anime reboot, since this series is so good even with it's age.
The rocket hammer.is in the film it's bad ass
Just came from watching Alita: Battle Angel. So far the best movie I saw this year.
When the movie ended, I was like:
"Hey I want to see what happens next. I need Alita 2!"
Oh my gods! That "Toasty!" was just perfectly placed! I cracked so hard! XD
June 2018, yeah.....
6:18 I swear you voiced Skipper from The Penguins Madagascar.
Shit.... It's actually happening...
