The elderly couple in the elevator with the horse were the actual owners and breeders of the horse. There were pretty famous stunt and trick riders back in the day.
@@VerowakReacts Loren Janes is the stuntman in the elevator when Arnold gets on with the horse. He was Steve McQueen’s stunt double for most of McQueen’s career. Loren also executed one of the craziest and most dangerous stunts ever to appear in a film. At the end of ”What’s up, Doc?” Loren is standing up in a convertible as it is being driven under a long, long tent-like awning before launching off a pier into the harbor. The stunt was designed so that his head would be visible above the canopy as the car raced under, and a metal collar around Loren’s neck was to protect his throat as he tore through the breakaway seam in the fabric. Unfortunately the draft created by the speeding car during the actual take caused the canopy to billow up, and instead of hitting him in the neck, the heavy canopy hit him directly between the eyes, knocking him unconscious. Fortunately his limp, unconscious body was thrown from the car as planned as the car sailed off the pier (at 70mph!!!), and a rescue crew was able to reach him moments after he hit the water. “What’s Up, Doc?” was the first film to ever list stunt performers’ names in the end credits, and Janes certainly deserved the recognition. That was 1972. I heard Loren give his first-hand account of this experience when he came to visit my college in the early 90s.
I have always been impressed by the performance given by Tom Arnold in this movie. His jokes are funny, but even his serious line describing Helen as a "flesh and blood" woman was delivered as if in a real conversation between friends and not just a stilted delivery of a written script. To me this emphasized the importance of a quality director extracting a good performance out of his actors, and not some lazy director just rushing through the dialog in order to get to the next action sequence. When Cameron won his Oscar for directing "Titanic" I thought it was well deserved. He took a story in which everyone thought they knew how "the story" would progress, and he turned it into a gripping movie that draws the viewer in, and evokes tears from damn near every first time viewer. I was thoroughly disappointed when the Hollywood press turned against Cameron after the Oscars when he repeated Leo DiCaprio's line from the movie, "I'm king of the world!" Cameron was expressing his level of joy to be like that felt by the character Jack in the movie standing on the bow of the ship, instead the press failed to comprehend the character connection, and criticized the moment as if Cameron was the ultimate egotistical director.
Early in his career Arnold was told to get a stage name, but through sheer awesomeness the name 'SCHWARZENEGGER' became the most bankable name to stick on a movie poster in Hollywood. The Total Recall marketing was just his name and the title of the movie, that's all that was needed to sell a blockbuster in 1990
@@watts18269 He actually tried Arnold 'Strong' for one or two of his first movies (Hercules in New York). He gave that up fast. They also toyed with dubbing his voice. But he could not be improved upon.
Early in his career Arnold had his name truncated “stage named” to “Arnold Strong ‘Mr. Universe’”. This was in the film Hercules in New York. Where they ALSO DUBBED HIS VOICE OVER ENTIRELY! It is not a good movie but it is interesting fun weird. The voice actor was NOT even a guy who sounded like an almost Arnold but more clear. It’s a funny fit.
This film has a tangential link to "The Exorcist". When Jamie Lee meets Paxton, they're under the Key Bridge. When you come into Washington, DC, take the Key Bridge to a gas station. Beside that station is the long staircase to the Exorcist house.
The scene where he picks her up from the limo with the helicopter was so iconic at that time, that at the Oscars that year, when Jamie Lee Curtis came out to present an award, they lowered her onto the stage with a prop helicopter with the black dress and all. There is a clip here on YT of it, look it up. Also, the scene where he is talking to Tom Arnold after finding out Helen is having an affair, when Tom's character is talking about his wife, saying, "She took the ice cube trays out of the freezer! What kind of sick bitch takes the ice cube trays out of the freezer??" Well, at that time, Tom was in the midst of a divorce from Roseanne Barr. She did take everything, including the ice cube trays, his adlib was a direct reference to that. It worked so well, it was left in. The pettiness surrounding their divorce, immortalized in film forever...

You always feel like you get such honesty from Verowak doesn't mean she doesn't hold her tongue like everyone else from time to time. Another nice watch along here. 👍
This is one of those fun movies that sneaks under the radar. I never heard of it until I started watching reaction videos. I had to stop, order the DVD, and watch the entire thing. Great flick!
In the 90's there was a show that Tia Carrera was in, called Relic Hunter. It was a little campy and loosely was Tomb Hunter/Lara Croft. Tia has shown she has a great sense of humor. There was a teen show in Canada at the time and they met up with Tia at a red carpet event and stopped her to ask, "Tia, Tia! We always watch Relic Hunter with the sound off, what's it about?" :D
Arnold and Jamie Lee had really great chemistry in this film. Tia Carrera is famously known for Wayne’s World (1992) and its sequel, Wayne’s World 2 (1993) and was the star of the Tomb Raider knockoff, Relic Hunter (1999-2002). Eliza Dushku, the actress that plays Arnold’s spunky daughter in the film, Dana, would become famous as Faith Lehane, the alternate slayer, from the third season onwards of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She went on to star as Tru Davies in the supernatural series, Tru Calling (2003-05) and then go on to star as Echo in the SF series, Dollhouse (2009-10). She is also known for her roles in Bring It On (2000) and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001).
My favourite scene was Helen's dance routine in the hotel room 😁. A little bit of trivia about that scene. When Jamie Lee Curtis's hand slipped from the bed post and she fell to the floor then made a quick recovery, that was not scripted. But while it wasn’t in the script, it was an improvisation orchestrated by both James Cameron and Jamie Lee Curtis. It worked beautifully. When True Lies was release in 1994, a few people were critical of some lines of dialogue, finding it somewhat misogynistic. I don't agree with that but I guess it comes down perception.
Check your sources. Fall was rehearsed, however Arnold didn't know so his 1st take, concerned sit up, was not scripted (Ms. Vero also mentions this at end of video) 49:05
@MrMice... That is what I said, that "slip" to the floor was not in the script. It was unexpected by the other cast and crew members. Whether or not it was "rehearsed" after the first take was not the point. It reminded me of "If it's not on the page, it's not on the stage"
This movie is so much fun, LOL! Just a hoot. I loved his talk with the horse. I hope the horse did get all the treatos! Thanks for sharing this one, Verowak. It was fun rewatching it with you.
Good movie and a great reaction as always, worth the wait indeed. And yeah, the 90s was an amazing action movie era. Arnold, Stallone, Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren and many others made sure of that.
Regarding the ratings of this movie: While it was fun and all, it still was a product of its time. And in the 80s and 90s we did get a lot of great action movies. You could say that the standards were higher, so the audience score would reflect that this one had some serious competition to score against.
So funny story part of the reason the Tom has the reaction he does when Arnold punches out the car window is Arnold missed the stunt window and punched out a real car window. Give him the GD page.
A fun action movie. The chemistry shows. Fun Fact: The bridge that is blown up was the original one that went to the Florida Keys. They let them blow it up.
That's actually just an urban myth. There's a pretty good behind-the-scenes where they show how they built the "miniature" of that bridge, and how they coordinated the various events (from the speed of the remote cars to the explosions and everything - the only CGI added later were the missiles)
Dana was played by Eliza Dushku, probably best known as Faith on the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Here first appearance was in season three of the show.
Arnie, doing comedy in a movie??? Ridiculous! Guess we'll just have watch "Twins" or maybe "Kindergarten Cop!" And see for ourselves....thanks Verowak, as always. See ya next time.
The part where she fell down was an accident, but she played it off really well. I met AS when they were filming this movie. The shot part of the movie at a ski area I was working at and rode up the ski lift with him on my day off. I just realized, this movie was made 30 years ago!
As for Jamie Leigh wearing own undergarments. It's always interesting when an when someone brings their own clothes to set. Like in Rick Astley's famous "Never Gonna Give You Up" music video he brought a bunch of his own clothes in a trash bag and they picked an outfit from that.
35:00 Every recoilless and/or rocket launcher has backblast. An area behind the shooter must be cleared, because people standing behind launchers get killed or hurt. It was the right way, but the guy still got the bad end of the stick.
32:01 It’s quite an accurate depiction of a warhead. They go on top of much larger rockets. You cannot launch it when it’s detached from the rocket. But you can detonate it. Maybe.
32:27 "Where'd he get [the grenade]?" -- It was originally in the script that Juno put a grenade between Helen's legs, saying all she has to do is keep her legs closed, which Helen remarks is a problem Juno seems to have. When the two escape, Harry re-pinned the grenade using Helen's diamond earring for use again later. This was cut from the film, causing this grenade's presence to appear to be a continuity error.
36:37 There have been many movies where a stunt required someone to be lifted out of a car, but this was the first time where the stunt person just stayed where they were and the car was dropped from them.
The "stunt person" in that case was Jamie Lee Curtis by the way... She did the vast majority of her stunts herself, not just in this movie, but in pretty much all of them.
Hello Miss Verowak, very nice to see you!😊 I got a late start today.😉 This was definitely James Cameron's attempt at a James Bond style film. The actress that plays Juno Skinner (Tia Carrere) is probably known to most people from the comedy "Wayne's World" (1992), a film based on an SNL skit. Harry's daughter Dana (Eliza Dushku) is best known for the TV series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" where she played Faith. The guy that goes to shoot Harry in the bathroom is dressed like Arnold in the first Terminator film. Look at you Detective Vero! You recognized Bill Paxton's voice.😉 Great reactions to this well made action film, Vero!!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This movie IS awesome. I'll never understand how so many people can say, "I loved it! My score: 62%! Life-altering sex that I'll never forget? I give it a solid 7.3!" Maybe some people aren't into grading by curves, but if you refuse to use the top 20% out of principle, then what's the point of using a 0-100 scale in the first place?? And if the past twenty years have taught us anything, it's that good writing is hard to come by, which is why movies like True Lies stand the test of time over other movies that were scored higher upon release. And to me, anything that stands the test of time deserves to be re-evaluated. This movie is a classic for a reason.
Aww shame, I won't be able to attend the Premiere. Love being in the chat with the lovely Vero. Fun and entertaining movie, will watch the upload later xx
Another great reaction. The snowmobile chase looked like a blast, i grew up in northern Maine for 10 years and went snowmobiling a lot since snow was pretty common during the winter aside from plenty of winter days where it goes a few degrees below zero. My grandparents in Maine have 2 snowmobiles and they would take my brother and i on snowmobile trips, even got to go snowmobiling one and have breakfast with people they knew to which there were hash browns, pancakes, waffles, bagles, English muffins, milk, coffee and so much breakfasty goodness. Verowak you have done it again, would have watched the reaction earlier however I worked today 12 to 5 pm and wanted to unwind before coming along. My great grandma webb's first name Helen
Trust in James Cameron to have a NUCLEAR BOMB EXPLOSION as a background detail in a movie. This really is his attempt of making a James Bond movie, (albeit with the volume cranked up to 11) ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡° )
The story I read is that he had been trying to get a James Bond director pitch going for awhile but when he kept getting nowhere just decided to do it himself
I always look forward to women reacting to the line "If not for me, Helen, do it for your country!". That one was the most hilarious one in the entire movie, BTW, if you are looking for one-liners from Arnold, his best one IMHO is "The Running Man".
Welp, while we're tallying Harry's various crimes and misdemeanors, I'm pretty sure it's illegal to fly a plane in a city at a lower altitude than rooftops.
As far as Rotten Tomatoes scores, recall this movie came out long before going online to rate a movie was a thing. Most of the people who saw this in theaters didn't go on Rotten Tomatoes. For context, this movie made $378 million. It was the 3rd highest grossing movie of the year.
This movie is a remake off a French movie "La totale" with Thiery Lhermite and Miou Miou. When Cameron see the original french movie, he adore him and want make an US version.
One of the funniest romantic comedy action movies ever made! A TV show based on the movie was released on CBS in 2023, but it was cancelled due to low ratings as well as the infamous Hollywood Writers Strike.
Not terribly common knowledge, but Bill Paxton was also a singer in a New Wave group called Martini Ranch. Look up their song, How Can The Laboring Man Find Time For Self Culture. Reminiscent of some of the more melodic DEVO songs.
Best Arnold acting in any movie he’s ever done. The bridge explosion is terrific. The miniature remote control truck wasn’t supposed to fly across the gap and land on the other side. But it looked so good, and the miniature and explosion was so expensive, they couldn’t do it again, so the digitally comped a wrecked truck on the other side in later shots where the flying truck landed.
"Thats a fine animal." *horse whips woman in face with tail* The fun thing about that older couple in the elevator is they were the horse's handlers (or owners/trainers or something).
My boss let me get off work early to get ready for a date. Boss was a great guy and I was best man at his wedding. I had time to kill, so I went to see True Lies. I planned not to see the whole film and just leave for my date. I had so much fun I watched until the end credits. I missed my date and stood her up. Oh, well. I do have True Lies on VHS, Laser Disc and DVD. So, win win. Poor low battery guy killed by a Pelican.
😎👍 With Arnold, you pretty much always know what you're getting, no matter which movie it is. Lots of gun-play, explosions, car chases, foot chases, hand-to-hand whoop-ass, and above all else, snarky wise-cracks. 😄 If you check out "Commando" (1985), "Running Man" (1987), "Red Heat" (1988), "Total Recall" (1990) and "The Last Action Hero (1993), you'll see and hear a lot more of all those things, always executed with a great deal of pizazz. 😉
The standard word for easily set on fire used to be inflammable with the opposite being non-flammable, however, it was thought that inflammable sounded like a negative and might be confusing so the standard was changed to flammable with non-flammable remaining the opposite but it is still a bit confusing that inflammable and flammable mean exactly the same thing.
James Cameron once told me that I was the inspiration for “Arnold’s character” - but he didn’t make it clear whether he was talking about Arnold Schwarzenegger or Tom Arnold.
Could you rephrase that? Something's not making sense. He told you that you're the inspiration for "Arnold's character"? So why would you think he's talking about Tom Arnold? And you knew James Cameron? I'm guessing you left something out.
Verowak, with all the times Arnold says sorry, he should be Canadian eh? And this is coming from a Canadian 😋 By the way i like that you sang "Harry's got a gun" in reference to that Aerosmith tune, nice touch 👌

Every recoilless and/or rocket launcher has backblast. An area behind the shooter must be cleared, because people standing behind launchers get killed or hurt. It was the right way, but the guy still got the bad end of the stick.
32:01
It’s quite an accurate depiction of a warhead.
Ahh!!! Thanks for that, I was very confused lol
My favorite Arnie comedy is still Kindergarten Cop. I hope you react to that one, some day.
One day, for sure!
41:05 Those eye rolls and head tilts. 😂
I really enjoy your reactions and the editing!
Hahaha I'm glad to hear!! Expressions can be much greater than words lol
I hope you had a nice day!
This really is very much one of my favorite films. Truly a classic. So happy you enjoyed it!
ART MALIK WHAT AN O.G. OF AN ACTOR.
'Give it to me now!'
"Hey..because it's you" 😉😁
😂He played the role so well
@@VerowakReacts He did, he's a good actor. Loved your reaction btw 😁👍
I never saw it as a romantic movie. Then James Bond is a romantic movie aswell 😛
I wasn't aware that they made a TV series. I always hear about shows after they've been cancelled or are a few seasons in already :(
0:40 "I've watched three masterpieces of that director, so I guess that film is gonna be fun." XD
You know what else is a James Cameron movie? Alita: Battle Angel (2019). You need to react to it (uses a jedi hand gesture)
I can see that you're a battle angel fan! 😁
@@VerowakReacts Okay but... and hear me out... they have a point. 🤣
@@VerowakReacts Correct, thanks and I am a little obvious about that. :D
Jamie Lee Curtis won a Golden Globe for her performance in this!
Not terribly common knowledge, but Bill Paxton was also a singer in a New Wave group called Martini Ranch. Look up their song, How Can The Laboring Man Find Time For Self Culture. Reminiscent of some of the more melodic DEVO songs.
Bigger thing to consider - when firing bullets into the air, they do come down and can be/often are fatal since the first place to hit is your head.
Yeah, but given how high the bullet gets, it would be extremely improbable for it to land anywhere near the shooters.
The daughter is played by Eliza Dushku, who went on to be in "The New Guy" with DJ Qualls, "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back", and the "Buffy" tv series.
Jamie Lee Curtis has nothing but good things to say about working with Arnold.
This lady AND this movie? Awesome! My Saturday just got better.
😊I hope you enjoyed!!
23:35 "Would a spy _pee_ himself!"
To protect his cover? He might.
"Thats a fine animal." *horse whips woman in face with tail*
The fun thing about that older couple in the elevator is they were the horse's handlers (or owners/trainers or something).
35:10 That weapon has a massive backblast. It can kill what is behind the shooter and before the shooter.
The beauty with comedy (even in this sort of film) is you get away with more silly stuff.
Great reaction Verowak to a arnie classic. The last movie arnie did with james cameron. Very enjoyable and fun to watch it again with u Verowak
The movie is definitely worth standing someone up 😄
hears Blue Danube, thinks Homer Simpson in space, clearly someone who has never seen 2001.😊
Definitely have not seen it lol
😎👍 With Arnold, you pretty much always know what you're getting, no matter which movie it is. Lots of gun-play, explosions, car chases, foot chases, hand-to-hand whoop-ass, and above all else, snarky wise-cracks. 😄 If you check out "Commando" (1985), "Running Man" (1987), "Red Heat" (1988), "Total Recall" (1990) and "The Last Action Hero (1993), you'll see and hear a lot more of all those things, always executed with a great deal of pizazz. 😉
He's a joy to watch on screen!
I'd love to see you point out all "lots of gun-play" in "Conan" 😝
This was my first time seeing Eliza Dushku.
3:59 "Por una Cabeza" previously featured in _Schindlers’s List_ (1993) and _Scent of a Woman_ (1992).
Awesome! My day just got better! Hey vero i hope you day is going good for you! You are the best at reaction videos!
Aww, thank you so much!! 🥰
Arnold sounds very Canadian early in this movie with all those "sorry" lines haha
Yes! So apologetic, it was a nice touch to the character, it's consistent too!
Fun review as always, V! Interesting that you liked the side story with Helen's "affair" because a some critics did not.
Thanks B! Some critics are party poopers 🤣
Such a fun and exciting movie, have always loved it, glad you enjoyed 🙏
True Lies is the best action comedy of the 1990s
Great reaction Verowak, you are so fun! Great smile and lovely eyes too!
Can you do the movie nightcrawler with jake gyllenhall next?
Oh Canada
❤
I easily would put this as one of Arnold's best.
Great reaction, as always. Thanks.
Thank you!! Glad you enjoyed it :) 💜
That pelican is a well-trained operative.
@@BattleAngelFan99 He's just making a joke
Eliza Dushku's 1st major movie role.
Arnold has a few comedies that are fun. Kindergarten Cop, Twins, Jingle All the Way...
I'll get to most if not all of them!! He's been in great movies
Verowak, with all the times Arnold says sorry, he should be Canadian eh? And this is coming from a Canadian 😋
By the way i like that you sang "Harry's got a gun" in reference to that Aerosmith tune, nice touch 👌
Definitely an honorary Canadian at the very minimum!
See? Dont neglect your partner or they may end up falling for "a goddamn used car salesman"
It seems an odd movie for James Cameron, but I enjoyed the confidence of his moviemaking here.
It's nice to see a filmmaker do a movie in a completely different genre than they're used to
37:44 Fly? Yes. Land? No.
My favorite Arnold movie. TOM that is! Gotta be the best gig he ever had
as a canadian, i assume you can really relate to harry's polite and apologetic nature
Yes! It was very nice to hear him be so apologetic 😄
US remake of french movie La Totale by Claude Zidi
