KC native here. I loved this video for giving KC some love (BTW, Joe's was the only place you went that was in KANSAS... the others were in Missouri), but for anyone to judge "KC style" BBQ, you've got to start with the two granddaddies of the local scene: Arthur Bryant's and Gates & Sons. Next, another longtime local heavy-hitter is Fiorella's Jack Stack (formerly Smoke Stack). After those Big Three, there are many, many small stalwart mom-and-pop's as well as shiny newcomers and chef-inspired boutique BBQ joints. Everyone in town has THEIR favorite that they say is THE best. Slap's is definitely a good one among the newcomers, and Joe's KC (it will still always be Oklahoma Joe's to me...) is surely a local biggie as well. Many of these places (including Joe's) were prize-winning competition BBQ teams that decided to go into business. I'm 55, and I'm still finding BBQ places that I didn't know about! (For the record: Gate's is my personal favorite.)

I've told people that British baked beans are closer to our pork & beans than our baked beans. For one thing our baked beans tend to have a thicker sauce because of the added brown sugar and molasses or maple syrup that is cooked diwn till it thickens up.

    • @DawaLhamo

Exactly this. Slow baking them concentrates the flavor. What you put on toast looks like our pork and beans.

Glad you guys went to KC though, they are easily one of the best BBQ cities in the US.

KC style is my favorite, but don't get between me and a Texas style sliced brisket sammich with pickles, onion and Texas toast.
Big difference between Texas style and KC is Texas BBQ is pretty much centered around beef, with a definite German influence while KC will cook EVERYTHING, beef. pork, chicken, sausage, turkey, raccoon, woodchuck, Opossum, snapping turtle, etc. Don't believe me? Go look up some of Henry Perry's (Father of KC BBQ) ads from back in the day.

    • @Dreznin
      @Dreznin Месяц назад +2

My personal favorite will always be the Carolina Low Country BBQ (pork hash served with rice, gold sauce, and sweet tea), but I'm biased since that's what I grew up with. I've lived in KC for the past 26 years and even as much as I love that Carolina BBQ, you're never going to see me complain about good KC BBQ. Memphis, Texas, Bama, KC - they're all great... the only BBQ that I've ever had that I didn't feel amazed by was the vinegar sauce BBQ you get in the Carolinas outside of the Low Country, it just never clicked for me.

It's not barbecue, but if you brown it and add it to the slow cooker with spice, veg broth and onions on high for 6 hours you get a pretty good pulled pork. For the sauce add apple cider vinegar to Head Country BBQ sauce (my husband cowboyed for the creator, Bud Head) with some garlic, apple juice and onion and it's amazing. The sauce is sweet because the base of most KC BBQ sauce is typically tomato and molasses often with brown sugar and apple cider vinegar, then you mix in spices to taste. So all of KC signature sauces will taste a bit different, but almost all of them will have a sweet base.

It's great to see someone not just talking about Texas barbeque all the time. As someone who has been all over and who is old, I can tell you that America has a good amount of various excellent regional barbeque styles, with different sauces and emphasizing different meats. Kansas City BBQ is one of the best, and is probably one of the most underrated. There is also excellent Chicago BBQ (where I am from, which primarily uses ribs instead of brisket); South Carolina (which features pulled pork and a mustard based sauce); North Carolina (which features pulled pork with a vinegar based sauce); and Saint Louis BBQ, which also features ribs. I suggest that the next time you are in any of these places (especially Chicago), that you try each of their different excellent BBQ styles.

Texas people get so but hurt when people enjoy other bbq. If you paid attention you can hear how they talk about how good the meat is. Here in Kansas City, it's all about the sauce. Do you like a lot, a little, or none. Then it's about the taste of the sauce whether it's sweet, spicy, vinegar, etc. When the BBQ is done right, you can choose whether or not to have sauce.
A second thing of KC BBQ is burnt ends as you tried. I would say the best burnt ends in KC are at Meat Mitch. If you come back, I would suggest a burnt ends tour! Thanks for coming to our city and sharing your experiences! You're making me hungry just watching!

‘I’ll Be the Judge of THAT.’ 😂 The best taglines always have a cheeky inflection.
My top three include Texas BBQ, Carolina BBQ (north vinegar and south mustard) and Kansas City BBQ, in that order.
I’ve enjoyed watching the two of you interact with each other and the viewers on your vids.
I’m sure that you will find along the way some of the dishes aren’t quite your cup of tea and it’s okay to say so; we all have a different ranking order according to taste.
I cringe every time you guys drink black coffee but it’s only because I like mine to taste like a dessert (minimum one cream, two sugars). 😂
Suggestion: If you ever see a Honey Baked Ham Store/Shop during your travels, it’s well worth stopping in for a sandwich or a meal.
Outside of Terry Black’s they have the best smoked and roasted turkey and their honey baked ham is a Thanksgiving Day favorite (Loaded mashed potatoes, gourmet mac n cheese, bean casserole, sweet potato souffle, pumpkin spiced or pecan pie).
Cracker Barrel also has a really good Thanksgiving Day Plate (battered/fried turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, collard greens, candied yams, cranberry sauce, corn bread, dinner rolls, apple crumble).

I love pulled pork. I’ve been smoking meat for about 30 years, but I still need sauce on pulled pork. By the way, KC is maybe the most underrated food city in America. I’ve been nearly everywhere in this country and lived in 6 states. I still look forward to eating in KC. I happen to be a Q39 guy, but the other 2 are great.

You got to go to Kentucky and try the Kentucky hot brown made 150 years ago at the brown hotel for the Kentucky Derby. It's amazing.

I moved to Kansas City a little more than a year ago. My wife and I love it! There are so many BBQ places to try that we are given the nickname the BBQ Capital of the World. Every year the biggest BBQ competition comes here called the American Royal. My personal favorite is Arthur Bryants. I love it so much that I have taken up the hobby of smoking meats myself.

Love you guys. First video I've watched of yours. Kansas City born and raised. Still live here. I have traveled the US and tried BBQ all over, and I whole heartedly believe KC has the best BBQ in the country. Maybe my taste buds are biased though. LCs is honestly probably my favorite. Glad you guys got to experience it. Also, Joes BBQ at the gas station is the only one that was in Kansas. The other 2 were in Missouri. There is a Kansas City, Kansas and a Kansas City Missouri. Just a bit of geographical knowledge for ya.. Also, the look out where you finished your video is one of my favorite spots in the city. Look forwards to watching more

I am glad you enjoyed the area and the food. There are a couple of BBQ places you should check out, I see most comments have already mentioned Author Bryants, but the other KC original is Gates and Sons. I think Gates has the best sauce around and their sandwiches are great. I think that all the BBQ around KC is really good, and I go to places depending on the type of meat I crave. It is always to each their own, so try them all and you will be happy! Great video, and look forward to you traveling to KC again!
