if you take a train during China national holiday or Chinese new year, you will understand why China railway station is massive right away. basically all these public infra are designed base on the peak week or peak month and also consider the future expansion.
you have to book train tickets ahead of time. you are lucky to even get a ticket for the same day if it's busy season. in general if anything can be booked ahead of time, do it. there are a lot of people in china lol.
You should order online on your phone or laptop 💻. They have list of times. Nobody goes to the ticket booth in the train stations. Passport your ticket. 🎟️ No physical ticket. Taxis is cheap. USA 🇺🇸 or western countries very expensive.
I highly recommend you to come to Tibet for a visit(not just Lahsa but also other natural scenic spots),though you may need some extra preparations like a special permission and a guide.I take a self-driving road trip around the Ali region(a district of Tibet) during this national day holiday.The natural scenery is so stunning and breathtaking,and you will hardly see "people mountain people sea" in these places.I can say that most of the time,you just park your car along the road,and you can enjoy the heavenly nature exclusively without being disturbed by others.

I don't think your train seat was an Economy Class seat. It looks like a First Class, especially because of the configuration 2x2. The Economy one is always 3x2. And remember, in China Business Class is the highest class!
