- "Hey, Johnny Cope, are you waulkin' yet?" is a song about the Battle of Prestonpans in 1745 in Scotland during the Jacobite uprising. The words were composed by Adam Skirving, a local farmer, who was maltreated by the Jacobite victors. The song is often misinterpreted as pro-Jacobite because the writer takes Sir John Cope and his army to task for failing so miserably. It's a great tune. Robert Burns used it for one of his songs. I don't remember how I came up with this setting, but I don't think I got it from a book. Liam O'Flynn's version on Planxty's "Cold Blow and a Rainy Night" is an inspiration. It must have come from listening to that record hundreds of times, but I'll never approach O'Flynn's brilliant piping while I'm still alive. There's a detailed musical history of the tune on rushymountain.com.
