Came here for a refresh. I didn't notice that at 1:07 ish when you finish the 1st era you mentioned that you have to discard to your hand limit at the start of your turn. But, the rules state that all players need to discard to hand limit before play for that round begins. I assume this is due to an advantage later players would have with some many options after seeing where people have played. Page 16 in my rules: Once everyone has discarded down to 3 cards, you are ready to play the next era with the new deck; or if you have completed the third era, you are ready for final scoring.
Huh, interesting. Yeah it looks like I got that slightly wrong, assuming it worked the same as at the start of the game. I've added a correction, thanks for pointing this out.
another great runthrough I love the way you explain the game whilst playing, at Spiel this year I was demoing Raiatea, and used much of your methods to get people playing while I was explaining. Thanks again for this!
GREAT--- great game - by 3rd playthrough it flows SO SMOOTHLY - you'll have your move planned as someone else finishes their turn...the length shrinks significantly....
Fantastic playthrough as usual. Thanks so much for your efforts Jon! I'd heard that a heavy kelp strategy was a surefire winner, so it's great to see such a close race. This game was the highlight of Essen 2018 for me. I've seen so many complaints about the production quality and artwork but, for me, they're both totally fine and far outweighed by the excellence and enjoyability of the mechanics. Vladimir is on a roll - can't wait to see what he comes up with next!
I read that thread about heavy kelp being overpowered as well. I've gone quite heavy in kelp in two of my plays so far, but haven't cracked 110 points yet and I saw people saying they were getting well over 120 so perhaps they are executing it better than I have been. Either way, I generally try to play the game towards to benefits that I see on the cards as I built out my strategy organically because that's more fun to me and hopefully also competitive.
I was almost convinced to get it, but knowing this could change my mind. After several plays, does the kelp strategy keep being the winning one or are there multiple routs to victory? Is there the runaway leader problem? I'm concerned now =S.
(A sort of) AAR: Very enjoyable game! Played with two very competent mates and even with varied strategies all came out within 6 points. Your playthrough greatly helped me orient to the dual 'worker placement/card action' mechanism from the get go. Having an insight into the flow of the eras and the feast/famine economy proved valuable in me keeping up with my compatriots. I don't get to play face-to-face as often as I'd like, and your video was definitely facilitating of me getting the most out of one of those occasions. Cheers :).
Looks like a super interesting game...and wow, what a nice playthrough. I really liked the money engine of the orange player (I trigger this to trigger that to trigger that card also...just superb :) ). I was also pleasantly surprised about the good end result of blue despite not having such a visibly good engine. Overall, this was a really great watch. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your playthroughs!
Thanks for the kind words, I'm with you on how neat that money engine was that Orange was able to put together. I'm looking forward to exploring other combos in the future.
I can see what you mean, but artwork is quite expensive and this is a new publisher so I think overall they did a great job of making a great looking game on what was I'm sure a tight budget.
These videos are so good. Love that it just starts and rules and play happen at the same time. One thing I don’t understand is the use of the term “evaluate” with reference to playing cards. Is it intended to mean “perform” as in perform an action? I think so but am not positive.
You aren't the first person to bring up my usage of "evaluate", sorry for the confusion. My father is British and uses "evaluate" like "perform" as you say, and it's really stuck in my brain as the a term to use. I'm not sure if it's a British specific thing, again sorry for the confusion.
you could of swapped a steal for a science twice in your last round when you activated two action cards(2:24:35 and 2:25:23)...you would have had to grab a steel instead of a food off the main action but it would have netted you the two points needed to win even with oranges missing point.
Ooo good catch. I missed this entirely, and I certainly should have done that to grab those last 2 points. This is just one of the reasons I did a 2p game instead of 3p, I knew I was at a high risk of missing synergies and interactions.
How was I NOT subscribed earlier....? Double thumbs up for teaching the game. The only problem I have with the game is the chaos of having so many claimed cards - keeping track of advantages that are possible to guide the nuances of each turn. Otherwise excellent game! Hard to grip what's going on with the theme in detail, got more interesting after watching a while. Game seems great mechanically.
