Not to mention full explanations and thought processes, which is incredibly invaluable! Just found a copy of Wingspan yesterday, can’t wait to get it played!
Thanks Jon! I appreciate how you display each card before you play it. A lot of other playthroughs just film from above and at times makes it hard to see what’s really going on. Appreciate the effort you put in to make things clearer.
No problem, honestly the reason I started doing this was because I was frustrated when I saw other people not show the game details with those high up shots.
Awesome play through! I actually watched the entire video. Im so psyched about this game. I can't wait to get my hands on it. You did a great job showing how this game is played.
Thanks for taking the time to produce this-thoroughly enjoyed it and very useful for beginners to get an understanding of the dynamics involved in this game- well done.
Your play through was so helpful, really well made and super clear. So useful to hear your rational for choosing different birds and to see the cards clearly. Just got this game and I’m gonna be teaching it to new players, so thanks for helping me to understand it myself first!
To mirror other comments, I really enjoy these full playthroughs, they offer good explanation and you do a pretty good job of keeping your tactics separate for the individual players (even though there are occasionally a few rare messups). Also this game looks incredibly fun, I'm going to have to put this on my short list.
Ive watched this, Maracaibo and imperium classics playthroughs and they've helped me so much Jon. So a big thank you for your videos, ...how you describe each action, your thought process involved and the close up of cards. It's been an invaluable resource and much appreciated.
Thanks for this video! I'm playing tonight with the family. I was originally wary of how complicated this game looked, but your video made it seem so simple. You rock.
Not just the best wingspan tutorial video. Great strategy analysis also. Combined with descent camerawork and Klingon subtitles, that's an absolute must for everyone that owns this game and future owners.
Thanks for this exceptionally good explained playthrough. Bought the digital version on the switch and the tutorial left me with a lot of questions. After watching your playthrough I picked up the game again and was able to win the next two games against two ai opponents and I think I'm good to go now to master this awesome game! Thanks a lot again!
Jon, I picked up Wingspan last night for my family and I went straight to this how to play video after seeing your Spirit Island video previously. I appreciate the way you play a full game, explain the player decisions and show everything clearly (cards, player actions, etc). Thank you!
Thank you for this tutorial, my brother got me the game for my birthday because we’re both huge bird lovers but had never even seen how to play the game so we were very confused when reading through the instructions. Several other tutorials we watched first only talked through the setup with a brief description of the gameplay, and we still didn’t get it until I found your video and we were finally able to see how it worked! Thanks again!
Thank you for another great teach and playthrough. I pre-ordered Wingspan and should get it in the next few weeks, so I might have to play your video again to refresh my memory. :)
Thanks for the content. This is going to be on numerous game of the year lists. Comprehensive, well-spoken, and well-filmed as always, sir. I notice you're even slowing you speech a bit -- much appreciated.
@@masterbridgemaster1 I'm in the same boat Horace. When editing I watch at 2x speed to cut down on the overall time spent on the project. Sometimes I forget I'm watching at 2x speed and try to speed up to it which actually puts it up to 3 or 4x and that's WAY too fast.
Another great play through by you, as usual, high quality and elaborated explanations on most moves. I'm sorry to say you made quite a big mistake early on in the game. After purple's second turn, probably due to editing, the food payed for Cassin's Sparrow (an invertebrate and a seed) was returned to the play area and used again later to play the eastern Phoebe and another bird)
Huh, that is a strange mistake to make. I clearly took them off screen, but they do pop back on our next turn. I actually remembering during the edit thinking that I was surprised at how few "Gain Food" actions we as the Purple player had to take, and now I see that this is likely a big reason why. Fortunately it doesn't mess with the flow and teaching of the game, it just means theres a pretty big asterisk next to our final score :)
You clearly put a lot of effort into this. Well done. I especially appreciate the "mea culpa" comments where you admitted making a mistake since newbs are very likely to do so as well. #featurenotbug
Really nice playthrough!! I pre-ordered the german version already, can't wait to get it on my table. Your final score should be 99 instead of 89, so it wasn't that close at the end as you thought ;)
Hey Jon! Thanks for the great video! One question pls. Do you like the game? Do you think it lives up to the hype? If you were to give it a review what would be your final thoughts? Thank you!
You can find my initial thoughts here: ruclips.net/video/ysgnnBGrJUY/видео.html and a brief discussion of why I decided to get rid of it here: ruclips.net/video/5ZC2FY5yEhI/видео.html
I think it's safe to say that it's never NOT tricky when playing multiple people. That's why an overall simple rulset game like this one still took me almost 7 hours to record.
@@JonGetsGames wow. I certainly appreciate your dedication. These videos are amazing. I've purchased a few games after seeing you play them, so once my funds come up I will likely support your patreon.
@@alexblake5828 Ah gotcha. Well I hope you enjoy them both. I've played Vindication a couple times since I filmed the playthrough and I've had a good time with it.
Is the supply considered infinite? That is to say, if you keep caching seeds and other players were too or hording them, is it possible to just run out? At that point, is a die showing a seed a wild card, or just a complete waste?
I believe the supply is supposed to be infinite for seeds and eggs, and if you run out you just use something else to track. At this point I've never seen food get close to running out, though eggs have gotten close a couple times.
Unfortunately I don't think that is going to happen. I have never made a video covering solo rules for a board game and I almost never make 2 videos about the same game. I just don't have any personal interest in solo gaming which is why I haven't followed it into videos.
Yeah unfortunately I messed that up. Someone mentioned that already and I have a correction about it that you can see if you turn the Klingon subtitles :)
It's not super obvious, but I've actually changed characters here. The water bird ability activates on opponents turns which is why they activate then. You'll notice our forest bird is an Eastern Phoebe vs the forest bird of the yellow player (with the 2 new eggs) which is a Mountain Chickadee.
At 1:36:32, you can’t place that egg on that bird. As your commentary at the time mentions, you have a ton of empty spots, so it doesn’t really affect anything.
Yeah, I was a bit too cavalier about egg placement in general for this playthrough. I wish I'd paid a bit more attention there, especially considering the Blue players hidden goal card.
It looks like this was pointed out before and there is a correction about this in the Klingon subtitles already. Feel free to turn those on so that you can see the corrections I put into these videos.
@@JonGetsGames Thank you for posting this btw. I havent had a chance to play the game yet, and I thought it was going to be a bit of a pain to explain, but it definitely isn't. This has quickly become one of my favourite board game channels.

Yeah unfortunately I messed that up. Someone mentioned that already and I have a correction about it that you can see if you turn the Klingon subtitles :)
Isn't golden eagle ability is predator so the vulture ability should trigger?
It is a predator, but the vulture only activates on other players turns not on your own.
Jon were you a teacher in a previous life? Great instructional presentation
Nope, never served as a teacher in any professional capacity. I've just taught hundreds of games over the last 13 years and that practice helps.
Why at 33:53 you lay 2 eggs on that top Forest bird than one dissapear when triggering the water bird ability.
It's not super obvious, but I've actually changed characters here. The water bird ability activates on opponents turns which is why they activate then. You'll notice our forest bird is an Eastern Phoebe vs the forest bird of the yellow player (with the 2 new eggs) which is a Mountain Chickadee.

At 33:09 you repeat yourself when reading the action on the card.
Ha, oops. I'm surprised that I miss things that that sometimes. Fortunately it's not too confusing to watch I think.
When you play a bird that doesn’t cost food, don’t you still need to pay the egg cost?
at 55:47 you say roll all dice in the birdfeeder when the card shows roll all dice NOT in the birdfeeder it can make a lot of difference.
Yeah I think I misspoke. Do I end up performing it incorrectly later?
Purple player got 99, not 89 points. So it wasn’t actually that close.
It looks like this was pointed out before and there is a correction about this in the Klingon subtitles already. Feel free to turn those on so that you can see the corrections I put into these videos.
70% of the fun I had in this game was building the dice tower.
how about solo
Unfortunately I am never particularly interested in board gaming solo, so I have no experience with it in Wingspan.
No Klingon option in the subtitles..
