Smarter Duplicating in REAPER

- I’ve always been frustrated with how duplicating works in REAPER. You need to have 3 different actions to cover all situations, when it could just be a single key that is smart enough to perform the right action depending on context.
An item is selected - duplicate the item
Part of an item is selected (time selection)- duplicate part of the item
Razor edit area - duplicate area
Track selected - duplicate the track
I complained about this on Twitter and Aaron Cendan immediately got to work making the perfect single action to cover all duplicating needs. Items, items in time selections, razor edits, and tracks.
Install the script through ReaPack
Get Aaron’s ReaPack repository
reapack.com/repos
The package is called “REAPER Blog Smart Duplicate”
In the action list find the script “Script: acendan_reaperblog_Duplicate items or tracks depending on focus and time selection.lua”
Assign to ctrl/cmd-D
There’s even some additional options inside the script to tweak for my preference, Aaron’s, or your own:
Move edit cursor to start of duplicated items true/false
Horizontal scroll to duplicated items true/false
Duplicate area of item that overlaps the time selection true/false
Duplicate tracks in alternating fashion true/false
I can’t tell you enough how wonderful it is to not have to guess if duplicate is going to do the right thing or not when I’m working on a song.
Bonus custom action - Clone/duplicate track without media
Track: Duplicate tracks
Item: Select all items in track
Item: Remove items

As a suggestion/hope/public begging (😅)……… this would be even more amazing if it would work on the selected region of a closed/collapsed folder.
Ex: I have background vocal stacks in and each harmonic part is in a folder. I’d like to be able to duplicate the whole section without having to open the folder.

Oh thank you and Aaron Cendan so much. Since more or less switching from Ableton to REAPER, I've been annoyed that I couldn't duplicate things the same way I did in Ableton, and now this fixes that!

Nice! I've needed this feature in Reaper for arranging samples for beats for awhile! Reaper is still urinating all over other DAWs with its features!

I've been using "duplicate selected items in time selection" with a separate keyboard shortcut (ctrl+shift+d) for ages and got used to it but i understand that you'd want to have it all in a single shortcut.
it's always nice that you can improve your workflow even more in reaper.

Love it, Jon, and thank you Aaron! Jon if you could have Aaron add the duplicate time selection feature that would be perfect. I know you can do it with Razor edits, but it would be a couple extra steps not to take and would add to the efficiently of this script. The script also frees up some key commands for me so seriously, Kudos on this!

I stopped using duplicate because it was a mess for me. Now I'm gonna use it all the time again, thanks to your script, Aaron. Amazing! Also, I use Script: me2beats_Duplicate tracks without items for duplicating tacks without media. I use it all the time as well. Not sure if it exactly the same, but it does the work for me.

Love it. This is all the best dupe behavior form different DAWs I've used in 1 key. And the custom actions is great too, definitely using that.

certainly a cool start to improve the duplicate, a shame you didn't look into the midi editor at all... If I only select 1 note and duplicate it, it just adds it 1/4 after. The selection it seems to accept it seems. If you guys could also improve this bit, that'd be amazing.
Pretty sure the default 'duplicate events' repeats it in the next measure. Useful but unexpected result.
there are several scipts for duplicating in the MIDI editor already (birdbird, mpl, me2beats) but none work with time selections as I expect. Should shorter notes be repeated immediately after or snap start to next grid line?
Usually I use this custom action but not perfect for all situations.
Custom: MIDI Duplicate
Edit: Copy
Navigate: Move edit cursor to end of selected events in active MIDI media item
Edit: Paste

Hi there, I am using Vital Synth to create sounds and when I duplicate the item or copy and glue them, the sound stops and starts over again, in the joint of the items. Is there any way around this so I can continue using my synth's envelope and force it to recognize the signal as one and not separate ones? Thanks

This is absolutly amazing and i think it should be the default in Repaer!!!! Although I found little bit of a bug. It's when I marque select items and want to duplicate them. It seems that the positioning of the duplicate is dependent on the track selection: lets say i have 4 items across 4 tracks tracks directly above each other (same timing and lenght) and then marque select the items on Track 2 and 3 (without time selection and with Track 1 selected) and then duplicate them. It will duplicate the items and put them on different tracks then they were originally. (starting at the selected track: Track 1) is there a way in Reaper to change the Track selection based on Marque selection?
Otherwise as I said, perfect script.
Except the channel duplicate which does it like other DAWs, I don't really understand what I am missing if I just use Razor edit?
razor basically does the same as "Item: Duplicate selected area of items". I don't use razor for every selection like with single items.

After duplicate run:
SWS/S&M: Remove track grouping for selected tracks
and SWS/S&M: Set selected tracks to first unused group (default flags)
@@TheREAPERBlog The default flags are a total buzzkill. What I ended up FRing was a marquee/copy/paste feature on the various Matrix windows, including Grouping Matrix.

Why were you even still using time selection? Just use razor for everything? I do.
Razor doesn’t set loop points. Razors are special occasion thing. You can see that just looking at me lol

EDIT followed by copy loop points to time selection, and Xenakios/SWS: Remove time selection (leave loop selection) . Make a custom action. But do not call it "razor loop" as i own the rights.
Hi there, I got V1.4 of the script, it works well except for the "duplicate at time selection" part, as explained in the video at 6:21 , I checked the changelog and it's been added since V1.1, so it should work. Did I miss something ? Thx a lot !
AR, you have to edit the script to allow that, as shown at 7:44 there's another option called "Duplicate area of item that overlaps the time selection (default = false)". Set this to "True" and it's on. Thx a lot for the script...!!!
May I have one request for this action? When I use the duplication by razor editing, it doesnt do the horizontal scroll (as in the case of time selection) - it would be nice if it scrolled even with razor edits.

It'd be nice if there was an inbuilt function to duplicate tracks without media. The custom action works well enough but undoing requires three Ctrl-Z's.
did you consolidate Undo for the custom action?

Hello, I am stuck in a DAW conundrum I'm on FL STudio and I'm consider reaper but the way other people are describing it to newbies is like watching Paint peel. there is too many steps. I just want to install turn it on and I play whatever I want. I haven't recorded anything in a month and that last FL Update through me off and I can't get tech support to guide me
although Ive been doing this for 10 years I'm getting to the point I just want to work and not figure out the tedium of unnecessary configurations
I can’t think of any software that works that way! Especially creative workspace ones like DAWs, Photoshop, video editors, etc.
But! That’s not to say some aren’t easier or faster than others. I find Reaper very fast. Give it a REAL try for a week or so, if it’s not your vibe, move on to something else. A week lost is better than 10 years wandering! Good luck.

btw, an amazing option in the midi editor to have would be to duplicate the object based on what time selection one has chosen. I use an MPL script to scroll-wheel change my time signature. If I then select a note, it should add it at the next possible position based on the time signature. If I have grid 1 selected and I have one bar of midi item, It would result in 4 notes. But If I have 1/4 selected and would duplicate a note, it would result in 16 notes total in 1 bar. I hope this makes sense ;)
It's in Reaper already. You just use copy/paste. Hold shift while copying to include the silence in your time selection
This whole video could've been avoided had Jon just realized that duplicate in Reaper works by copy and pasting. Use shift plus copy hotkey when you use a time selection and then use the paste button to copy it. Not that difficult. No need for a whole script.

you need to mark the script for install then synchronise. Or set ReaPack to auto install.

You're not doing it right. Make a time selection and hold shift while you hit the copy hotkey. Then just use the paste hot key and reaper will include the silence in the time selection.

I never use Duplicate. I use plain Copy/Paste.
