    "Humans don't like werewolves. Wolves don't like werewolves. People don't like wolves that can think like people and people don't like people who can act like wolves. Which just shows people are the same everywhere, even when they're wolves."- Terry Pratchett 'The Fifth Elephant'

      Sekhmet is an Egyptian God who is depicted as a lioness who drank blood. That's probably his inspiration

    • @louisvictor3473
      @louisvictor3473 2 года назад +51

      @@SjofnBM1989 I think they are basically a perversion of her. Sehkmet is basically Hathor's enraged form (Hathor is usually depicted more human-esque) originally at humanity's wrong doing but she goes out of control and Ra needs to trick her into getting very drunk, chilling out and going back to normal. Hathor is herself a solar goddess (and a goddess of sexuality, she has a ton of children with various gods), and in Sekhmet form she is said to breath fire. So the vampires shapeshifting between werefeline and human forms, drinking symbolically innocent or pure "life force", as well as being very sexually active but apparently being not that good at reproducing, it is all like a mockery of her one night stand with unwielding rage. This also probably explains why cat attacks can cause them to combust, as they're basically acting as a much more tame and controlled avatar or conduit for her and her righteous vengeance - she is just showing the wannabes how it is really done.

    Cats in King’s universe are almost like supernatural agents, sometimes like guardian angels for the humans they love. They have psychic powers, see things we don’t see, and have both an ancient wisdom and a ferocity that belies their fuzzy shape.
    King loves cats and has/has had pet cats in real life. He was also heavily influenced by Lovecraft (as someone else mentioned below), who felt about the same way about cats. It probably seemed obvious to him that cats would be the ones who would both spot and fight the monsters, and the fact that sleepwalkers sort of resemble cats was just an extra element of their grudge match.
    On top of that, there is an old superstition that cats can fatally steal humans’ breath while they’re sleeping (particularly babies). The fact that this is sort of what sleepwalkers do to their victims in the movie, and cats do not, might be intended to hint at an age-old antagonism between them, where the cats have a long history of maintains their guard against and protecting the humans from the real breath-stealers (this theme was also used in Cat’s Eye; the main feline character, General, is also a really good example of the cat-as-guardian-angel theme).

      Ah, that would be one of the many things that Stephen King "borrowed" from H.P. Lovecraft - see "The Cats of Ulthar" and "The Dram-Quest of Unknown Kadath", among others.
      For that matter, I can't be the only one to detect a suspicious similarity between this movie, and the remake of "Cat People" from a few years earlier. In-cessed Enthusiast Cat People Vampires? Check, check, check.... "Cat People (1982)" wasn't a great movie by any means, but almost looked dignified compared to this hilarious mess! :D
      For a more respectable fix for your Cat People craving, go for Val Lewton and Jaques Tourniers' original 1942 noir-horror classic "Cat People" instead. And, while you're there, might as well check out its sequel, "Curse of the Cat People", as well - it's a very different sort of movie, more of a dark urban fantasy or fairy tale than the original movie's tense psychological horror, but if you accept the sequel on its own peculiar terms, it's a neat little gem of a movie in its own right.

    At a guess, the reason why cats are the enemies of the sleepwalkers is HP Lovecraft, who loved cats and used them in more than one story as being the enemies of otherworldly forces, most notably in "The Cats of Ulthar." King is highly influenced by Lovecraft. The cats of Ulthar can do most of what happens in Sleepwalkers, including a swarm of cats finishing otherworldly monsters off. I mean, this is a poorly done "The Cats of Ulthar."

    My favorite Stephen King story is Silver Bullet. He wrote the original novella and wrote the screenplay adaptation. I have spent an exorbitant amount of time deep diving into the history and behind the scenes of both the story and the movie.

    Rather than IT, the sleepwalkers seem to be nearly equivalent to the True Knot in Dr Sleep. They appear to be somewhat related to Kings vampires in that Rose The Hat exhibits a similar singular fang like his vamp from the short story "The Night Flier". Whereas these seem to be "Were-cat" versions rather than vampire versions.

    The Dimming thing appears in a few other King works such as Eyes of the Dragon and The Talisman, and it works the same way. This movie freaked me out as a kid and I can't hear a steel guitar without thinking of it. The cat attack finale is glorious though. My theory is that some ancient cats made a deal with some demons for this power and so normal cats resent them for it. I dunno, best I got. It's all just magic, and it's got unexplained rules. Also I think the tagline is referring to the fear of the audience members, not anyone in the story. It's talking to you as you read the box.

      @@LisatheWeirdo That is not how I would describe the events of that short story. The cats were used by people to exact revenge, but they themselves didn't do anything of their own volition.
      I'm saying that cats were jealous of humans and bargained with demons for a way to become more human, and thus created the Sleepwalkers, and the remaining normal cats because their natural enemy.

    OK, just a note, turns out there's a lion faced Egyption Godess called Sekhmet who may be considered the world's first vampire. Although she did a lot more then these two. Ra sent her to deal with any mortals conspiring against him and she got a taste for blood. So after nearly emptying Egypt, he decided probably needed to do something about her so he poured red dyed alcohol into the Nile. Having turned the river red, she finds it had a drink, thinking it blood and passes out. After she wakes up calmer and probably a wicked hangover, she agrees to go home, do not pass go and don't collect 200 pints of blood to go.
