I never got this scene. It's so heartbreaking how he reacts to the hero and strong protecting the weak comments, how he waited so long to be saved by someone, anyone, yet noone did. He sounds so bitter and defeated about how the heroes let him rot, despite noone actually knowing what Cazador was up to in his manor.

6:37 He got himself so angry :D Strange, he started off so damn happy and bubbly, and then just ruined his own mood.
Funny, he said somewhere 'he doesn't want to talk about Cazador but that won't help anyone' [so he has to tell you]. But he seems to actually want to bring him up every time. It's confirmed, Astarion needs therapy.. er I mean, a healer.

I still can't believe that the guy who wanted me to tell Ethel everything thinks he is in any position to give me life advice :D I'm pretty sure you were a slave for two centuries because of your own choices, baby. On a more serious note, he is so singleminded and ignoring inconvinient truthts that I have to remember other scenes to remind myself he's more than just a guy who only wants to replace Cazador and somehow thinks I'm stupid enough to help him with that.

You're right I think. Also on him being more/maybe better than he sometimes seems. Actually, even here, there are some parts where he seems genuinely pained and pissed off at the unjustness of the world (and not only regarding his not being saved), and that the heroes/the strong are doing a piss poor job. Which would suggest he still has some sense of justice left?..
Fine, he probably won't be out there righting wrongs in the future either, but perhaps could be convinced not to make the world worse. Aka "whatever the hell I want" might not turn out to be torture and killing and the like, just chilling and enjoying his newly achieved freedom and safety.
Considering he's (rightfully) obsessed with Cazador and the death thereof, he can't think of anything else he wants now, but once that's done, maybe he will actually chill out without becoming Cazador 2.0... though I'd keep him a spawn over making him a vampire lord, just in case. :)

@@susankreber Well, what you mentioned is actually my dream ending for him. He can't ever forget what happened to him but he can at least make happier memories now. I'd prefer to see him embracing the side of him that is bold and enjoys good things in life. I don't need him to pet bunnies. Cazador certainly won't be final boss and I can imagine Astarion having pretty gloom episode when we kill Caz - including "mere vampire spawn forever" despair followed by the decision to stick with the Absolute for more power.

@@svoba4af Yes, I suspected that'd be your preferred ending too (based on some of your other comments I vaguely recall on YT we often have similar opinions on him:)
It'd be a hard ride though, I think, at least if the devs do think about the psychological repercussions, because:
If it comes to it that a choice has to be made about this, and 1) HE gets to decide, he sure as hell will take the sip to become a lord, because 'more power equals more safety' etc, so from his point of view, why would he give up any potential power?
      2) If WE can decide whether to leave the choice to him or make the choice ourselves, then if we leave it to him, see point 1; and if we don't leave it to him AND ensure he remains a spawn instead, he'll hate us for the rest of our lives. And, like you said, this might cause him to betray us and side with the Absolute, becoming yet another puppet.
I mean, even with exceptional approval topped with a romance route, I can't imagine he won't at least secretly (if not openly) resent us at least. In his mind, he could've become a lord and be safe and comfy, and instead, he'll remain a creature who could easily be taken down at any point by a few skilled monster hunters OR at least 4-5 random adventurers, or even just a good number of peasants with pitchforks. That thought has got to sting... Like he'd said, all the disadvantages of being a vampire (losing the sun again, being hunted like a monster, etc), with not many of its benefits.
From the current point in the game, he'll have to have a hell of a lot of character development to make the choice to remain a spawn himself, or at least not resent us for it if we do. Perhaps it'll depend on whether the Absolute main quest gets resolved first and his personal one later. That'd give him enough time for character development and bonding. But I doubt the main quest'll get resolved before the side ones; there's already news that soon the area will be Baldur's Gate, and Cazador will be encountered then; so, way before the Absolute shenanigans end.

@@susankreber Aww, nice to see you remember my comments :D The paths are not endless, to be honest. In case we kill Cazador the first time we meet, the scenario of Astarion doing his own thing will follow regardless of your relationship. And it will end up badly for him. I remember there were some digged dialogue tidbits which hinted we Will be able to side with Caz against the Absolute - again, Astarion's reaction would trigger the antagonistic scenario. Well, I'm convinced most endings planed for him simply are all sorts of violent. It's okay, that's not canon for my playthrough. The bigger question is how well he can fare against Tav and company. In case you betray him to Gandrel and then you just meet him again and kill him like any other average boss... Well, that would be embarassing. As for the psychology, his writer is good but still, this is DnD game. Many things will only be hinted at, lets be real here.

He didn't choose enslavement. His choice was bleeding out after a physical assault, on some dirty street of Baldur's Gate or take his chances and be turned by a full vampire. He chose the option with some long term potential. He was being smart.
