Without consistency our talent means nothing
When I was at university studying fine art I asked my tutor "whats the difference between an amateur and a professional artist". He said " an an amateur artist paints when he feels inspired, a professional like me has to paint whether he feels like it or not, the galleries are waiting".
I would reccomend the War of Art to anyone, it's easy to read and understand, and it's the best book about beating procrastination I have ever read.

I am on day 408 of a self-prescribed daily songwriting/live-streamed challenge, the end goal being 500 days straight. Back when I started (1/1/18), definitely marked the end of my Hero’s Journey and the beginning of me embracing my Songwriting Journey.

YASSS to managing emotions, expectations, etc. Self-discipline is the real skill to develop. It was (is 😆) the hardest thing for me, but practicing and mastering it has been the key to my success in every area of life - business, marriage, health, all of it.
I am writing my first romance-murder mystery and am 25,000 words in. He is right about the inner voices that will tell you even to throw the work out even. The two definitions of resistance he gave were very helpful--the resistance that helps creative process, and the one that doesn't. Also, my life has changed dramatically so I think I am in the pro stage but having to balance that with get it out there. I have two small books out there now, and have finished work on a writing with power sentence book that I am going to put up for sale. Thank you for a few ah-ah moments. I am starting the grind of getting the work out there. Thank you for your insights on the authors journey. During the first novelette for kids, I had a note above my desk that said "Sit bum in chair." lol
That’s right - I know this thread is old but this topic will never die and Pressfield’s work is something I always comae back to.
Just a minor point of clarification of terms, because as we get more used to speaking about this topic the language matters. He calls the voice(s) Resistance
What we call the small still voice is ourself and that’s a major difference. Our inner voice can be trusted, fear (Resistance) cannot be trusted.
Bob Marley’s last public words were “Everyone has a voice inside talking to them, listen to the voice and you will know what to do”
It’s imperative we learn to distinguish the two voices (or many, depending on what you believe)
If we trust ourself we will hear the voice of inspiration. And we’ll be better able to hear and manage/ignore the voice of fear/Resistance

I chose to turn pro and not show up as lazy-ass Salma who does things when she feels like it, but as a professional who's invested in her brand and is accountable to her audience. You're so right! Small victories, especially when such minor goals feel so inaccessible, are valid and important. Take and celebrate baby steps in the direction of larger goals and be kind to ourselves. After all, breaking down and rejoicing in the accumulative small components which comprise larger goals can be a critical component toward achieving them

I listened to this interview with Mr Pressfield after listening to another interview with him (played yours with auto play). Yours included an invite to write a comment (the other did not).
It truly felt like he was (and you were) speaking directly to me.
I think I share something very similar in experience. It took him 30 years to get his break. I've been at what I've been doing for over 35 years (but still haven't gotten my break, but working on it),. Hearing that touched me and made my soul smile.
I'm a writer/illustrator of my own graphic novels, with the intent to have them adapted into tv/film projects (almost a standard business model today). It's been a looooong road, but hopefully the law of averages will soon be on my side.
Listening to this came at a very poignant time and feel I can identify with him in many ways. It was very, very encouraging.
Thank you again, Marie Forleo. I've listened to your youtube videos many times. What you're doing is great.

Wow his reading part! Outstanding! The biggest insight as a late off the heros journey musician, is how to be a pro and that can mean different things at different phases. Right now it means piano and vocals EVERY DAY.

Marie, Marie! I'm not even 20 minutes in and I'm hearing so many nuggets of wisdom. Wow! This one will be on repeat!
The biggest insight I'm taking away from this conversation is that the artists journey comes AFTER the hero's journey. I'm 24 & I don't feel like I've been through the hero's journey. That of course, could be resistance talking. I can put this into action right now by getting into contact with the friend who's journey inspires me most & asking him what I should do next
You can do what you want if you just work. It's all up to you, just rearrange, commit, drive forward. Follow your crazy hearter's heart.
I am in my head so much that, when it comes to planning out a new project, I overthink it to the point of inactivity. I will get so detailed that it overwhelms me and I end up paralyzed. The point that the entire outline of a novel fits onto a standard size piece of paper really hit me. Instead of trying to work out every tiny detail, taking more of a bird's-eye view of the project and "boiling it down to the essentials" allows me to see it at a size that I believe I can accomplish. Great insight!

The most significant insight I'm taking away from this conversation is that I am a pro of things I love to do the most. I care less about when the is an end. I keep working and showing up for what really matters in this lifetime. Following my heart instate of listening to my head all the time. I can write for 25 mins per day without a single day off; and without judgment. I don't care what I am going write, I. do it because I love it!
At around the 14:40 mark, when Mr. P talks about how the villainy of Resistance gives meaning to the creator, it reminds me of that powerful line from Starship Troopers: "Something given has no value." And it's true! We must earn it, by the sweat of our brow, the blood of our wounds, and the screaming of our souls. Love watching these interviews. Mr. P changed my life with his writing. I thank God for him all the time.

Steven Pressfield is full of gifts and beauty. My biggest insight is about talking to myself as a pro instead of an amateur. I am writing my first book and have been working on a novel. There are so many times I question if I'm good enough etc. This conversation really helped me understand how common this way of thinking is, and that we all have the power within ourselves to move through resistance. And I am going to begin by writing on a more regular basis starting with each morning. Rituals make our lives! X

Hi Marie. I just listened to you in your interview with writer Steven Pressfield, which was delightful. As a visual artist and writer, I enjoyed the conversation " Overcoming Resistance and Why Talent Doesn't Mater". Steven and you reminded me about why it is so important to self-validation, gratification, my own journey, and the paths of resistance which are not always predictable.
The message Steven spoke about "Are you a Pro? or an Amateur?" was profound. I still need to be patient and consider the resistance from the world around me. Interestingly, I find the issues in this conversation give me some appreciation for where I am now. I have only been writing memoirs for the past four years that speak about my personal journey. I will take the knowledge and understanding both you and Steven have brought forward in this interview and bring what I consider to be my gift. Now, as an international visual artist, I am taking my step forward while collaborating with another writer by establishing poetry with the paintings I've created. This has been a journey for both my friend and me. I have been inspired by You, and Steven, who is a wonderful writer, and a Pro.

Very very powerful interview with a humble and brilliant man. I get those voices 24/7. And, let’s face it often the voice is real. It says ‘what do you think you’re doing? Who do you think you are?’ Having some kind of work to pay bills is how I manage. But people like Gauguin or Bukowski just walked out. But they were geniuses and unstoppable
This is such a great interview - Really happy I came across this. Pressfield is extremely relatable and you can tell he made himself great through sheer hustle and determination to the craft. He speaks through his experience of the vulnerability/pain/doubt during the creative process and he's genuine in regards to his advice instead of speaking vague platitudes that other experts preach.

Mine is having to know everything. Over studying and researching before I can get started, convincing myself i could have done it better but never arriving at that place of self approval. And the worse form is the roadblock the stop sign. A book I heard about from a guest on Oprah show called the war of art by Steven pressfield he explains that every time we try some new endeavour professionally or even a new diet or that new fitness regime etc we come against resistance. He said at the end of the day the only thing he asks himself isn’t did he do good enough, did he write enough or could he have done better. He said the only thing he asked himself is did he overcome resistance. This was fire for me. The war of art is a great read and a help for anyone experiencing this. Just my humble opinion but I loved it. He didn’t publish his first book until he was in his 50’s because of self doubt.

Amazing. Discovered Pressfield through Seth and just loved this interview. In particular I thought the conversation around 35:00 was super important. Getting into your audience's point of view isn't just important; it's the whole thing. I train this skill, which psychologists call perspective-taking, to people in so many different fields, and I'm finding it especially hits home for healthcare professionals these days. "Patient experience" is getting a lot of attention. But really, it's all the same thing. Whether you're a marketer, a writer, or a nurse: treat people how they wish to be treated, and do that be bridging the gap between your perspective and theirs.

Marie, thank you for being one of my inspirations, on daily basis for the last three months.I knew Steven as a writer-when a book of his gets in my hands I just dive in- till the very last page. I met him as a mentor, share his WISDOM and just loved it. For me, that came to the right time,I struggle with changing my habits from the ''amateur'' stage to the ''pro'' one.I'ts nice to know that others faced the same challenges and overcame them.
