- The Duchess of Kent was the British Royal face for many Wimbledon tournaments in the second half of the 20th Century until 2001.
Here (aged 84) she discusses Wimbledon and those famous moments with Jana Novotná, who sadly died last year (in 2017) of cancer, aged only 49.
I f you would like to know why she left in 2001 and boycotted Wimbledon, it was an incident in 1999, which you can read about here: royalcentral.co.uk/blogs/the-d...
Another reason to dislike elitism, something Katherine Kent (the Duchess of Kent), has never been. Whether she worked as Kate in soup kitchens or as Mrs Kent teaching children, she is one of the nicer, more approachable royals, who you might not have heard much about.
One of the most memorable and touching moment in sport history. They both Will be forever loved and remembered
The Duchess of Kent is a wonderful woman. It speaks volumes about her when she comforted Jana in such a tender manner after her loss. Such an elegant, beautiful woman, inside and out.
Lip reading, the Duchess says Oh - Don't cry! God bless them both and RIP Jana
It was a wonderful moment to comfort Novotna after a dramatic final.
Now that's a Duchess with real class!
I so agree!
2:21 you can see the Duchess say "so proud" i think? Lovely lady and miss her at Wimbledon. And Jana, what a great player you were! So happy when she won Wimbledon. RIP Jana.
Yes, I´m sure she said "I´m so proud of you"
Jana Novotna will always be a champion for all of us, who go thru lifes' ups and downs. I'm lucky to have witnessed a true champion of the sport and of life.
RIP Jana. Died far too young.
Jana Novotana was a greatsportsperson ever had. She was so dedidated towards her game that every player should learn. Her untimely heath is really a great loss to the world. I love her every action of the game .
She taught music in deprived schools in Yorkshire and it was not easy I’m sure. This lady has my undying admiration, she is quite simply warm, decent and genuine to her core
I remember this Wimbledon final in 93. Incredible match, very moving souvenir, and Jana being comforted by the duchess of Kent was so unique... Wonderful moment...
The lovely Duchess of Kent, such a lady. What a lovely moment with Jana Novotna!
My favourite Royal....a lovely and beautiful woman.
RIP Jana. A true champion.
When did she pass? Oh lord
What do you mean by RIP?
The Duchess of Kent is such a lovely lady. R.i.p Jana x
I remember both moments when Jana lost and then won 2 years later. The Duchess of Kent was so gracious both times. Such a lovely lady.
Here here ! 🙌
Jana won 5 years later, she lost again in the final in 97 which was 4 years after that final with Graf
Jana lost in two Wimbledon finals before finally winning in 1998. The Duchess of Kent comforted her both times. I remember watching all those finals with Jana Novotna. But Steffi won Wimbledon a lot...
Duchess of Kent is really amazing. What an humble person is.
I love this woman. So humble and down to earth despite her lineage
..."despite her lineage", as if that would make her something "high"
What do you mean by lineage? Her lineage is not that high. She is the daughter of a baronet. Of course, she then married a grandson of George V and into the royal family.
@@cush6827 Are you the daughter of a baronet too, then?
@@pneron2032 How would that matter?
@@cush6827 Well, you're acting like being a baronet's* daughter was no big deal. I can only assume that you hail from a loftier lineage
She’s such a sweet person. She’s also a primary school teacher
The Duchess proper legend, love her. Jana true champion. Lost, lost again then finally won it. That’s the best way to win it. True champ. RIP beautiful Novotna x
I miss seeing the beauty and cool of the Duchess coming out with her husband to present the trophy. But of course not before they both took care of something equally important to them, first shaking hands and talking with the ball girls and boys.
The Novotna moment was the most memorable of her trophy presentations. Jana was easily leading the match and seemingly moments away from a championship, when the great Graf came back from several games down to win. While the match was exciting, the Duchess caring for Jana was the moment of the tournament.
Terribly sad that Jana died last year, but wonderful that a few years after her loss to Graf, Jana was again in the final, and this time she won.
The Duchess is missed at the ceremony (I believe her husband now does it alone), but I hope she is healthy and doing well.
That's the way a duchess should be ❣️ god bless her always
Wonderful Lady,HRH. Duchess of Kent. Served this Country Well ..
The Duchess, a lovely lady
The Duchess has such beauty and grace. What a shining inspiration.
Truly beautiful in and out,,,
Terrible shame about Jana
I always loved it how she consoled Jana after her devastating 1993 final loss.
And of course how she kissed Steffi Graf in 1995 and 1996!!
Such a beautiful lady compaassionate humble and graceful and so real and relatable truly an inspiration love the duchess of Kent 💖🙏 served our country so well amazing lady 😊
Where was the Duchess of Kent on the Royal Family tree?
This woman Is a very great Lady
We are human Wonderful Details with wonderful Jana
What a lovely lady.
Beautiful
*A Class Act through and through*
what a wonderful lady!
R.I.P
"We became very firm friends". Ooh where's that video?
I would love to know too!
I love you, your royal highness Duchess Katharine.
I remember watching this and thought it humanized the royals a bit.Poor Jana. She was up against the German steamroller, Steffi Graf.Look at Graf's face... no sympathy, not a hint. Just steely German determination.Which is fine. Graf was a great champion.
With all due respect, I disagree about Graf. I see quiet respect in her face- and she joined the audience in applauding her vanquished foe.
Kathy Berg, I agree with you. I remember this match, as well Jana's victory. R.I.P
True! That's the only thing I didn't like of Graf. Though Graf is one of my all-time favourite player, I rooted for Jana. She deserved it but Thank God she won it at last!
She was a great player but not a great person!
@Illya Kuryakin She seemed like a cold person who never smiled until her win in the 1999 French Open.
