There is a double irony in his exit - earlier he had promised the same alligators as well as his long-suffering pet vulture Fido a "grand meal", meaning the good guys, but guess who ended up the meal? And it was courtesy of a tack, the hero's tack, which also was the cause of the destruction of his War Machine and the unraveling of his plans.
Earlier One eye had thrown him to the alligators and he was able to charm them, and in the version where Phido talks he says "And I'll eat the left overs" after One Eye has him dragged away.
True, but as Zig Zag pointed out, there's very little meat on him and I think his torso's bulk is all from stuff he's got in his robe. So it wasn't even a decent meal.
It really gets surreal when Phido the vulture actually spouts that same mouthful of teeth that the gators have, gapes as wide as real vultures can, and crunches down on Zigzag's head. That's a pretty creepy death right there, especially for an animated feature of the time. Apparently there's an animatic of Phido actually completing the bite and swallowing the head, which you see in the "Recobbled" version.
The fact that he kept on rhyming his sentences even when alligators were eating him alive and his own pet bird bit his skull so hard it cracked, is fucking traumatizing This is probably one of the most disturbing character deaths if you guys have some links to characters dying in disturbing ways feel free to send them

Zigzag was perhaps based on a character that Willams met, and suffered from (you investigate...). Precisely, this character is in a constant theatricalization, as the source of his inspiration. When he steps on a tack, the most theatrical thing is to be shocked; when he's being eaten alive, the most theatrical thing to do is follow through with his mock calm rhyming monologue. Always dramatizing, to thus have maximum attention... it was not by chance that Williams gave Zigzag that ending, perhaps he loved his muse little... You must think in terms of symbolic meanings, not literally... He resembles a greedy genius, also a lustful octopus that everything wants to possess. His rhyme is an invocation as a magic spell. From what I understand, the Shahs also made terroistic threats against Williams when he refused to give them 50% of the profits, causing Williams' poor opinion of them to get so intense that making Zigzag bearable enough to animate practically required Vincent Price to sign on as the voice.
More like Phido took his head off...if there was anything left for it to be connected to. The crocodiles apparently ate his bottom and his top. With him being such a strange being (blue, twelve fingers, extra joints) I wouldn't be too surprised if he could survive as little more than a head for a bit.

From what I understand, the Shahs also made terroistic threats against Williams when he refused to give them 50% of the profits, causing Williams' poor opinion of them to get so intense that making Zigzag bearable enough to animate practically required Vincent Price to sign on as the voice.

More like Phido took his head off...if there was anything left for it to be connected to. The crocodiles apparently ate his bottom and his top. With him being such a strange being (blue, twelve fingers, extra joints) I wouldn't be too surprised if he could survive as little more than a head for a bit.
