Wrapping the feral with plumbers tape totally works! I have a handyman business and I ran into a feral that I didn’t want to remove and it was leaking. My buddy who is a plumber told me to wrap it with plumbers tape, worked wonderfully! Great vid Leah
Hi, Leaha two things, thanks to you I tightened the compression nut and it stopped my water drip at the water supply line to my toilet that was dripping for a couple days. Also, I alone purchased and replaced my toilet. I tried to use a cheap snake from Harbor Frieght but it didn’t work for me that’s why I replaced the toilet. Love you you Leaha. And because of you I actually finished something I started !!!!!
OMG. my father in law has been trying to remove the cold water supply valve on my kitchen faucet for two hours. Banging, cussing, heavy breathing. He was cranking the rear but counter clockwise. After I held the front valve one quick clockwise crack in the rear and all good to go So glad I found this video. THANK YOU
I am a licensed master plumber and I use both pipe dope and Teflon tape together. Also pipe dope is used as a lubricant to allow for threaded pipe to get tighter. I use pipe dope for compression fittings as a lubricant so it’s not metal on metal grinding so much. PS I use my channel locks or handle puller tool to get old ferrules off copper. A used ferrule will usually leak even with Teflon
I watch another plumber on YT and he does the same thing using pipe dope with tape. Only he calls it "Fritz." He also puts pipe dope on the slip joints found with those cheesy drain pipes you thread together for sinks from the home improvement stores for the DYIers.

Another great and useful video. One tip I got from a Plummer for connections using rubber seal was not to over tighten joint as this would cause rubber to distort and create leak. Great advice considering many guys like to tighten the Cr#p out of any nut.
When I just bought my house about 4 years ago. I watched your video on changing the shut off valve for a washing machine. Your directions were very clear and straight forward. Thanks for sharing so much knowledge and helping me save some cash.
My problem was at 6:10. The new brass olive ring was loosing on the pipe, I also changed the plastic one but still the same. Thank you Leah! I've been upgrading my basement and part of that included moving the water heater, washer, and dryer and adding a slop sink. I've been using Teflon tape an any and all threads for a couple of years now, without knowing why or when it should actually be used. I also figured out I was using the wrong fitting to screw my washer faucets into.
Excellent camera work and a well-organized narrative. "Bonus" at 6:05 is especially helpful for ferrules which no longer seal effectively. Here is my own bonus tip-- surprisingly often, wrapping pipe threads with Teflon/plumber's tape, first, THEN coating the Teflon-wrapped pipe threads with pipe joint compound is the final solution. This tip comes from several experienced plumbers (who said they seldom had to repair their previous work).

Just had to change a shower and repair a hole in a water pipe using both compression fittings on old valve and push fitting on the new pipes and patch.
Thank You! Yesterday was the first time I ever replaced a water compression valve (for my toilet). Unfortunately, it had a VERY slow but annoying leak from behind the compression nut. Per your idea, I wrapped teflon tape around the ferrule before re-connecting compression nut to valve. It worked! Not even a damp spot to feel. You saved me a sleepless night and a call to the plumber.
I've replaced a good number of shut-off valves before but I've just run into a situation where I'm getting a similar leak on one (out of four) that I just replaced and I can't get it to go away. I'm going to try and out now and see if it works!

Much love for the sealing up of an old ferrel trick. There has been many occasions where copper pipe coming out of wall is too short to cut and redo and in addition old ring has really embedded itself in pipe. Great trick!!! Happy Thanksgiving Leah and everyone else!!!
If you stuck all the way to the end, you saw Leah use plumber's tape around the ferril? (sp) to stop small leaks. Great idea to try if you have that problem. I actually had that problem (could not remove the ring, could not replace the copper pipe easily as it was very short sticking out of the wall, so I went to the trusty RUclips and found that using pipe joint compound around the ring would work, and IT DID. So that's another option for you.

What advice to you have about tightening the connection? I'm sure there's a correct way to know that the connection is made tight enough so you're not worrying if it is going to leak because either too loose (and it may seem fine in the beginning but will start leaking over time) or worse: over-tightened that you mess up the compression fitting and/or strip the threads -- obvious that's wrong too. We have a product in the UK called LSX. it's a clear sealant that comes In tubes similar in size to the two you showed. I find in prudent to add a smear around the olive or on the thread of every compression join as an extra safeguard against leaks.
Thank you for verifying tapered pipe threads doesn't seal without teflon..also on my 2004 mustang gt the transmission drain and filler plugs are tapered pipe thread..I've notice alot of people don't put teflon on the plugs..they think just because it tightens it seals automatically..I've replaced these plugs back in the day and when opening the package from Ford it had pipe thread sealant on it..so yes we use teflon in the automotive racing industry and in the home..thank you jane.
Leah, please add the bonus tip on your video about supply valve replacement. I actually encountered a leak on a ferrule when I was replacing a supply valve. It would have been handy to know this tip. In my case removing the old ferrule narrowed the pipe so that the new one did not fit snugly. I finally went back and used the old ferrule, but it would have been nice to know how I could have used the new one with some plumbers tape. At the time I watched your video on replacing supply valves which is why I recommend adding the bonus tip to it
Never seen the teflon over the ferrule like that...but have had those small drips that develop over a day's time when you go back for a followup look...I may try this, Thanks!

nice tip about old ferrels - I didn't know about that but was able to tighten my connection enough to stop a small drip using a ferrel I couldn't remove anyway
The last tip was awesome, I bought a new shut of valve for the sink, and the new ferrule it came with wouldn't seal it, I guess the copper pipe become slightly bent when I removed the old valve or when I smoothed the pipes surface. I spent the whole day figuring out what to do for a quick fix, I watched this video and I tried wrapping it many times with teflon tape, but it finally worked when I wrapped it all the way down to the end of the copper pipe.

This is brilliant. I hope you do one for when to use plumber's putty - I just spent a week attempting to install a tap and drain assembly with (a) the flimsy washers that came with it, (b) the washers from the old drain (which had putty on them as well because my dad couldn't get that one to seal) and (c) plumber's putty. I also removed the p-trap and sanded out the abs pipe so the new drain pipe would fit more easily. I can now change the whole thing out in 15 minutes flat. But I ended up having to reinstall the old broken pop-up drain because the new one was so poorly toleranced I couldn't get it to seal with any combination of methods. Lessons learned: 1. buy name brand 2. read negative reviews to see what the worst that could happen is (if it's discontinued, there could be a problem there) 3. have a bucket handy :-) 4. plumber's putty is pretty cool, but I still don't know how to make the finished job look nice.
Work for me as well! I couldn't get the ferrule off, and it still leaked after replacing the new stop valve. Pretty happy to see someone gave this advice; most plumbers would say it's useless!!, it's really working!

Always on a 5/8 compression we put a little rectocele Number 5 on the rim of the valve. This provides a little lubricant for the farrell to seat properly. The rectoseal doesn't make the seal it's still a compression fitting it just provides a little lubricant so the farrell seats properly the first time.
Great tips Ms. Leah. Pipe thread compound can get really messy? In my case, it is more like if you use the compound you will keep finding smudges of it all over your body for DAYS.... on your ankle, behind your ears, under your ring... hahaha. Seriously, it really seals well and really useful when you have to reach to install a fitting and it would be really difficult if not I'm possible to use Teflon tape. ☺

The water supply line with gasket is not always water tight. Plumbers tape is required most times. Especially in South Africa. Thank You. Love your posts.
I worked with a verrry good plumber and he always used both pipe dope and thread tape . 3-5 times around it . I've often used both too , but if I get lazy I use one . Depends . I'm here because I tend to get rusty ( memory ) and need to refresh it . It helps to reactivate what I already know .. Yeah been in construction most of my adult life . Semi skilled in a few areas
You can use joint compound on the olive but only a tiny bit is needed if you do, don’t overtighten. If I’m in a Teflon tape situation on other fittings I use the tape and the joint compound together. All the plumbers I know follow those advice too.
I sort of grade previous plumbers in my head when I find Teflon tape wrapped around a flare fitting such as one a gas appliance- wrong , no sealant needed on a 45degree flare fitting,on the flared end
Something I learned the hard way: be careful to not use tape on a NEW compression fitting, sometimes the tape can bunch up, or get in the way of the ferrule seal itself and cause a leak/drip.

Two plumbers cannot figure out why my dual shut off valve (under kitchen sink) connected to a copper pipe (in wall) keeps leaking. Out of $200 and still have leaks. Ugh!!!! Next plan - go after their Contractor's license if they don't make good on their work. So exhausting.
I used to work occasionally on fluid de-ice systems for aircraft, and they called the ferrules 'olives'! I never knew it was a British thing, but the company is based there! Now I get it!

I noticed my plumber used some kind of blue goop to attach pipe ("nipple") to water supply valve... Anyone know what that would be?
@@athenahill8788i just used some. It has PFTE, teflon in it to help the threads move more smoothly as the 2 parts are threaded together.

Thank you. I never knew when to use plumbers tape so I use it on every valve or pipe I have to put together.
I use PERMATEX FORM A GASKET on pipe fittings. Never leaks. Use the non hardening one. Buy it at auto supply stores. Swear by it!

6:08 I used this technique for a late night emergency yesterday, bc I watched this video years ago and remembered.

Thanks for this very informative video. I have an installation I will be doing soon where the instructions specifically state NOT to use the Teflon tape on the threads and I didn't know why. Now I do :)

Always remember to wrap the plumbers tape on clockwise, otherwise it will unwrap itself....and that ain't good!

Always on a 5/8 compression we put a little rectocele Number 5 on the rim of the valve. This provides a little lubricant for the farrell to seat properly. The rectoseal doesn't make the seal it's still a compression fitting it just provides a little lubricant so the farrell seats properly the first time.
Great tips Ms. Leah. Pipe thread compound can get really messy? In my case, it is more like if you use the compound you will keep finding smudges of it all over your body for DAYS.... on your ankle, behind your ears, under your ring... hahaha. Seriously, it really seals well and really useful when you have to reach to install a fitting and it would be really difficult if not I'm possible to use Teflon tape. ☺

The water supply line with gasket is not always water tight. Plumbers tape is required most times. Especially in South Africa. Thank You. Love your posts.

I worked with a verrry good plumber and he always used both pipe dope and thread tape . 3-5 times around it . I've often used both too , but if I get lazy I use one . Depends . I'm here because I tend to get rusty ( memory ) and need to refresh it . It helps to reactivate what I already know .. Yeah been in construction most of my adult life . Semi skilled in a few areas

You can use joint compound on the olive but only a tiny bit is needed if you do, don’t overtighten. If I’m in a Teflon tape situation on other fittings I use the tape and the joint compound together. All the plumbers I know follow those advice too.

I sort of grade previous plumbers in my head when I find Teflon tape wrapped around a flare fitting such as one a gas appliance- wrong , no sealant needed on a 45degree flare fitting,on the flared end
In Canada, I've heard the ferrule in a compression fitting called both a furl and an olive. I've never heard them called ferals before this video.

Something I learned the hard way: be careful to not use tape on a NEW compression fitting, sometimes the tape can bunch up, or get in the way of the ferrule seal itself and cause a leak/drip.

Thank you, very informative. Do you know of any women plumbers in Sacramento California? Two plumbers cannot figure out why my dual shut off valve (under kitchen sink) connected to a copper pipe (in wall) keeps leaking. Out of $200 and still have leaks. Ugh!!!! Next plan - go after their Contractor's license if they don't make good on their work. So exhausting.

I used to work occasionally on fluid de-ice systems for aircraft, and they called the ferrules 'olives'! I never knew it was a British thing, but the company is based there! Now I get it!
