    I’m left handed, and all it took was one look at you wrapping the tape for me to get it without going nuts! Thank you! It’s hard for me to “translate” from right handed to left in many situations.

  • @oobaka1967
    @oobaka1967 8 лет назад +25

    Instead of clockwise / counterclockwise, I find the easiest way to show me the direction is to thread the tape in the same direction as the nut or fitting will attach.
    Either way, a very good tip to help the average person stop a leak.

    It never gets old! Great demonstration at 3:40 of what goes wrong when you don't wrap CW. Few actually show the backed off or bunched up tape when they do their video of applying PTFE aka thread seal tape.

    Thank you. This is the second time I've watched this video. First time i watched it when i had to fix my toilet water supply valve which i did great cause of your tutorial, but its been awhile since i've had to fix another valve. This time for my kitchen sink's water supply valve so i had forgot how to do this and I did it wrong then i remembered Leah has my back so i found your video again and fixed it right this time. As usual Mizz Leah. You are amazing. You make life easier and affordable for us plumbing inexperienced Neanderthals. Thank you and Happy New Year!

    Always with the direction that the fitting twists on then? Wrap the tape clockwise and screw on the nut clockwise. Is that right?

    Another spot on video by Leah. Word of caution though after using tape on a gas fitting. We smelled gas after I installed a stove top but couldn't find a leak with soapy water and finally called the gas company to bring a sniffer that located a minuscule leak at the fitting I did. I got scolded to only use pipe dope on gas or expect a leak. Your millage may vary but I won't do it again.

    A great video and here's a couple of extra tips to make life a little easier.
    Have the tape come off the bottom of the spool (as opposed to the top as shown in one part the video) as it's wound round the pipe. That way the tape stays taut (you can see in the video that the tape unwinds from the spool if taken from the top.
    If you need to wind tape around a pipe in confined space, eg. close to the back wall of a cabinet under a sink, wind some tape around a pencil or similar and use that instead or the tape spool. That way you can apply tape in a gap as small as 3/8th" / 9mm.

      Thank you for the helpful suggestion. I guarantee just about everybody here is working "close to the back wall of a cabinet under a sink." 😅😅

    Good vid. Leaks are no fun. So wrap it clockwise (from viewing it from front of nipple). Or just wrap it in the opposite direction that it screws in. But i like your method of holding the nipple in left hand and wrapping over top. That works. Do you recommend the goop (the pipe dope stuff) on top of the teflon tape? i hate leaks so i want the works.

  • @Maxid1
    @Maxid1 8 лет назад

    I bought the dollar store teflon tape once. I also only used it once. It wouldn't grab the threads and was so thin I had to throw it away and find the good stuff to complete the plumbing I was working on. Sometimes you don't save any money saving money on something.

      +Ken co Hi Ken, Codes vary regarding the use of sealants for gas lines. So it would be tough to do a "one-size-fits-all" video.

    • @kenco9598
      @kenco9598 8 лет назад

      +seejanedrill thanks for your response. codes or no codes my question is propane threads are reverse from water plumbing. I always use pipe tape every time I switch my 30 lb propane tanks every 3 weeks or so. I want to know if im doing it the right way. I use tape always because I had a leak years ago. perhaps I have been doing it wrong.I came to your vid because of the title. you should factor in the direction of the thread , left or right thread should be a major issue when you offer instruction or advice on using tape. im trying not to be an a hole , thank you.

  • @SandiRose2008
    @SandiRose2008 8 лет назад +1

    Thanks Leah. I'm dyslexic. Seriously. It's hard to look at the pipe threads to decide which way I'm suppose to wrap it. Sometimes I stare at it and can't figure out which way is counterclockwise. I have to picture the clock and try to turn the pipe so that I can put 2 and 2 together. It's even more difficult if it's a fixed pipe. It's not easy. But now, I just have to remember--- Away From Me. Easy Peasy.

    I'm right handed but I prefer to wrap it the left handed way. Another reason to leave threads showing on the bottom is it allows you to get the threads started.

    This is old school plumbing , not those stupid plastic tubes.
    Make a curve on a galvanized tube you need to fill up with sand, and then bend it !!! OLD SCHOOL guys !!! all my bathroom is done in that way you need to cover that tube with some tape made of "Brea" i cant find the English translation of that, but when you finish up , you heat it with some torch and this get glued to the tube.
