- The Prime Minister said earlier this week the country wouldn't be apologising nor paying reparations for what he called the 'abhorrent' historical practice.
But today he'll come face-to-face with a group of representatives from Caribbean nations who want to push the issue.
Starmer will be at CHOGM - the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting - and reports suggest Britain could be pressured into paying up to eighteen trillion pounds in restitution for its role in the slave trade.

Eighteen trillion is a massive figure, affording that would be difficult. To put it in perspective, you could pay ten million pensioners £215.00p a year for cold weather payments for 8,372 years, that's every single pensioner The mind boggles! 😮
I like how they want to take advantage economic ideas like inflation for compensation. How about we pay you the value of the money back then.

I've noticed no one talks about how slavery wasnt a racist behaviour. Slaves were an everyday occurrence if you conquered a country you took people as slaves. Africans were making their own slaves. Also why aren't spain/Portugal etc all being dragged into this conversation when they also benefited from the African slave trade.

What about all the foreign aid we've been giving to these countries for years where does it stop and slavery was going on in these countries before we turned up and eventually stopped it

How about the fact science tells us we are all from Africa so technically speaking Africa belongs to everyone. or are we just going to conveniently stop at a certain period in time.
