  • The Borromean Gulf forms Lake Maggiore's most beautiful corner, hosting the Borromean Islands and their spectacular, privately owned palaces.
Today we visit Isola Madre, the largest of the Borromean Islands, mainly occupied by one of Italy’s oldest botanical gardens.
The Borromeo Palace, opened to the public in 1978, is a succession of loggias and rooms furnished with tapestries, furniture items and paintings coming from various historic dwellings owned by the Borromeo family.
It's immense English-style botanical park is full of rare trees and exotic flowers, where peacocks, pheasants and all types of multi-coloured birds wander free.
Providing shade for the Palazzo is the imposing cypress from Cashmir, which over the years has become a symbol of Isola Madre.
The visit of the island require an entrance ticket.
