My 2015 Mazda3 i grand touring doesn't have paddle shifters on the steering wheel and button for sport mode is not installed. The slot is there if I remove the cap.
My 2015 Mazda 3 GS also doesn't have paddles or sport mode. I'm thinking this is probably on one specific trim that was on the Japanese cars. (Mine is Mexican built)
This was immensely helpful! It appears that all of this applies to my 2014 Mazda as well, at least as far as I can tell.

Sport only came on the s grand touring

I have the Japanese built 2014 Mazda3s GT. Mine has the sport mode as well as the paddle shifter. I think it's exclusively an s engine thing.
