Looks nice. Gorgeous shot at 5:58
Ha! Wonder how that other tent did 🤔
yours look better ngl
@@TheRealShinto The X-mid has a great aesthetic for sure!
Good eye Dan!

For 4 minutes I still thought it was the new Durston tent.
same
Yeah, he mentions X Dome at 1:47
Yeah, but when it didn’t snap in the wind I realized it wasn’t 🤣.
Update, this one 1️⃣ guess broke too 🤣. I’ll stick to my Nemo.
Yes I was nearly there but sticking with my 3f Ul big Agnes .. mind u the new Nemo looks good 😂
TBH your reviews were like all the other ones on RUclips, what was great was to hear a new dad talking about missing his new daughter, so take her with you and have wonderful adventures. We don't quite have your remote scenery here in the UK but from aged two onwards I took my little girl camping in the hills and mountains and they were some of the best memories ever 😀😀😀
Regarding the neo loft, I think this new fabric will be a game changer for air pads. The stretchiness makes it far quieter and less bouncy and thus more comfortable than any current fabric being used on an air only pad. Once they start designing lighter pads for backpacking with this fabric, it's going to change the whole game.
Seems like plastic loops + lineloks on the arcdome could easily be done away with and just replaced with a bowline + adjustable hitch to eliminate that particular failure mode.
I really appreciate your collaborations with Kane!
arcdome deserves more attention than it does right now, looks like a solid lightweight option for non-extreme winter use, look forward to a review in snow
Tarptent doesn't really send out tents for review, so you don't see much coverage of them. This is the first time they have said "yes" to a tent request I made. It's too bad because they make some awesome tents!
I wouldn't consider it lightweight relative to other options.
@@JustinOutdoorsHenry is particular about this. You are lucky to be in the club now. 👌🏻
I live in Iceland, and i am very curious to hear your oppinion on if you think that the ArcDome is better than the Scarp 1 Ultra in dealing with wind. As you point out, wind is our biggest concern here. Have been leaning towards the Scarp 1 but this vid has me re-evaluating (again!). Thank you, big fan of this channel.
If answering puts you in a strange position with Tarptent then i totally understand. Just thought you might have some insights. Still leaning more towards the Scarp as it is smaller lower wind volume to deal with. A 1p arcdome would totally mess me up 😮
I think the Scarp would be stronger with those extra poles. It just has poles in more angles that the wind can come from so to say.
Another great video. Thanks for all the info you share and hard work you put into the videos. You’ve sure helped me a lot. So happy to hear you and the family are doing great
Excellent vid Justin, really enjoyed this concept.
Good review and comments, learned a lot.
Nice to see you and kane out on a trip! Lots of interesting gear here! Not sure about MSR switch though. I agree it doesnt really fill much of a place in the market.
Cheers!
Glad to see Tarptents featured on your channel. They have some very interesting designs.
One of your better videos to date.
That sleeping bag is absurd! LMAO who's asking for more zippers??
I really enjoyed this video style, and would love to see more like it. While individual great reviews are great, seeing how everything interacts as a system is even better. I also felt it was a great length for the amount of content you covered.
I thought for sure your next video would be the new Durston tent. Are you going to review that one as well?
Dan only has one tent for pre-release reviews and I'm scheduled to get my grubby little hands on it at the end of October. So X-Dome content won't be out until November.
@@JustinOutdoors You called it the X-Dome at 1:46. Freudian slip? 😮😅😊 Great videos; really enjoy your content!
@@JustinOutdoors Is that the same tent that Steve just broke? (video was out yesterday)
@@KathyColorado1 Same one, haha. But Dan has new poles incoming.
@@JustinOutdoors Sisterhood of the Traveling X-Dome
The neoloft looks so thick for the weight. Im surprised you didn’t find it that much more comfortable than the helix. If it isn’t, doesn’t seem worth the weight.
I’m impressed with what I’ve seen from the ArcDome so far. How noisy did find the ultra fabric to be?
I didn't find there to be much noise rom the ultra fabric at all. The noise was more from the whooshing of the wind.
You could have also put a trekking pole in the side that was getting the wind.
Your videos are amazing and the cool thing is I 100% believe you would hike even if youtube didn't exist this is a strenght. Keep up the amazing work my friend
Thanks Ian! I hiked before YT and will hike long after! Same with nerding out about gear. haha
Defo on that pad! Looks great .. more money 😅
If you're doing tend wind tests in the future, I'd love to see you bring out a small handheld wind-measuring device, anenometer. It gives context, because the failure of a guy-out point only means something when we can compare it to a data point. I recommend Skywatch xplorer 1.
Definitely! I forgot both the ones I have. Haha
@@JustinOutdoors Ah, I know that feeling, all good. :D
Very scenic location - where in the Rockies is this place?
1:44 I think even he is confused too. I think Justin says "X-Dome" here😂
You have no idea how hard it was to keep the two tents straight in my head. Doesn't help that the ArcDome looks like more of an X than the X-Dome.
Lol I was just thinking about that with the names too. Plus the timing of the drop of X-Dome videos. Look forward to your review of that tent as well
The arcdome is more of an xdome than the xdome 😂
@@cuprajake1 To top it off, the X-Dome has more of an Arc structure than the X-Dome. Maybe they should do a tradesies.
@@JustinOutdoors😂
I like the shape of the arc dome and it definitely handled the wind which we get a lot of here in the uk.the pole sleeves are a concern for me the entry looks way too narrow and the cross over is another there's no need for the gap and if anything it could causing rubbing of the poles.all the guy out points are great I'd attache the guy permanently as I'm not a fan of those hook type of guys.
Rubbing won't be an issues as that area is reinforced, but it'll be nice to see TT address the overlap area with a fabric arch and then the entry point.
@@JustinOutdoors what's the pack size like I understand the ultra doesn't pack as small as silnylon
Please use 3-5in flexible pieces of guylines, it reduce the noice and hold the tent materials in windy conditions tight and protects against damages.
Great video! Thanks!for sharing
Wanted u to test the BRS with Flat Cat Gear's Ocelot windscreen, which all nests in ur cook pot: stove, fuel, lighter, windscreen, folding spork, carbon felt trivet/hot lid grabber etc coffee, tea, mylk & sweetener, soup 🍲 with add-ins
I'm very interested in that tent! and those views are incredible
I had a look at the arc dome, in the end i decided on Durston’s X-dome. I’m glad i waited.
Great video. Would be interested to see you take the Durston X-Dome to the exact same spot for comparison.
It's called the arcdome because Dan Durston was going to come out with the X-Dome.
As for the inreach products, mobile/cellular phones are gaining sat comms capabilities so Garmin's offerings will soon be expensive bricks because people will spend heaps less on dedicated actual PLBs and combine that with their mobile/cellular phones for messaging purposes, and not bother with costly subscription fees from Garmin
Alright then
Do you have an estimate of the wind speeds you experienced? And do you think it could have handled significantly more with no issue?
I was waiting to see you climb down that chain section. I nearly took a rock to the head climbing that.
I was thinking…I swear I just watched someone hike this same trail. I think it was you.
Nice review. Do you think that tent is better than the hilleberg Unna for bad weather in winter ?
No idea. I've never tried the Unna. Hilleberg isn't interested in having me test/review their tents. The Unna looks pretty sweet though.
Ive been looking at this tent, but just pre -ordered the Xdome 😁😁
I also pre-ordered the Durston X-Dome 1+.
Me too - would love to see Justin review the X-dome... I'm sure he will in due course. X-dome is considerably lighter than the ArcDome.
email dan letting him know ;)
Impersonation is the highest form of flattery. Dan must be cheesin hahaha
I like that pillow size, what pillow did you use on that trip? I didn't see it in the discretion.
So it seems like the comparison against the Durston gear X-dome for solo hikers isn't very good. The advantage seems to be that it is available with a solid inner, while the X-dome isn't (yet). The X-dome seems to have the advantage with vertical walls (due to crosspole), roomier inside with 1 side extended into the vestibule area, optional trekking pole reinforcement, and tons of little things like magnetic fly clips. On a brighter note though, I totally jumped at buying that thermarest neoloft pad after seeing that in this video. That looks worth the weight for sure
Apples to Oranges. The Arc Dome is a sturdier, 2 person tent built for gnarlier conditions - the limits will extend further into true 4 season reliability. The X-Dome is 1+, lighter weight, and the limits (of the CF poles) will be reached sooner in true 4 season conditions. Maybe Dan will release some DAC poles for deep 4 season use?
Where can you get that little white thermometer that shows how cold it was during the night
Great video…..as I’m looking for a good 4 season backpacking tent
X-Dome next!
I just did Carnarvon Lake a few weeks ago - incredible views but MAN is it windy!!!
Dude I literally slept in that exact same spot a couple months ago haha!
21:03 - Justin, I can’t remember right now. Have you tried the Kilos Gear 5 R-value pad? It’s the blue one. I’m really curious what you think of that one. Devin has given it some really good reviews. For its size, weight, price and r-value I’m interested in it and intrigued what you think of it. Thanks for all your great videos. ❤
On the prototype versions of the tent I noticed the inside zipper was very low compared to the apex. It looked like you couldn’t sit half in and out of the tent and do things like cook. Henry said it would be addressed, were you able to sit upright in the tent with the doors open with your feet outside to cook, change shoes etc? How tall are you? Very important to me on snow. Especially when the vestibule can be dug out and there’s no risk of bugs entering. Thanks. 😊
I didn't notice the apex being low. I'm 5'10. But I also don't use my vestibule to hang out in much.
Damnmmm that fleece pants modeling 👀
What pack were you using on this trip?
I like the freestanding design, and the cool fabric, but the door looks tiny and oddly shaped.
Think the x dome is a better thought out design in pretty much every area. That’s what I’ll be buying once the solid inner is made…..
A loop of shock cord on those points will fix the stretching 😊
Great vid and views. What's the Rab coat, Justin?

I think companies are seeing that having a line of comfort focused backpacking gear does well in sales compared the UL gear.
Seeing some comments, I'd say there is no point in trying to compare this to the new Durston tent. These are not competing products. TT ArcDome is 2p, 2 vestibules, specifically aimed at 4 season use. Durston X-Dome is 1p, 1 vestibule, specifically aimed at ultra-light 3 season use (with the claim that you could push it to 4 seasons, but it simply does not have the features to be a true 4-season tent). Even the structure is different, with the TT ArcDome being an actual 'dome' so 2 arch poles, and the Durston X-Dome pole structure being more like a hubba hubba.
The names are confusing, but if anything the TT is more of a proper dome than the Durston. Nonetheless, it's great to see that tent innovation is not dead, both companies are to be appreciated for that :-)
that's not an x-dome! great review Justin
I like the in the element review rather then in a weird perfect, magically lit room.
Whats the thermometer you were using?
What dehydrated meal was that? Also Whats the rab coat? Thanks Justin

Damn Justin got dark there 😄
Make sure you take your baby camping early. I took my 2yo snow camping, put him in a covered sled and went skiing to camp
I would like to watch your vid on the Durston X Dome tent .
email Dan letting him know ;)
What chair is that?
I need a thick sleeping pad, thicker then the thermarest xterm nxt, but I also need it to be very warm. I easily get cold and I hate when I am sleeping on my side and my butt sinks in and therefore gets cold. That happens on my sea to summit ehterlight xt. Any suggestions? Maybe I need to use the nxt under and the neoloft on top. But that's kind of bulky.
They should just do regular linelocks that girth hitch on with little loops for the tent.
Where was this spot?
I don’t think thermarest needs to make a premium version of the boost 650. I saw it in person at ISPO show and talked to the salesperson and the reason this exists is that it’s meant for people seeking pure comfort and not something like high-performance bag. It’s meant to be somewhat more affordable, more universal and invite more people to try camping without sacrificing comfort. It has its place, let it be, but time will tell how it will be acceptable by wider audiences.
What camp shoes are you wearing in this video? You like them?
geni.us/MEC-Camp-Slippers
It's the first time I see the rei flash air pack. Do you like it?
It's so-so. I'll have a video coming out comparing it to the Flash 55
Carnarvon Lake, right?
Yep
@@themooseontheloose I love you handle!
It took me ages to realise that it wasn’t the new Durston tent
What is brand of your fuchsia slippers?
geni.us/MEC-Camp-Slippers
Is that a new REI flash 55 pack? I’ve been trying to buy one but it’s been out of stock the whole month.
It looks like the flash air 50.
@@leefamily7yeah I think you’re right. For some reason I thought the flash air doesn’t have a ripstop grid fabric, but checking the website it looks just like the pack in the video.
Yup, flash air 50!
I'm wondering when you're going to start designing your own gear...
I have been playing around with an idea where I take a "concept car" approach to gear. I partner with a manufacturer to create a crazy tent or pack or whatever that pushes the limits of technology and features with little regard for cost. It would maybe result in some cool products but at least would showcase what can be done when really trying to push the limits of gear design.
What are you're camp shoes?
geni.us/MEC-Camp-Slippers
Where is this area?
Can't decide on your next drinking game? Join in on the latest drinking game; any time Justin talks about, refers to, misses, gets emotional, ties in babby n poo to gear, have a drink! See how it goes! Go back a little while, see if the liver survives! xD Haha. Jk dude, congrats and welcome to the family.
We need to see an Arc Dome in 1.25p. There. I said it.
👍👍👍!!!
watched the entire video thinking it was the durston and even thought he misspoke when he said tarptent
Those stoves are incredibly bulky and costly. A no go for me.
Please do same test for the new durston free standing tent ⛺️🤘
Do you also have some numbers? Saying "extreme wind" without numbers is a bit useless. Wind doesnt look so bad in the background.
Unfortunately, I forgot my anemometer. I do mention I think it is at least 60km/h at one point due to the lean test. When the lineloc hook broke, I think it was windier - maybe 80+km/h based on how difficult it was to walk into the wind. I didn't put numbers in because it would have been conjecture and then I'd have a bunch of comments calling that out.
Why don't you use an anemometer so that you can have a realistic assessment of the wind.
I forgot it
My computer overheated at 5:00
I really should have had a warning beforehand eh ;)
@@JustinOutdoors 😅
Inreach needs to drop those subscription prices down to next to zero. $50 a month so I can send pictures isn't worth it
The amount of cool stuff I'd have if the prices were next to zero
Tarptent over Durston any day!
no Durston, no party
You even called it the x dome...
5’-10”…?… it always amazes me with you Canadians, and British, how you can NEVER stick with the metric system. 🤔
I stopped buying TT after a couple VERY unprofessional and blatantly rude interactions with the owner, only to learn others experienced the same. TT makes good products, but my money will go to Durston and anyone else moving forward.
I am surprised to hear that because about 8 years ago a friend I drove to the TT facility in Northern California to look at his tents since we live nearby. Henry Shires spent at least 30 minutes showing us all the features of all his tents in great detail in a very cordial and friendly manner.
@@browsman2328 Good to hear. I’ve not mentioned my experience but to a few people, and when I do, stories come out of the woodwork of how he’s this mild and meek guy, and then if you don’t buy his product or return it he will completely lose it, name call, belittle, mock, throw a tantrum, hurl insults, make claims of blackballing you in the UL community, etc. When I was on the receiving end, I was so taken back that I found myself wondering if his mental state had soured with age and he had reached the point of being unstable.
@Truth-Seeker75 Who are you? What's your email so we can take a look at these alleged rude interactions?
@@tarptent Pass. Had more than enough interactions with you, Henry. Never again.
Engineers are not good customer service reps. I think Tarptent realized this. Henry is a genius though.
Seems like there are some lazy design aspects. It shouldn't take you to take it on one camp to discover all the points that need improving. You'd think they would have tested it out and discovered the flaws themselves.
I think one of the benefits reviewers like myself bring to the table is that we test such a huge amount of gear from different brands that we have a different eye for things. The TT design isn't bad, I wouldn't call it lazy either, it's just what they are used to.
A little disappointed to see you setting up your tent on tundra instead of an established site.
Well spotted. The location appears to be above Block Lakes in Banff National Park.
Edit: Looks like I was wrong, as it was pointed out in the comments already it is in K-Country and not Banff. Not sure what the camping regulations are for that area, but apparently random camping is permitted.
That Thermarest pad looks very comfy, but I wonder about the weight. Also, I tested a Kestrel pot and matching nesting stove from Fire Maple at Healy Pass a few days ago and it performed well in brisk winds, and the Piezo ignition worked, which was a pleasant surprise given the wind speeds.
