Today we're going to unbox and playtest a new laser engraving and cutting machine called PHECDA -- this is made by Elegoo, who also makes 3D resin printers we use at home. We got this laser during a Kickstarter this summer, and we've been saving it to unbox and set up with you. They are now available for sale -- you'll find them at jennifermaker.com/phecda, which links to an Amazon shopping list with a variety of different models. We have the 20 watt power model here to show you, but it also comes in a 10 watt power version.
So you might wonder, why would anyone need or care about a laser engraving/cutting machine? Well, a laser is stronger than a blade or knife, and it can work with thicker materials than, say, a Cricut cutting machine can. So if you've always wanted to cut things like wood or engrave things like metal, a laser engraver/cutter is the tool for you.
The Phecda's laser is a DIODE laser, which is like the Glowforge Aura's laser -- only the Aura's laser is only 6 watts, so the Phecda's laser is nearly twice as powerful at 10 watts, or nearly four times as powerful at 20 watts. None of these laser's is as powerful as the Glowforge Pro's laser, which is 45 watts AND it's a CO2 laser rather than a diode laser. BUT, the one big thing the Phecda has going for it is price -- the Phecda is substantially less, starting at just $250 fo the 10W version. The big question, though, is it worth even that much? Cheap is only great if does what it needs you to, and that starts by the ability to get it set up and going. So we're going to set up a new Phecda with you and see how it goes together. It'll either be a success or a spectacular failure, but it'll be authentic for sure!
This video is not meant to be an expert review of the Phecda -- yes, we've been using laser cutting machines for many years now, but this machine is brand new to us. We're discovering it WITH you, so you can get an idea of what we think of it to help you decide if it's something that would work for you.
More details about the Phecda... so again, this is a laser engraver and cutting machine, meaning it can essentially burn away material with a laser, either engraving or cutting it. It claims to work on a wide range of materials, including wood, leather, Kraft paper, stainless steel, and aluminum. What it can't do is cut acrylic -- it can only engrave acrylic, and only dark acrylic at that. The Glowforge Aura CAN cut dark acrylic, on the other hand.
Also, note that the Phecda cannot cut metal, such as aluminum or stainless steel -- it can only engrave those materials. It does claim to be able to cut wood with a maximum cut depth of 8mm on the 10 watt machine, and 14mm on the 20 watt machine.
Other things of interest about the Phecda are that it has an app to use on a mobile device (ios or android), and it also works with Mac and Windows programs like LightBurn and LaserGRBL.
The working area is 15.7" x 15.7", so that's pretty roomy -- larger than the Glowforge Aura.

We also became friends, sang a lot of duets together until we were finishing each other's sentences and realized we were in love. We met once in 2007, then every 3 months up until he moved here to Maine in 2011. We were married in 2019 after many hurdles and struggles but here we are, still together and still in love! LOL is this TMI? I love to hear when others meet online and stay together because there are still people who have not had good outcomes.

Just got my Phecda, added home limit switches and what a difference. Air assist as easy to install but changed to a silicone tube for better flexibility.

I had one of the first CO2 lasers and I had to figure it out on my own....definately a learning curve, but I loved it. I had to give it up for rent money once and that hurt since I got so little for it, but maybe a GlowForge is in my future. Who knows. Right now, have my heart set on a sublimation printer. I bought a cheap printer for $189 and turned into a sublimation printer. I used it 3 times lol. I think sublimation is fading out.

Jennifer, thank you for the videos and expert advice for laser printers. My husband had a massive stroke 2 years ago. He was a graphics designer and used all the common graphics programs. He is also a woodturner and works with woods and other products. It breaks my heart because he is so artistic but so much is locked into his damaged brain. I’m a sewing, quilting enthusiast and would like to use a laser to cut fabrics and also design for my sewing room. Your thoughts about which laser has the best software and training materials would be helpful. I don’t want to underbuy. I’ve watched two of the videos about lasers and am about to start 🎉the Phecda. Years ago, my husband owned an award business. He designed trophies, awards and had a silk screening business with customers like FedEx. I am hoping, a laser will open up his mind to possibilities and be a safer avenue than hand tools.
I only watched about 20 minutes but I will definitely watch the whole thing. I have been wanting to take the plunge into a laser cutter but the cost. I don't plan of doing a business. I want to do things for myself, gifts and the public library. SO having other options than the glowforge would be great.
