Scarlet Grace definitely had more of a Romancing SaGa vibe. I started Ameya in Emerald. Start playing, and I’m seeing nods to Frontier-bitch starts with Vermillion Sand!! It definitely holds your hand more than any other entry in the series and it has an excellent in-game manual. As a longtime fan of the series, I’m not sure what to think of this. 😅. The biggest problem I had when starting was I kept trying to do the battles like I did in scarlet grace. While they definitely look similar at a glance and share a few characteristics, they’re completely different. I’m constantly having to make the decision whether I need to wedge myself in on the timeline to prevent enemy combos or deciding that I can take a huge hit and just worrying about stringing together my own. You can’t just mash the same attack and win. Every single thing you do needs to be the result of an actual decision you weigh out.
They really perfected the combat system in my opinion. It's far more strategic here than any other entry in the series, and having to weigh your options before committing to your actions makes each battle feel epic and meaningful. There really are no instant victories here like in SaGa Frontier or the Romancing SaGa games where you can just spam Galactic Rift every battle or something lol. I feel the devs really went all-out on this one.
I love SaGa - currently playing the Minstrel Song Remaster and then I'll pick Emerald up towards the fall/winter. Have been a big fan ever since Legend I. SaGa is not for everyone and probably not even for most people, but I personally like every single mainline release. I remember for a time I had the 'spark' sound effect from Frontier as my cell phone's text notification :)
“This isn’t another Unlimited SaGa” is probably the best endorsement this could get! This seems pretty interesting, hoping I can find space in the backlog this year to get around to it!
First Saga game I played was the very first one back on the OG GameBoy, love this series it's my favorite Jrpg franchise. I can't wait to play this, but I have to wait until next month until I have the money to buy it. In the meantime I'm playing through Collection of Saga on my Switch!
I really enjoyed this one. For me, it felt like they took the best ideas from Scarlet Graces, added some new ones, and took out everything frustrating from Scarlet Graces. It's a little bit more railroaded, for better or for worse, but you do have a lot of choices to make in any given world. I personally started with Bonnie and Formina, and I did not like their story at all, admittedly, even though I really liked the character designs. However, the game really picked up for me when I played Siugnas. I love his party and it felt the most familiar to me mechanically after playing Scarlet Graces, since everybody is a human. I also think his story was a lot better because your entire party gets an introduction and backstory. The battle system is really good in this one. There's so many mechanics to consider, but the basic gist of how everything works is not that difficult to grasp, and the game does a good job explaining everything and giving you reminders of how everything works.
This game really has checked most of all the right boxes for me as a longtime Saga fan. I'm a little disappointed that not all races have a protagonist, but it's a minor thing. I like that some worlds have little hidden mechanics, one I did was very linear in its narrative but had a hidden time limit that affected the plot.
I’m enjoying the hell out of this game. I love the streamlined design, keeping you going and never confused on where to go. It’s not open world like Scarlet Grace, but the direction is determined by your every choice. Combat is super fun too. Exactly what I hoped this game would be.
Been a long time fan of your gaming content David, I am so glad to see your sub count so close to 100k. Cannot wait to see your coveted silver RUclips award adorning your wall very soon.
I own four SaGa games, this series is very random when it comes to difficult and that can be a good thing. I just wish the series wasn't so dungeon-heavy to keep you from seeing so much. With the amount of enemies, limited resources, & how easily you can be taken out, kinda hard to "finish" a story.
After some difficulties getting into Romancing Saga 2 I've really started to like the series, especially Scarlet Grace and Minstrel Song. Already played through Diva's story and looking forward to what other characters have in store.
I've been playing Tsunamori's route and the way things turn out is vastly different depending on what you do In the Demo i fought the 4 wardens in yomi at the end But in the full game i ended up fighting the dismal king at the end. Idk what i did that was different but doing different stuff at different times leads to varying outcomes
Yeah, even with 17 different worlds, there are multiple paths through each world too, so it's really never the same, I'm loving all the different outcomes!
Your explanation about the timing and positioning for combos makes a little more sense now. I wish that had been a little better explained in the game.
That’s a really good point . The combat is so fun once you take advantage of the ability to have multiple characters attack all around the same time on the battle timer gauge! I noticed that when I started reading about the combat and learned to stack attacks ! As the review says , in order to build combos you need to The turn gauge is there to help you build combos . You have to select their actions that will activate close to each other in order to get a big combo !!
I haven’t really gotten into a saga game (besides the spiritual successor “Alliance Alive”) since “FF Legend 1”! But I downloaded the demo of “Saga: Emerald Dawn” and while I was annoyed at first I could not skip or speed up the almost visual novel-length intro cut scene, I ended up becoming interested in the characters & world(s). The cut scene graphics… whoo boy, you can see where they saved money! 😂 But the actual combat gameplay is gorgeous! The animations, everything. I definitely had fun even though like most “Saga” games I don’t really understand the systems yet. But I am probably going to give this and also “Scarlett Grace” a chance. (And why does the cool vampire character have to be the hardest storyline! 😂)
Excited! Too many good switch games stacking up! Unicorn->Eiyuden->SaGa... My backlog is growing! Feels like yhe 90s again with the new X-Men toons and these 90s-like rpgs. It seems very SaGa Frontier like! Thanks for your complete review as you are familiar with the previous entries to compare it to!
If you enjoy this one, I'd say SaGa Frontier is a good next step, and then maybe the Game Boy titles on Collection of SaGa. Those titles follow a lot of the same concepts, like multiple worlds and various races with their own unique growth systems. Emerald really nailed all that "traditional" SaGa stuff.
It looks and runs good on Switch; however, the input lag for all the menus was unbearable for me in a game that you spend 90% of the time sifting through them (battle and in game menus). I really wanted to play it on Switch but it looks like I will end up playing it on Steam for the snappier menu inputs alone.
@@kianlin3260 Nevermind, disregard that. I have just recently found out that the JP version of Emerald Beyond does not have English. For the other recent SaGa games there was an Asian version (Asian versions always have English included) but Emerald Beyond does not seem to have one....at least yet.
Love the review David! This is a game i probably wont get though as the saga series never really appealed or interests me. I hope you do a review of sand land! SaGa Frontier is another good one to start with, since each scenario is usually pretty short (depending on how much you want to grind for skills and stats). Even more so with the New Game+ feature they added to the remaster, so you can carry over items and abilities to the next character. A couple of the scenarios are a bit of a whiff in my opinion, but most are really fun. Especially Red, Asellus, and T-260.

Really wish they didn’t reuse the same old engine they used on Scarlet Grace which was a PS VITA game… they had no reason to other than wanting to spend as little money possible. The game just looks bad. Still a fun game but man they should have made it with an actual modern day game engine they definitely had enough money to with how much profit they make monthly from the mobile game and the remasters but chose the cheaper route instead.
