Is Mahi-Mahi Resort Unfinished in Splatoon 3?

- This is my first time making a video like this, so I'm open to all feedback!
To be frank, Splatoon 3's version of Mahi-Mahi Resort sucks. However, there may be some reason to believe the stage was rushed for launch, and could (hopefully) get a major rework in the future.
CATLOAFMAN's video: • Nintendo ruined one of...
Mahi Mahi was far superior in Splatoon 1, enough said.
very true
That’s not even a debate friend
It doesn't even feel like the same map
I haven't even played splatoon 1 and I can confirm this is true
Fr even if I never played splatoon 1 I looked at splatoon 1 Version and my god did they destroy it like a butterfly vs a bus
I think Mahi Mahi is the biggest candidate for a redesign after the backlash, it's very clear they had the flank routes on the islands until very recently in development, adding those flank routes would help so, so much.
All they had to do is keep it as is not massacre it so we all meet in the middle.
The maps in this game looked so promising in the trailers. I think the theory of someone deciding they needed to be more linear is very likely and sounds about right for Nintendo.
You know I never thought how nonsensical the stage was, the RM thing and TC one actually make so little sense when its pointed out. Makes me hope reworks are more likley to happen.
And hopefully they come quick, instead of at the end of the game's life. I don't think any of us would be able to handle this being unchanged for 2 years lmao
@@thebipedalsquid bro I’ll just go play splatoon 1 if I gotta.
@@SlimbTheSlime not the point 👍
Another small thing that bothers me is it feels like they took the personality out of the stage the steel drum playing and water level dropping happens way faster in splatoon 3 compared to the original it felt much more like an event when the water level dropped in splatoon 1 cause it took 10 seconds for the whole event to play out as opposed to splatoon 3 where it only takes 3 to 4 seconds
I ALMOST mentioned that in the video, and you're totally right. I also noticed that in Splat Zones it falls a lot slower compared to the other modes.
A lot of the maps in Splatoon 3 feel compressed and lack proper flanking routes, and Mahi-Mahi is a huge victim of this
I feel like Splatoon 3 has more of a compressed map system than the other games
Yeah I feel like eeltail alley was largest of the new maps and still felt a little cramped sometimes
Yesh I hate it and it's so stupid
The devs designed all the maps so that we all meet in the middle, they could of had one map and be done as it would be no different to all the other maps.
That floaty is for Heavy Splatling users to throw Sprinklers on top of. They are critical elements to this map
For Bloblobbers too!! 😁
there used to be way more floaties than that one. old splat really cared about every sub getting a chance to shine.
As well as good anchor points for zipcasters to zoom straight into enemy base.
This video made me realize what they did to eel tail. It looked better in the trailer!
Honestly i wish i wouldn't have seen the old one, now im kinda sad when we dont have it
I genuinely think the stage design was deliberate. The philosphy of forcing skirmishes in mid is big in this game.
It's just that these design decisions suck, someone wasn't around to let them know these suck.
So now it's up to us.
Strange how many stages like Museum and the good Splatoon 2 stages were barely touched in that aspect.
Holy CRAP this video blew up over night! I was really not expecting this.
You got a point on eeltail!
BECAUSE ONCE I SAW THE TURF WAR DATE RELEASE GAMEPLAY
I THOUGHT THAT WE WERE GOING TO GET A NEW MAP BY HOW MUCH THOSE MAP LOOKED DIFFERENT.
I saw someone make the point that, with BOTW2 delayed, Nintendo didn’t give Splat3 as much time as the devs might’ve needed to get a big-title game out for this season. I kind of see it, but then again there’s also Pokémon coming soon which complicates the idea…
Mahi Mahi in Splatoon 1 is best described as "Colorful Chaotic Fun"
Mahi Mahi in Splatoon 3 cannot be described as any of those 3 adjectives.
They washed out all/most of the colors.
Minimized the effect of the water gimmick, and removed the islands, forcing all players to go through mid, shrinking a already small map.
Mahi Mahi is the only map in which I am completely avoiding it in every mode, simple because of how poor the redesign is.
I loved the Sp1 Mahi Mahi, I can't comprehend why they decided that they needed to butcher it so badly.
the colors are not really washed out.
Not minimized but it was lessened, the islands being gone is not that bad, true but it is fine and makes it more challenging.
The redesign is not that poor.
They did not butcher it though at all.
Mahi mahi is my least favorite map in splat 3😭 not only is it cramped, once the enemy team takes mid it becomes incredibly hard to regain grounds
I personally disagree. Both teams can easily take mid on Mahi-Mahi. Especially when the water level goes down since there's not much option to go into enemy base at that point. Unless you have zipcaster or jump between the middle 3 platforms which is risky because there's usually a spot that chargers & splatlings like to position on the opposite side. Therefore (most) enemies can be prevented from camping spawn. And the home base area becomes elevated from the central area halfway through the match.
I hate Sturgeon Shipyard more because the map layout is actually opposite of Mahi-Mahi because the central area is elevated and the home base entrance is lower. This favours the team that controls the middle area, and with the 2-3 tight choke point exits the map then becomes a race to control the middle area as soon as possible.
i want to have faith that the devs are gonna fix the stages to be better in some big update later on but im not sure how likely it actually is :( ESPECIALLY mahi mahi my beloved......... one of my favorite splat1 stages and they BUTCHERED IT SO BAD
my biggest fear right now is that they've butchered flounder heights instead of improving it, as its another of my fav splat1 stages :(( PRAYING that itll be good in splat3 as well!!! and im hoping we get more fun stages like bluefin depot and maybe even saltspray rig back. yes they were goofy and maybe made 0 sense but they were so FUN to play on!! i miss them so much :(
Flounder Heights is one of my favorite stages too, mainly for the layout, how the stage looks and how there's so many places to hide and approach on the walls. Unfortunately from the photo of it's preview shown in the direct, it looks like the middle of the stage won't be as tall as before.
Hopefully they make a redesign of the map like they did to other maps in splatoon 2
I feel like this is very apparent if you play a weapon like Splatana. It feels like a weapon that wants to hide and ambush but can't because there's barely any cover.
Yeah, I getcha ^^'
I think splatoon 3 suffers from devs looking to competitive games for map balancing rather than continuing their trend of wacky verticality and wide robust maps.
Which is also weird, because from what I know competitive players also like open maps where you can flank.
i've not lost all hope yet, we have seen maps fixed/remade after they were released. Just gotta hope they do it to mahi mahi and hammerhead
I have a theory that big run itself may lead to redesigns for stages, with the salmonids destroying Hammerhead Bridge and forcing it to go under construction again.
@@thebipedalsquid please that sounds so cool
@@conkerclub thanks lol. It really would be awesome huh
@@thebipedalsquid yeah, and big run will usher the second coming of Christ, give every Splatoon 3 player free garlic bread, and will remove Tenta missiles from the game
the whole title should be "is splatoon 3 rushed" because you are speaking facts here 😭✨
The islands are literally inconsequent
I never and I mean NEVER use
They're useless in every mode
And it's such a tiny ass map that you don't really need to use em to flank
On Rainmaker and Clam Blitz you can ALMOST use them on lowered tide to distrupt a charger or leave a beacon for a backstab on a push, but they're not even usable until the tide goes down
@@sonicrunn3r895 just like mahi itself
Barely playable until tide goes down
@@chkensammich Literally. Though to be fair, it makes me laugh every time someone dunks right into the Tower Control trenches
Yeah, because not only are they really hard to get to now and smaller, but they no longer act as a shortcut because of how the spawn was changed.
@@sonicrunn3r895 tc on mahi is some 8th circle of hell shiz
at minimum i want the splatoon 1 layout to return for mahi mahi, and for other stagesWAHHO WORLD they need to fix it a lot and make it very diffrent from splatoon 2s version and better, other than this the rest of the stages r not hell to deal with 4 me, hammer head is my favorite(both ones eaqually (edit: NEVERMIND, S1 HAMMERHEAD CLEARS S3 HAMMERHEAD) )and i love its transition from splatoon 1 being a construction site to splatoon 3 being done
They should've left all the rancid splatoon 2 stuff behind if they weren't going to make *any* adjustments
@@chkensammich ikr
There's nothing wrong with Wahoo World in terms of map design. People just meme on it for the sake of it.
Museum D'alfonsino has a similar concept layout with rotating walls, a platform in the center connecting the two team's bases and wide spaces yet people don't shit on it.
Sturgeon Shipyard is arguably worse due to the 3 tight choke points that a team who controls the middle bridge area is almost always guaranteed to win the match.
@@_Just_Another_Guy the problem is that there's only one tiny ass route to mid unless the platforms are moving and pushing is very annoying
Bottom of mid is pretty pointless too (that said the rainmaker layout for it is ok)
Also agreed on sturgeon being way worse
Mahi-mahi is a shame. Hammerhead bridge is a travesty. Not excited to see what’s in store for flounder heights
Considering the bugs and insane changes from trailer to final version (in a bad way) it does feel like it was rushed for release... and I'm hiiiighly hoping that as time goes on and we get updates they'll, at least slowly, be reworking the stuff to be like it was intended from the start. This is the first time I'm having the opportunity to *play* the game rather than watch it on youtube so I'm not familiar with how updates work on splatoon, but still,,, immensily hoping they take the feedback and change things for the better
Mahi Mahi from Splat 1 is my favorite map of the series. I was so excited when they announced it was coming back but after I played, I thought it felt tight and awkward but at first I chocked it up to nostalgia making me think the map was always a weird map, but after looking back at it, I realized I was right and that they drastically changed the layout to the point where it lost the charm the original map had. All I ask is they directly bring Splat 1 Mahi back.
Nintendo: Alright is everyone ready for mahi mahi!
Fans: YEAAH!
Nintendo: Alright here ya go!:
Mahi mahi splat3: HeY EvEryOne ItS MeE MaHi MaHi ReSoRt. ReMeMbEr tO PlAy MorE SpLaToOn 3. water wooshing noises.
Fans: 🗿
I would at least want them to add ropes to the other side of the balloon, to make it make sense
I doubt hardly anyone will notice unless its mentioned inside update notes
When the Salmonids raid Mahi-Mahi in a Big Run, let’s just all collectively agree to let them take it over so Nintendo is forced to update the map.
They redesigned Starfish Mainstage around one and a half year into Splatoon 2's game lifespan.
I literally cannot FUCKING BELIEVE HIW THEY COULD FUCK THIS UP OMG IF ITS NOT FIXED IN THE NEXT PATCH WE RIOT
I want Splat 1 Mahi and Ancho-V back, they were awesome
mahi in splat zone is just dog shit period. the only thing you need to lock all your short range weapon out of the hot zone is just a charger/splatling, like seriously what are they thinking man
Splatoon 3 is my first Splatoon game, so I don’t know the comparisons between this game’s maps and the previous versions. Even without prior knowledge, I hate how cramped Mahi Mahi is, because it feels like you’re constantly under fire with no room to breathe.
The more I played, the more I began to realize a lot of Splatoon 3 maps don’t really allow flanking or circumventing the opposing team’s area of control, so you’re forced to throw yourself in over and over again even if it doesn’t work, especially if the other team has gained and held too much ground. I wish there were more circuitous paths so it didn’t feel like some weapons were nerfed by almost every map forcing engagements at a cramped choke point in mid.
And this video showed how maps were actually redesigned to be smaller, reinforcing my thoughts about some maps being too small. I’m so glad I came across this, because it helped me understand why I developed those opinions. I hope they do some redesigns after the next balance patch, because Mahi Mahi is quite frustrating for weapons that aren’t as good in direct engagements.
Thank you so much for the informative video.
Glad I could help!
Brinewater surprised me with its single flank route, that’s saying a lot about the design
I'm legitimately scared how they'll ruin Flounder Heights rip
Splatoon 3 was definitely rushed, the lack of X rank and League battles makes it obvious all this stuff was planned but they were forced to release it in a future update
Either that or they're applying the "fix it later" approach to this game
@Jeff Logan It totally was, like X Rank and League battles were literally in Splatoon 2 there's no way they couldn't have had it at launch unless it was rushed (Or if they purposely left it for future updates)
@Jeff Logan X mode was in Splatoon 2
As a huge fan of flounder heights this worries me
TIME FOR MY THEORY ON THE GAMES DEVOLPMENT!!!
I think new map designer hire made Mahi and Hammer redesign. Splatoon 3 maps were already headed toward the "S2 way" but I think the new map designer that was hired made Mahi and Hammer (Along with Flounder) because of how basic and similar they are. I believe that these were his "test" stages as this was his first entry into Splatoon games as a whole which is why the layout is so easy and streamlined. The Head Dev's didn't mind since they already liked basic and easy layouts and they just let the stages go since they had other issues (bugs galore).
I do not like this stage in splatoon 3. The idea of a stage opening up fully after one team pushes far enough into the match, is annoying to me.
Interesting take. What do you think of the original version if you've played the first game?
Hopefully later on they'll rework this stage in future updates just like Starfish Mainstage in Splatoon 2
They might do what they did in Splatoon 2 where they make some stages larger in an update.
Hope so. I remember how much they changed Blackbellly Skatepark, especially the Rainmaker version of the map.
i wish they tested the oversimplification philosophy on wahoo world. honestly it probably wouldve improved it.
That would be interesting to see. Personally I feel like it's in a place where it IS oversimplified but also too gimmicky at the same time? I think it needs a route to the left and to add ink rails over where the bridge closes, because when it does there's basically only one route to mid.
@@thebipedalsquid i think the bridge should just not close, and there should be a route around mid
@@CoolMicrowave yeah, I wouldn't even be that mad if it was just the vastly superior Splatoon 1 layout just without the grates if they wanted to go that route. It would take away its main identity but at least it would still be a good stage. I genuinely can't even try to compare the layout of Splatoon 3's version because of how radically different and simplified it is, where at least on Mahi-Mahi I can sort of tell what happened to the shape.
@@thebipedalsquid i think in the dlc tartar will come back to life and team up with mr grizz, then they will get the nils statue and destroy hammerhead, therefore reverting it.
@@CoolMicrowave I was also imagining something like that with the DLC too, however it makes me wonder how that would work in terms of spoilers. How long would they have to wait to announce the change? How would they explain the context to people who didn't buy the dlc?
I do remember there being stage revisions for certain splatoon 2 maps, so im praying they'll do the same with splatoon 3's and fast. I cant take playing on mincemeat or undertow any longer, let alone mahimahi 😭
JUST KEEO THE NEW MID AND ADD EVERYTHING ELSE BACK PLEASE NINTENDO I BEG YOU
They can update stage just like how Starfish MainStage was updated with different platforms in Splatoon 2
Im glad people are criticizing the game. While i love splatoon I think people give too many free passes to a lot of Nintendos problems.
I love the vine boom pain sounds when showing the comparison (0:06 and 3:37) and the *r a i n m a k e r* reverb, I also agree with everything you said
Goated video plz moar
Hammerhead bridge was also murderated
I think that floatie is there to block line of sight and keep the left-most platform away from view against long-ranged weapons using high ground, rather than serving as cover. In Tower Control, Rainmaker, and Clam Blitz, however, it doesn't seem to serve any purpose, which means Nintendo probably just left it there (though I will agree that the ropes are poorly placed).
One more point: I believe Nintendo chose to (unsuccessfully) rework Mahi because keeping the original map's diagonal layout likely would have introduced difficult design challenges when creating balanced Ranked mode variants, especially Rainmaker and Clam Blitz (both of which have objectives placed next to each spawn arena).
A diagonal layout would still be better for those modes than a straight away far away from the spawn.
Feels like the map design for Splatoon 3 is very afraid of flank routes and just prefer to force people into mid for whatever reason
y’all imagine what they’re gonna do to flounder….
Shivers down my spine
Some things I do wish they brought back to the stage were islands on the left of the spawn and the ramp that came after the water dropped. I always had fond memories of me dunking the rainmaker on those maps.
Oh god I never really compared current eel tail to the trailer. I’m depressed now :( like seriously it makes me sad what they did I hope they have the balls to admit they fucked up and expand the stages
Oh mate you aint the only one. I wish to forget the old version now....
To me and hear me out on this one. If a game came out that perfect in every way. Then the gods themselves have forged it cause human error exists. It is when it is implemented can it truly be fixed to where the problems are few and far between. So I personally don't see the problem in unfinished things early on. Now if the game was out for 6 months to 1 year and ultrastamp and brellas were not fixed I would very upset.
I really don’t like the streamlined maps. It feels impossible to get anywhere when the other team has a long range weapon since there’s very minimal routes to the enemy’s side of the map. Which turns the middle of the map into something very stressful. Mahi mahi is my least favorite since all a charger has to do to reach most of the map is sit on the center platform.
I despised Mahi Mahi resort in splatoon 1, it was my arch nemesis
And they made it wORSE??????
This is my first Splatoon game. I hate this stage.
I really like mahi mahi in terf war. It suffers from the fact that the last 30 seconds can undo the effort from the last 2:30, but thats a problem for all of terf war. It sucks in everything else though.
If I'm going to be honest I think I like Splat Zones the most.
YESS, i thinked that i was the only one that had a feeling that Splatoon 3 maps were soo small and claustrophobic XD
Pro tip bro, something I struggled with originally. Lower you're BGM, it's incredibly loud. Otherwise loved the video, will stay tuned :)
Thank you :)
We need a stage where you have to try to claim turf on it before it sinks away
Omg yes that would actually make the first half actually matter too :o
@@anarkuu that’s what I’m saying! Turf wars will be more intense, imagine Snapper Canals return, with the bases being at the very bottom and at the halfway mark, taps on each side turn on, water floods the bases, spawner drones ever so slowly move in, 10 seconds left, the battle only in the middle, 5, 4 ,3, 2, 1, done, no space left, the entire stage, sunk… then for the final results, two giant drains opens in the bases, where the taps are, water gets recycled ready for the next match, the results are announced
That concept was experimented with on a few shifty stations in Splatoon 2, where certain areas became blocked off halfway through the game. It would be pretty cool in a real stage honestly.
@@thebipedalsquid If you mean furler in the ashes, then it’s just like Mahi-mahi where more ground can be accessible
@@CaptsuneMiku no I'm not sure what they're called, but there was one where a giant dome covered the middle of the stage, and another where you shot at these spinners that slowly retracted a massive part of the stage behind a glass wall.
I recently went back to splat1 and I played mahi-mahi on there, and I gotta say, splat1 mahi-mahi is so much better. It feels like a lot of the maps in s3 are kinda…cramped feeling?
All these weird redesigns are, in my opinion, the result of devs trying to compact the maps-- and this isn't a bad thing exactly! I have to say that I feel like, compared to the other games, Splatoon 3 has a lot more 'action time' than down time due to the maps being smaller. There is less space for you to mess around in, which means you're basically confined to the areas where everyone else is. This definitely has some perks! You never have to worry about a teammate being on the other side of the map messing around in a flanking area while you're fighting a 3v4.
But there's some obvious downsides as well, like everything you mentioned in your video: butchering of beloved maps, less room for creative plays, everything feels cramped, etc. I'm sure the dev team went back and forth on this issue several times since we did see totally different maps in the trailers.
To be honest? I don't think they're going to fix the GLARING visual discrepancies. Not anytime soon, anyways. They're going to be too busy working on balancing patches and future DLC to worry about something cosmetic...... no matter how butt ugly it looks.
nah i literally sigh everytime i play mahi mahi, idk what i would change to make it better but i know i would rather place most other maps.
*Splatoon 1 Mahi*
This map generally was way better in splatoon 1, but this is actually one of my favorite maps for splat zones in 3. I don't like it in any other modes, but love it in zones.
going on ranked mahi mahi feels like a gamble because it always feels so damn different i cant remember which ones which
Basically just completely avoid it if the game mode objective doesn't involve inking the ground.
Whenever I see Maye Maye In turf war I just don’t Play
It's ok, there's a sign in the middle now, map fixed
The real question is, who the hell thought of selling a pit of death as a resort
Something that still surprises me is that if the game was rushed to the point where they gave us half-ready stages, why didn’t they work on them? Nintendo always focus on quality and Splatoon 3 seems to be the complete opposite on most parts of the game, like the stages
mahi mahi is literally like the first map i ever played in splat 3 (i totally won like 1 time when its my first time playing)
Obviously after octo expansion, more octos have gotten jobs in inkopolis. This explains floating geometry

I’m really sad the new hired level designers took this route with stage designing. The only new stage with “flanks” is Mincemeat and it’s upsetting.
Hagglefish has the best flanks of the new stages.
On my hands and knees begging Nintendo to rework the Splat 3 maps to be like their beta counterparts and to fix Mahi 😭
I hope mahi mahi gets taken over by the salmonoids in big run and then we can see it go out of rotation for a while cause this my least favorite map
Then they'd pollute the waters of the beautiful pool.
@@thebipedalsquid perfect 😈
If that happens we should just let them take it
Of all maps to change, this was probably the second worst one to do so. The only one that made the transition even worse is Hammerhead.
huh I never noticed that
what was Nintendo on when they made this stage lol
also I never noticed how good old eeltail looked omg
It really feels like an AI took over lol
Good video!
As someone who enjoys being splattered by e-liters. It's perfect.
I just want blackbelly skatepark back in the games, I was surprised they didn't add it back in 3 :
Blackbelly isn’t coming back in 3 because it already came back in two
Other ones that won’t come back are (if they ever come back in another splatoon game it will be a miracle)
Piranha pit
Camp triggerfish
Moray towers
ancho V games
Port mackerel
Kelp dome
Walleye Warehouse
Or arowana mall
I mean, just gonna say.. I never played Splatoon 1 but I can say my most hated map is Mahi-Mahi. I actively avoid it most of the time in rotations because it feels like one of the worst designed maps. I always heard it was so good in 1 too… so I can safely say the 3 iteration was definitely not the first impression I assume 1 players would have wanted for everyone who never played 1 before.
Just imagine if they reconstructed the stage to make it the Splatoon 1 version…
I really hope that Mahi Mahi gets fixed sometime in the future
Loved the video and I cant help but agree. First splatoon game I've ever played and really enjoy the game, however the biggest thing is the maps in this game. I would love to keep the broken missiles if we could get some great maps since these ones feel kinda wack at times.
we all know nintendo slightly neutered mahi mahi resort in splatoon 3
2:46 Mahi-mahi is going to be in the next tricolor for spring fest
I will not play if this map is in rotation. def not a stretch to be annoyed it’s ass
I cry every time I see this map 😭😭😭😭😭😭
There's a possibility that Tri-color battles could only be truly tested with a test demo, since having only a few people test it wouldn't be the greatest data for the game. That's why it's so imbalanced and even less frequent in the gear grub and fun splatfest.
Tbh this is my favorite map for this game in terms of layout and gameplay
Yeah it’s way too small now 😭 I miss the chain bridge between two of the island platforms, worked great for rainmaker
They might be saving the chain bridges as a unique feature for Camp Triggerfish if it comes back because there's no map yet with chain bridges. Only grate platforms.
@@_Just_Another_Guy splatoon one stages such as camp triggerfish that came back for splat 2 won’t be in 3
You pretty much summed up all the facts
We all know nintendo COMPLETELY gutted Mahi Mahi resort in Splatoon 3
You need to let go of the past !
The devs probably wanted to get rid of choke points and narrow corridors on most maps.
The only one that has a fairly large amount of narrow hallways and choke points is Mako Mart.
Even the redesigned Hammerhead Bridge only has one choke point and is wide enough even though it's essentially a long corridor map.
Imagine if they brought back urchin
Wait.. people remember mahi mahi fondly?
What the fuck
It's a pretty hit or miss stage from what I see. People who loved it really loved it and people who weren't fond of it really weren't fond of it.
The final game plays like the splatfest demo and it’s stupid.
Thanks for the input Lego Qui-Gon Jinn
PLEASE give us back beta eeltail actually, never noticed that one before
Plus that floaty you mention is TOO LOW. I recently used the ultra stamp on Mahi Mahi and when you try to go under it the stamp gets caught on the floaty 😭 It looks like you could just stamp through, but no.
Finally someone talks about this problem
This map makes it too easy to camp and hold a choke point in the middle
Either Nintendo was rushing on the maps or they become really lazy on the maps. I mean looks like laziness to me when I see how the map is. The remake maps have less effort. It just looks like they didn't even bother making the maps look better.
