- Skunkape Games lied, they changed the game's jokes despite saying they wouldn't. and they lied again by saying that there was no censorship when clearly there is.
here the proofs of these changes and even joke cuts.
For those asking about Bosco's voice change, Skunkape Games admited that they change Bosco voice due to be a white actor doing a "stereotypical impression of an African American"
Confirming that the changes are due to political correctness.
It should be noted that they only admitted this after the game came out.

You forgot the one in chapter 5 when bosco says: “It’s ’cause everyone on the internet has to pick an avatar, like a dwarf or an orc or an hot young fifteen-year- old girl curious about the adult world and willing to experiment.” It now says “It’s cause everyone on the internet has to pick an avatar, like a dwarf or an orc or a troll… But we’ve got enough trolls.”

I also recall a total line change in chapter 5, right after you get all of Max's parts back, when Max tells Sam that he learned an important lesson.

At least they changed it with another joke. Compare "It'll clear out a room of militant college students in no time, guaranteed." with "It'll clear out any room in no time, guaranteed" Seriously they didn't even try with that one.

I think they used the same voice lines from the original. It does not really seem like sam or max changed that much the support characters simply changed the context of there lines.
ill be honest: the jokes changed were fairly minor. like, very minor. the rub my unicorn bit was unchanged, the jokes about max being gay were unchanged, the camp of hugh bliss is completely unchanged.
the changes are so slight that to be honest, as someone who never played the originals before the remaster, the changes arent that bad.
@@supersmashbro596 I still like the remaster, it's just a lot of people don't like and support that they lied about censoring jokes in the remaster and how some of the jokes were ruined because of the change (i.e the skinhead joke). But that doesn't completely ruin the remaster, and I will admit that it was great that they included the original version. It's still good for new players, but if you don't support the new censorship, just stick with the original.
Isn't Max himself a nudist anyway, he doesn't wear any clothes at all.
The Sissypants change makes no sense because they still left in instances of Sam and Max calling him that in other lines, so what was the point?
If you're going to remove a joke, remove it all traces of it, otherwise it'll completely halfass.
I mean, the original jokes kinda sucked. Removing them doesn't change much for me. Edgy isn't always funny.
@@1234fakerstreet but that's the charm of Sam and Max games (at least it was a charm, apparently) - for being edgy and joking about racist and sexist themes. It's not a bad thing to remaster an old game and give it some polishing, but when developers don't like some jokes and "Bosco being voiceacted by not a black person", this is where it crosses the line. Devs also stated, that they are interested in more remasters, and this could only be a tip of a huge iceberg, where the whole scenes could be cutted, and I don't like this kind of "remasters", honestly.
@@vanivan5202 given the cost and time of the remaster to only have it receive massive backlash for a subpar joke doesn't really seem worth it from a developer point of view. They have a better chance of appealing to a new assiduous then trying to please the 30 year olds that might be interested in the remaster

The voice is fine to me, but I never played the original release.
The new guy is just fine, and you can tell because people who didn't play the original like the him and don't notice that he "doesn't fit in" or whatever.
A month later and now I’m starting to get use to his voice.
The updated visuals are great, the new voice actor is passable but the censorship just makes you wanna stay with original.
I'm French and censoring Bosco's French name was just abysmal, do they really think we're afraid of the word "coward" and "sissypants"? Skunkape Games outdid themselves by managing to make me feel offended over censorship rather than the original joke, which didn't offend me to begin with.
When something is attempted to be censored, but it just indirectly makes it more offensive.

@@TheMightyN Exactly. What made Sam & Max unique was it's humor, not its "gameplay". Removing what made it stand out from every other point & click is just gonna make it, well.... just another point & click. Hell, even if somebody else was french and got offended by the original joke, well who cares? The series is humoristic, if you can't take a joke when the entire SERIES premise is making jokes then maybe you'd think that it's just not for you. The fact that Skunkape Games went as far as to say that Sam & Max wouldn't make fun of anybody for what they can't help being when that's what they have always been doing really makes you think what kind of people are in charge of the series.

It's like having Coffee, but without the sugar. A sense about Comedy is supposed to leave you different than where it found you. For the most part, anyway--that's what Duckman says at least.

As of Feb 3 2021, Skunkape actually released the original game as free dlc for the remastered. Completely unchanged with boscos old voice actor and jokes, I think they heard us fellas! Good on them!
If they're going to insist being "PC" from now on, I hope that they continue releasing the original uncut dialogue in future seasons. That and actually direct new Boscoe to sound like a middle aged conspiracy nut in the streets of New York.
Beamdog did the same thing with Baldurs gate and also expected it to somehow make up for butchering a game and profiting off it. People who let them get away with this shit are part of the problem

In Bosco's defense about being paranoid, a talking dog that's the same height as him, and a psychotic rabbit with sharp teeth and oversized head (reminds me of this terrible time at the Cave of Carbanog), maybe his paranoia is appropriate

this is the strangest part of the remaster...like everything else was left in tact and even touched up but they not only changed bosco’s voice,they censored the jokes with it which feels odd coming from Sam and Max specifically

The "Drug dealer" joke wasn't censored, it was an accident. It was fixed with a recent update

Glad that modders have restored most of the original lines and Bosco's original voice actor. It's a shame too - the remaster is generally fantastic. But they meddled with so many things that didn't need to be changed. And Bosco's original voice actor, who is still doing plenty of voice acting work, sounds fucking hilarious. The new guy isn't bad, but he doesn't capture the frantic energy of the original.

When I first saw news of "some jokes didn't age well so we changed them" I would've expected them to be much worse than this. It can be alright to change old dialogue SOMETIMES... but these should've been left untouched.

The French Disguise!Bosco's name change was the dumbest since Sam and Max's dialog was kept. Meaning they still called him Sissypants for no reason.

you may want to add yet another censorship.. At the end of chapter 6 (on the credits scene) the TV director pulls off a luger (max style) in the remake she just stands there, making the scene totally senseless, if anything they made it worse lol..

Fun fact, in polish version, "Bosco" sounds like "bosko", which literally means "divinely" but is commonly used as "awesome/swell/poggers", so the translators decided to make a joke, and named his shop "Bosko u Bosco", which in pronunciation sounds like "Swell At Swell", "Awesome At Awesome", "Poggers At Poggers", pick your favourite 😂

@@theexaltedlt8222 I don’t see how Bosco’s voice is an offensive black stereotype because (let’s call a spade a spade) there are black people that sound like that. I don’t see how it’s offensive. If it’s a cartoon, expect exaggeration. Samurai Jack’s voice is equally as “offensive” it’s that monotone, accented Japanese samurai voice. It’s a stereotype. It’s equally as “offensive” for the same reasons. Simply having characters with accents or speech patterns that exaggerate their respective ethnic group’s traits in a cartoon isn’t inherently racist. Punch-Out for the Wii does the same and that’s not racist. Nothing in Bosco’s character is making a negative statement about black people. He just has a silly voice in the same way Sam, Max, Lincoln, Grandpa Stinky, and others have funny voices. So, to me, it’s more offensive to fire the original actor simply on the basis that it’s not politically correct to have a Jew voice a black person. Especially because the new actor is nowhere near as funny as the old one (not because of stereotypical voices, but because the new performance is just plain worse).
They've since patched out the "RMS DLR" one back to "DRG DLR", as well as added "How's them Bosco Tech breasts holding up" back.

The reason i didnt buy the remake wasnt because stuff was censored (although it would have been the main reason) it was because they went out of their way to promise that NOTHING would be censored from the original but they just lied in front of everybody's faces
It's like someone looked at the format of how jokes are written -- "setup, punchline" --- and decided to replace it with "setup, comedy to be determined later."
New Bosco sounds more like a white guy trying to sound like a black guy than original Bosco ever did.
Looks like people didn't get that the unfiltered crude humour made it special, now it's one more in the sea of "safe-products"
cause those 4 jokes were the only crude humopr in this many hours long game...yet those 4 jokes were the only reason people played this game...
What made Sam & Max special was its clever and unconventional wordplay. "Unfiltered crude humor" isn't at all special, and if you want it so bad look to literally any adult animated show ever made for your fix. In fact, given that this is a game for older teens and adults, making it raunchy would make it more "safe" and blending into products with a similar demographic than as is.

Aren't Sam & Max all about irreverence? You know, living in a world where nothing really matters, where the protagonists are violent for the fun of it, where nothing is sacred, where everything and everyone is casually mocked equally, where a thick blanket of crudeness, sarcasm, cynicism and biting satire coats every moment? So I dunno if Sam & Max is the right franchise for people who get easily offended.
Also, how ironic is it that they didn't want to have an actor doing a "stereotypical impression of an African American" for a character.... but the character itself is still doing stereotypical impressions of british people, french people, and russian people.

They included the original uncensored 2007 version of "Sam & Max Save The World" as free DLC, so it's not a total bummer, but it's really stupid that they censored it with the remastered if they were gonna include the uncensored version anyway. *in Jason Alexander voice: I mean, come on! @@logannottheonefrommarvel9917 Of course not. The original was never made for the Switch (not even the Wii U, PS4 or Xbox One existed back then!), so for the Switch only the new version is available. But just for a few cut lines, of which you can hear them ALL in this video, it's not worth worrying about.
The stupidest thing is that people wouldn't have actually been all that upset with these jokes. They are remarkably tame and in reality most people aren't as sensitive as the loud minority makes it appear. Most people however can get on board the hate train when it concerns issues of censorship and false advertisement. This upset more people then any mild-mannered, background joke alluding to the fact that drug dealers exist would have.

1. They changed the jokes just because they, the AUTHORS and DEVELOPERS of this game, liked them changed and have every right to make THEIR GAME like they want. No one pressured them to do it nor did they do it to appease any crowd.
2. The "RMS DLR" problem was just a bug (it was a license plate from another car) and they fixed it so now it still says "DRG DLR".

HotDiggityDemon made a good point In his essay about Apu from the Simpsons, he mentioned how characters like Mario is an Italian Stereotype voiced by a French man yet he's Italian and loves Mario, he also had a consise point where he said one of the wonderful things about voice work is anyone (for the most part) can become a fictional character who isn't necessarily anything like their IRL form, and that telling someone "you can't voice X because you're Y" is actually extremely racist/sexist.
The industry definitely needs to open up and make space for more minority actors, but a lot of people are taking the wrong approach and are actually being far more insensitive than those they're calling out.
@@_-Lx-_ So first off, Italians in media have had little else but tremendously positive impact and representation, from actors to filmmakers, and most crucially to this puzzle, were not also subjected to hundreds of years of genocidal persecution and slavery, which included refusing to even let people of color play people like them in productions. Even on the rare chance they did get a role, there was a stint of time where they couldn't even go see their own damn movie they starred in because the theater was marked "Whites only". Context matters and pretending it doesn't is what gets you shit like this.
Second, You know where else you can pretend to be born in another part of the world? Your imagination. And you can do that not only without much extensive reading or training because no one is gonna actually be offended by shit you got wrong in your head, but you'll do it without taking roles from people from that background.
And finally, HDD is not a good arbiter on what should or shouldn't be offensive, because he himself has a history of using bigoted caricatures for sheer shock value, then acting as if the negative reception wasn't literally exactly what he wanted because the reactions are what's funny to him rather than the caricatures. He's a grifter who uses his web animation pedigree to maintain a following rather than actually having anything valuable to say, and his end-goal is to have a space where he doesn't have to suffer the social ramifications of being a piece of shit at best, and at worst wants a participation trophy for being a piece of shit.
I prefer the edgy humor of the original 10 times over the utterly castrated jokes the remake has.
Despite the censored jokes and the change on Bosco's voice, the remasters are actually still good.
I seriously wish Skunkape Games can have an option to switch from the censored jokes to the original jokes with the original Bosco voice, since the PC versions added the original Telltale versions of the games with the original jokes.
Seriously, adding an option to switch to the remastered, censored jokes with the new Bosco voice to the original, uncensored jokes with the original Bosco voice will be really interesting.
The new jokes are extremely dull, but the old one's aren't too great either. The skinhead one I don't see why they changed, and the Bosco's mom conversation didn't seem like it was going into anything super offensive. If this is all that was "censored" then I don't see too much of a reason to hate the remaster. The Devs lying about censorship does suck though, if they had told the truth, I don't think these changes would have nearly as much hate as they do.
Agreed. They didn't need to try and trick us. Most if not all people who got it now probably would have still bought it regardless, if with a slight eye roll. The changes truly aren't that massive.

While many of these were intentional rewrites, a few were actually errors in the initial release that have since been fixed. These include:
- DRG DLR license plate being mistakenly replaced
- The Director not pulling out a gun in the credits sequence (not shown in the video, but mentioned in the comments)
- The missing conversation with Bosco in Episode 6
- Sam and Max still calling Bosco "Sissypants", defeating the whole point of Bosco's line change.
They've also re-done some of Bosco's earlier lines in Episode 1 in an attempt to make him sound closer to what people expected, after listening to feedback. At the time of writing this, these changes have all been made to the PC version, and I believe have been sent off to be added to the Switch version.
I also remember on episode 1, when we go to Sybil for the APD dream test, there is no option for 'wanting to marry one's mother" option is gone... that really make me sad.
The APD test is actually randomized each time you play. That particular symptom might not have shown up on your playthough, but should still have a chance to appear.

Wow I just heard about the remaster recently but I had no idea they would rewrite/remove jokes, also like everyone is saying the new Bosco voice actor is terrible compared to the older one.
I understand why they did this, but most of the original jokes seemed really harmless.
I think "Why the Sex Change?" was the only one where I was like "Yeah, that's fair." The SissyPants one I sort of understand too, but everything else was too silly to take serious.
I would have apprieciated a prompt when you begin playing that's like "Some of these jokes have aged poorly. Do you want them removed in your playthrough?" That way, everyone wins.
I think the tear gas one too is probably a bit too much considering recent events (even though I did find it funny). I agree with ya on the Sex-Change one too.

In my opinion, regarding the remaster, they could've just hire someone that sounds like bosco's original voice in the remaster. Like Phil Lamarr for example. Or they could just give the option to switch between bosco's original or remastered voice. Other than that, I've enjoyed the remaster.

At first I could see the complaints but playing through 4 of the episodes, his new voice actor really has grown on me honestly.
Maybe the worst part is the recording sounds a lot more crisp then the older lines (though there is also some inconstancy with the older lines quality, like sometimes Sam has a lot more bass in his voice).
The remasters visual changes are amazing looking (especially with the mood lighting during some of the more dramatic scenes), the 1% of lines changes were not that funny or central to the plot to begin with (and some edits you mentioned were errors that were fixed, not censorship), some scenes got more animation, and everything else.
There is way to much good about these remasters for this to bother me at all.

They've added the original 2006-2007 release as free DLC on Steam and GOG two days ago in case anyone is wondering.
Just finished playing the remastered version today ((over the course of a week)) and based off of this video, they apparently added back the "How's life as a woman?" to Bosco's dialogue tree with all the old dialogue and everything. Besides that, everything else was censored.
Ignoring the censorship for a moment, another problem with Bosco's new voice acting is that the new recorded line for Bosco clash really hard with the old takes for some reason, it's like they don't fit the flow of the original it kinda breaks the comedic timing '(that is, when they try to tell a joke and not just remove the joke that was in there in the first place)

it doesn't even sound like a chris rock impersonation. chris rock's voice has actual character to it. i don't even like chris rock but his voice is very distinct. this new voice sounds like a wet sponge. it has no character, it's just a completely generic voice that not only sounds generic, but the performance is also awful. the original bosco was probably the best part of the whole game. i loved going into his store and seeing what he was up to next and the voice actor made it work.

Honestly I'm just glad we got a remaster in the first place. If you go onto Skunape's website and head to the f.a.q. you'll see that they had to change some of the jokes as they wouldn't slide now. While some may not like what they did to the game, they really are just doing what they can with the series.
Adding to what I said, the jokes that were changed were either insensitive or offensive to audiences who are trans, have special needs, school shooting victims, whatever the heck a skinhead is, and just other groups. The only joke I don't understand them censoring was the drug dealer license plate. As a teen game, it wouldn't really change the rating and would most likely just get a chuckle from somebody seeing it and not a twit longer on why the game should be taken down.

Exactly. The only one that got removed that I even found all that funny was the college student one, but that's cuz I'm a college student so it doesn't feel like a punch down. I think people are just hung up on the idea that jokes age poorly and what people find funny changes with cultural shifts. It isn't censorship, it's reworking a few jokes for a more modern audience.
I do wish they got a better voice actor though. So that's my only real complaint.

I find both to be a problem because when you look at it the developer promised that the jokes would remain untouched... In fact, the only thing that was promised was that timing would get better in the remastered version, but obviously, that was a lie. Sam & Max is supposed to be edgy and offensive, I understand the transgender jokes getting removed, but everything else is not even that offensive, even now, I know times are different, we can't just make fun of everyone like we did in the past, but much of that censorship is stupid and unnecessary even for the standards of today, "Arms dealer bad, drug dealer good" is a new level of stupidity.
When stuff like this gets changed/censored, the fans complaining are worrying too much about small and insignificant stuff, but the people who were worried about this in the first place and demanded for something small and insignificant to be censored are fine.

But they've kept in plenty of other edgy jokes- even the one that you specifically brought up in your comment. Where some see a few lines of dialogue changed as insignificant, others see this as encroaching censorship. Its the dialogue itself that's not in contention but rather the implications behind the change. Why change something that worked well before? Why change these specific jokes? Then again, why keep something in that is offensive to the current market?

I also think the new VA and the relatively small number of jokes cut is ok. Remasters and remakes exist to clean up that type of thing, make it more marketable to modern audiences.

I don’t think this is *all* bad. the “militant college students” one I don’t get so I won’t comment on it, the French one I don’t understand why they changed it, and the goggles one I think both versions of the joke weren’t the best (I personally would’ve gone for “Goggles designed for children with hideously oversized heads”, overly specific jokes are great). The only one I think changed for the better is the mother one, the original almost made me physically cringe. I know Sam and Max is dark, but that one was incredibly yikes.

I was curious and I legit thought it was going to be more. I think some of the jokes that were changed were kind of silly. For example, the "clears out a room of protestors" seems to me to be poking fun at the militarized police force and I was okay with it. Other original jokes I liked less and get the change but it honestly doesn't bother me either way. Like, I don't think there was a big demand to change the jokes and I don't think there would have been a controversy if they hadn't so it's just a personal choice. Anyone going off about SJWs or whatever is being very silly imo.
